There's no explanation, people just want to do them and prefer putting them on the forums instead of the public section - because they want their gifts to go to users who actually contribute the activity on the site, not those who only roam the giveaways.

Well, if you "just do them", it wouldn't be a train since you can access the giveaways separately if you make it publicly. It's gotta be "invite only" at some point for the whole train idea to work.
I think users just make trains for the people in the forum, to give them something back for being more active in the forum.
At least that's my explanation.

You seem a kid or an IA learning :) [don't be offended, internet language is too cold to get]
They must be private so you can only enter a giveaway from the previous one, and if you want to arrive to the tail you must cross the entire train.
There are also labyrinths, mazes, rabbit holes,... all them under similar logics and reasons.

To me it's all about effort. I like putting some effort in a train to make something special of it. A theme, nice descriptions, maybe even a storyline, some hidden compartments. That kinda stuff. Knowing it will put a smile on the faces of the people stepping onto my train makes giving away games so much more fun. Not only the winner will have a good time, but everbody! In return I ask for some effort for people to join: be a forum participant.
Effort increases value.

I like the "activity contribution" theory, but I think they do that just because they like trains.

A train is also easier to click through than a list of GA's so you don't have to keep going back to the thread post.

Hey, i was a long time inactive but i like the steamgifts thing and i am back.
What i've seen when i was exploring the forum are trains? What are these trains about?
Sure, one giveaway after another of a user. But why do you do something like this and advertise them in the forum? You could just do them?
Is there a explaining thread anywhere? I Havnt found one.
Some Explanations about trains would be nice, i want to understand this community thing.
Why, Where and other Questions i could have you are able to answer :)
