Anyone ever play Battlezone II?
It's not a pure strat game, it's a strat/fps cross.
It's a great game, but between launch issues, other RTS's that launched around the same time, and a lot of the BZ1 fanbase crapping on the game it never really caught widespread attention.
Despite it not doing to well commercially, it quickly became a cult classic (I guess this would be the right term?) that ended up with a crapload of mods and a couple of the original developers releasing unofficial patches for the past decade and a half.
The first game was eventually revived as Battlezone 98 Redux, though afaik II isn't going to be revived anytime soon.

Strategy is large scale resource command, while tactics is small scale command. As far as games, that's the difference between commanding cities and nations, against taking control over a specific squad of combatants. Think of strategy as the overall preparatory, long-term plans of a faction, and tactics as the smaller [typically battle-responsive] plans designed to allow that overall strategy to complete successfully. [>>]
Thus, as far as games go, games like Pillars of Eternity would fall under tactical representation, rather than strategic. (Though, games like PoE don't actually meet the expectations of the TRPG Genre [>>], as the difference between a TRPG and a CRPG tends to not only refer to the inclusion of party dynamics, but also of an emphasis on combat [over exploration]. As exploration and questing is part of PoE, it wouldn't normally be associated with the TRPG genre.)
Further, it's worth noting that SRPGs (Strategy RPGs) do exist- they're an extremely niche genre, but they have some offerings. (More casually, the X-Com games and similar games are at times also considered as part of the genre, as they compliment their TRPG combat with strategic gameplay components [eg, base-building, tech research, etc].) As a final note, SRPG (Simulation RPG) is Japan's term for TRPG, which has caused a lot of westerners to confuse the two western terms of TRPG and SRPG as also being synonymous.

Thanks for the train ride. (As for the question, probably Age of Empires.)

My favourite strategy game of all times is definitely Age of Empires II (the original), one of my first games on PC... an awful lot of years ago. Am I really this old?
Not even Civilization V managed to hook me as hard - yes, I know that one is real-time while the other is turn-based, but they're both strategy games at the core.
I remember having many sleepless nights during weekends and holidays in my middle school years, I must have clocked a few thousands hours or so.
I used to start playing shortly after dinner, then: 11pm: just another skirmish - 2am: okay, this is really the last one - 5am: oh, it's morning already?
I was kinda relieved to see it getting an HD remaster on Steam, since I had long lost my old CD - I can even officially play as the Italians now (actual Italians, not the Roman Empire) thanks to the Forgotten DLC (based on an old mod).
Shameless self-advertisement of my review for the HD version (one of my best reviews overall).

That would be Warcraft 3 and Red Alert 2, despite them being different from each other I can't really decide which I like more. And congrats on Act of Aggression, that's the one I would to try one day, the act of war was pretty good (But IMO C&C Generals was better :P)

X-COM: UFO Defense and C&C: Red Alert were what got me into strategy games back in the day, X-CoM for it's creepy atmosphere and C&C because it was multiplayer (by calling my uncles computer and listening to the screams of initial connectivity...oh s**t am I old already?)
Plus the original Fallout. The Master still haunts my dreams!

FF Tactics by far, I have a PSP still just for that game and can't help but love it. Tactics Ogre is along with it as well though.
