Sadly, that saying was taught to me originally by an inmate on death row at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. He was one of the very few people I have met in my life that I consider to be "evil" after nearly fifteen years as a prison guard.
He was right as was Nietzsche. You spend too much time in a place like that and you do not leave the same as when you came in to it regardless of your intention.
