Hello the kind and lovely people of steamgifts land!

It is steam summer sale and it is time to find some new game that will be a joy for some time and for a good price ofc
I would like to ask for a specific game...I realy liked Royal bounty HD back in my days and that feeling of nostalgia is making me hungry for a game like this. Can somebody suggest a game close to that? I would very much appreciate if this game will be oldschool as well ;)

And by the way I am also curious...What is your opinion about current steam summer sale?

To be honest I dont like cog at all...Even their charity about "connect your steam account and we will give you all games you had there for free" is not changing my mind.
I just used to steam and I like it far better I guess
But thank you for your suggestion ;)

Just to clear it up, GoG (Good Old Games) uses their own Galaxy app. What differs from GoG and Steam is when you download a game from GoG (DRM-Free) which you own, you Do Not need to keep the app running online unlike Steam. I do not use GoG often, I downloaded and played the 1st Mount and Blade.

Their main order of business is reviving older games to be playable on modern machines. They also have good Quality Checks, all games listed on GoG have to go through a check and the team reviews to allow only quality games and unlike the countless trash games you see on Steam nowadays.

I have a growing library on GoG, thanks to GoG Connect. I will be honest, that is because of my even faster growing Steam library. If Steam is ever down for me and I wanted to play some games, I will fire up galaxy. Its a stable client. Like you, I am used to Steam. However if you never played Heroes of Might and Magic III, get it on GoG. Its the only place that offers the Complete edition. Not even on Ubisoft and the copy on steam which I won on a giveaway was only the base game without the expansions.

Too bad this topic is on Steam sale as the GoG summer sale just ended and HMM III was on sale. If you enjoyed King's Bounty HMM III is a must-play imo.

Yes, the Heroes series or the Disciples series. Honestly, I always liked Disciples 1-2 more than any Heroes games.

I'd suggest GOG for them, usually better compatibility with Win7+ systems.
Also, forget Disciples 3, it is plainly bad.

Disciples 3 is the one game from that series that I tried and I dropped it relatively quickly.

I imagine the first game didn't age well enough to be enjoyable nowadays, but the second one seems okay.

There are two of them though: Disciples II: Gallean's Return (which store claims to be the "base game with two expansions) and Disciples II: Rise of the Elves which isn't really well explained what it is.

They say: "Now that series has expanded further with Disciples II: Rise Of The Elves. This version features all of the campaigns found in the original and a brand new campaign that continues the storyline of the Elven Race."

Does that means Rise of the Elves also contains the campaigns from the previous two expansions making it the ultimate version of the game? Or does it only contains the campaigns from the base game with the added Elves campaign?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It has three editions. Gallean's Return is the base game plus the first two expansions that came out really close to the base game. There is also Gold, which contains all expansions. And there is the Rise of the Elves Gold one, which contains everything plus some new bonus bonus levels.

On GOG, there is no confusion, they have the Gold edition with all expansions packed into one, and that is it. On Steam, I have no idea what those editions mean. it seems they separated the final expansion, because the Elves are a totally new race in it, but the base game there, I have no idea how much it contains. But it is a still cheaper on GOG for the one pack than on Steam for the two. :D

I read up on the Rise of the Elves steam forum and people say that it doesn't include the previous two expansions. That sucks, I wouldn't want to buy Gallean's Return and Rise of the Elves separately as two different games.

GOG did things better with the Gold edition lumping all of them together in one package. But I don't like playing things off-steam so yeah I'll pass on that.

Well, I prefer to play PC games off-Steam, so for me, it was a good deal back then, even though I think I paid around 2,50 Euro-ish for it when I got it on GOG, not the current 1,70 sale price.

Double thumbs up for Disciples and Heroes. I agree Disciples III is bad, from what I read of the reviews as they were bought over if I remember correctly so they were not made by the same devs before. It just ruined the series sadly. Certainly both Disciples II titles on Steam is a buy. Disciples I if you want a bit of the lore imo. Cheers~

And I love it too even with the fact that It made me rage sometimes when I was a child xD

The problem with Heroes of Might & Magic III on Steam is that it isn't the complete version that they have on GOG (I don't have GOG either, so I am missing out as well). The version on GOG has all of the expansions included, while Steam's is just the base game.

Let me know if you liked it. The game has always been free and it was released in 2003 so I assume it has tons of user made content by now since players can create their own campaigns and what not.

I tried it long time ago and it was interesting, but never got to play a lot of it because I kept getting distracted by other games.

...or just get King's Bounty? "Royal Bounty HD is a fantasy RPG in the feel of the great old 1990 King's Bounty."

Depends how old-school you wanna go, you can also get the re-booted King's Bounty game(s). Arguably the best one: https://store.steampowered.com/app/63910/Kings_Bounty_Crossworlds/

Disciples 2 with all expansions. It's quite different from heroes series bur it have very nice graphics for it's age and if You will follow then plot is quite great too! But it can be quite difficult at beggining.
As for the sale, from point when steam don't do flash sales every sale is quite boring, still I'm planning on getting Everspace.

flash sales during summer/winter sale is a pretty good thing
It might take time to monitor all the items/games you want but it is worth it ;)
Yeah I already checked disciples games except the 3rd one cos I was told above that this one is a piece of...garbage

And now we don't have such huge discounts as were during flash sales, shame...

I'm surprised that the Age of Wonders series hasn't been mentioned yet.

You might also want to consider Endless Legend or the Eador series. Though they only have some basic roots in common with your game, they are interesting variations.

AoW III is a good one, I think there is some modification you can do to your unit which was what interest me. However the battle scenes can take very long due to animations and become tiresome. Good game nonetheless. Cheers~

Eisenwald !!! I would recommend Eisenwald too, its more of a Medieval vibe of game rather than the usual Fantasy we see, though it does have Fantasy elements within the game. You yourself play a knight/lord, gameplay mechanics is similar to King's Bounty.

Warning though as far as I know, the game is also very Story driven, you may have to read alot to understand what is going on. The game recently has a new expansion. Its one of my wishlisted game too. Cheers~

Age of Wonders series is amazing! I think you'd enjoy it very much!

I think you'd also enjoy the King's Bounty series. I purchased the entire KB bundle on Steam a while back with a very nice discount. If the sale is good enough, I would pick that series up as well!

You're welcome.:)

If you do decide to get Age of Wonders, you'll definitely want to play Age of Wonders 1 first. It is easier than AoW 2, and it will prepare you for the second game. Plus, I just enjoyed using the 'Dominate' ability to snurch some opposing Heroes!;)

Good titles are being recommended above. I would like to recommend some titles that looks close to what you are looking for, in my wishlist but I am not very clear of their gameplay:

Expeditions: Viking Expeditions: Conquistador - Looks similar to Eisenweld's gameplay you hire individuals rather than a large group.
Overfall - Cartoonish but seems like fun
Warbanners - Hire and through your men into the mix, what is not fun about it! hahaha~
Valkyria Chronicles™ - Anime, I have the game, yet to play. Heard great things about it as its part of a running series on Play Station. Its also a TV anime. I believe you command a squad and at times you can turn to 1st person view.

Have fun hunting, Cheers~
