I just looked at pictures on Google images and Pinterest until the idea popped in my head. It's not my first cake so I've been experimenting before with various ideas.
I baked the bottom part of the cake in a large glass bowl, the top part in a regular 8" pan. I put the bottom part upside down on top of the 2nd one and removed the excess cake to have a continuous shape. I then "glued" the 2 part together with frosting. I then put the cake back upright in a dinner plate and frosted the sides.
I then made a strip of fondant long enough to go around the whole cake and a bit larger than the height of the cake. Once I wrapped it around, I folded the top part upon itself to the fondant is ticker at the top and keep it's shape. (It also look more rounded and natural). I made the handle out of fondant and used toothpick to hold it in place. I also put so crumpled foil in the hole to prevent it from losing it's shape until it dried a bit.
I added brown gel food coloring to my icing and a few spoons of black coffee until I got the right color and a creamy texture. I juts poured the icing "in the cup" and smoothed it with the back of a spoon by doing circular motions until it was spread evenly. I stuck a butter knife in it to look like a spoon's handle.
For the biscuits, I made Scottish shortbreads and used a rectangular container as a cookie cutter to get the right size. I just made the indentations around it with my fingers and used the handle of a small paintbrush to add rows of small holes on top of them.

Pretty much. Some trial and errors on past cakes, my mom for some baking tips and the Internet for everything else.

It's a butter knife that I stuck in there. I tried to make a spoon out of fondant but I couldn't get the color right. (It looked a lot more like something that would come out the back of my dog than silverware.) Since I'm not well-equipped I do not have edible metallic paint or black coloring gel to at least get some grey color.

IDK about Canada, but here in CA you can find different food coloring (gel and liquid), fondant in different color (and yes, black one too), and even decorative edible paper for cakes or other baked goods - in celebrations section in Walmart and in craft store... what the!.. brain freeze... I remember that one is a big chain, and starts with P... Michaels! Omg, brainfreeze was worth than I thought. Petco located right next door to it in our shop center, but still... Anyway - some Walmarts are even open 24/7 if you need something at the last moment.
I like to cook though I'm not really good at baking myself, but that cake looks amazing and really tasty. You are such a wonderful dad!
Happy early Birthday - and as someone told me long time ago: You are only as old as your youngest kid. So... so far you are only 12! ;D

I live in a small town so our local Walmart has next to nothing in that area. I would have to go to a specialty shop to equip myself better. So far I've always been able to make due with that I can find at the grocery store but it would be a good idea for me to equip myself better. (I would also need to plan ahead too, I figured out what I was going to do as a cake 2 days before we celebrated her birthday.)

oops... Sorry. Drawback of living in a big city (and in a well-developed part of the world with that) - you kinda forget that what you take for granted is not so for others out there... (facepalm)
But I have to admit - you imagination and resourcefulness makes up for that several times over! \o/

So, I'm turning 41 this Friday and I'm starting to feel a tiny bit old. Soon I will be setting up a rocking chair on the front porch, buying a cane and screaming "geroff my lawn" at kids.
Of course, the fact that a third child of mine made it's way into adulthood last week (I even made her this lovely cake) is a good reminder that I'm not getting any younger. That, and the fact that I'm getting a grandson this august.
So, in order to forget about me turning into an old fart, I will just do what all the cool kids are doing these days: a giveaway train!
