I like all 3 games and hope they all continue to grow. I have only played KOTK so far, but have been looking forward to PUBG for a long time and now am excited for Fortnite because it looks like a great game from the gameplay videos I have seen. Competition is what drives innovation and makes things better for the consumer.

Honestly I wish all these survival games would go away or die down a little bit. Not my type of game and there are so many of them these days they have become what zombie games were in the late 2000s/early 2010s, over saturated.

"Carbon copy" and "further action"... seems to me that their greed is beyond limits and also they didn't expect this move at all. PUBG is an overrated & overpriced early access game that gave too much to a particular studio. Now with the money in hand they think they own this type of game and they threat with legal action. It is true that there are certain similarities , but a "carbon copy" is to exaggerate. I'm glad they have a free rival on both consoles and PC. And for what I've heard, Fortnite plays smooth as butter.

They can't monopolize "battle royale", It would be a huge mistake from a jury.

It's not about it being a battle royale game, it's about Epic Games (their business partner -since PUBG is Unreal Engine) making their own version and advertising it with PUBG to which Bluehole never agreed upon (plus the possibility Epic could purposefully retain things from PUBG just because it's their competitor). I'd advise you to read this.

As I read it they let it seem like Bluehole is totally on board with their battle royale game and that it could be misleading to some people to think Fortnite Battle Royale would be some sort of cooperation between Bluehole and Epic Games.
Plus the thing that Epic could just not release certain parts for their engine for the public because they use them for their own Battle Royale game (at least that's what the article states - if I read it correctly).

Probably they'll first contact Epic Games on monday I'd presume before making any other press release or interview about it since (some) people are already up in arms that Bluehole was "complaning" about Fortnite BR - probably the initial cause for this interview in the first place to clear things a bit up.

Well let's see where all this leads in the end ^^

I read the article and in my opinion BlueHole just keep messing up with bad PR and giving free publicity to Fortnite. It´s obvious that they´re mad because Fortnite is a free game and big Twitch streamers have played It already, leaving PUBG aside for a moment. This is all about money and fame. PUGB has been a huge success also because of all the Twitch hype. I´m not saying the game is bad, but they´re just letting you know that they don´t want any competition. They could have said something like "Bluehole is committed to their player base and will keep working on the game, reaching unexpected levels on the Battle Royale genre, we will discuss this matter the right way", but instead they choose a bad stance trying to look like the fathers of BR. You can check on Steam that people already gave PUBG negative reviews because of this and even players don´t agree with this stance.

Worst thing is that they´re now claiming that Epic could develop new features or improve something in the engine to support their battle royale gameplay instead of PUBG. This doesnt help at all. They´re just making the situation even worse, creating friction with their partner and trying to demonize them.

Checked some comments on the article you linked and found this, (didn´t go through the whole document):

"You don't need to have permission to use another game in comparative advertisement. They may not like it but it's the law:

https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/advertising-faqs-guide-small-business

Is it legal for a company to compare its product to another company's product in an ad?
Answer: Comparative advertising is legal as long as it is truthful. For more information, ask the FTC for the Comparative Advertising Policy Statement".

It will be interesting to see where this ends.

I'm not trying to defend Bluehole but I can understand them a little bit and their "fear" this could go badly. When your business partner develops the "same" or at least "a very similar" product there is bound to be some trouble sooner or later. They chose poorly in my opinion by not getting into contact with Epic Games first about this before anything else but hey, we'll see what happens.

Bluehole, shouldnt fear at all, they had success from day 1 despite issues, that says something. Twitch gave them a huge boost in sales after the H1Z1 hype. We could say PUGB is an improved version of H1Z1. People have been really generous with them since the game is not really optimized at all and I think they also lied about the "No Microtransactions" deal as every developer does. Heck! not even Tripwire Interactive had those prices for their latest title Rising Storm 2 Vietnam and they also have been on the public eye just for adding some cosmetics on Killing Floor 2.

I´m not trying to defend Epic games either, I just find interesting how this matter escalate in just 1 week.

To me, it just sounds like Bluehole (or Chang Han Kim, in this case) is just getting full of themselves. While it's a minor detail compared to the overall argument, I found this bit funny.

"Bluehole, Inc., developers of PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS (PUBG), the first standalone Battle Royale survival shooter game..."

I mean, come on. I can definitely think of several other games that did the "Battle Royale survival shooter" thing before they did. H1Z1? I can see them getting around that with "standalone" since H1Z1 wasn't divided into two games, but even then you have other games like The Culling which have always been standalone (even if not very successful anymore).

Yeah same, there's also some shittier games like that on Steam that no one plays (because they're garbage) but predate Battlegrounds by a good amount. One such example would be "Down To One", absolutely terrible game that no one plays anymore but it came out January 2016. I like Battlegrounds and will continue playing it, but their statement sure rubbed me wrong too.

I really do hope this trend of these horrible survival games will die out soon.

I'm still confused as to how exactly is BR genre so different from FFA in Quake III, except for a much larger map that shrinks over time.

http://www.pcgamer.com/pubg-exec-clarifies-objection-to-fortnite-battle-royale-its-not-about-the-idea-itself-its-about-epic-games/

They don't care about if anyone makes a Battle Royale Mode, when it is except Epic Games which provides them technical support and license their game engine, and to whom they probably disclose most of their code sources.
Especially when the Epic Game mod is a pure (cartoon) clone of PUGB experience. They could have added their own flavour o_o

I have tested Fortnite Battle Royale mod, I was expecting to discover Fortnite core game mechanics, but no, apart you can salvage everything (rock, walls and doors...)

Simply : now they fear any innovating addition to PUBG they might talk about with Epic Games could be leaked and released in Fortnite clone before they do.
Also, they feel they got exploited by Epic Games to promote their own game by being associated without any prior information...

But Polygon article posted above is right in their conclusion : PUBG staff should just try to leave Fortnite behind them and stay focused on their game.

We could say the same thing about PUBG compared to H1Z1 King of the Kill. Doesn´t matter if Brendan Green aka "PlayerUnknown" worked as a H1Z1 dev having that concept already. It was Daybreak who commercialized Green´s idea first, but you don´t see this game studio whining about how Bluehole took "their" concept. I agree, Brendan Green brought this to life as a mod in Arma 2 & 3. That doesn´t mean they can monopolize a genre.

Honestly, I don´t feel like PUBG and Fortnite are the same thing. They´re not even focused on the same audience. The last one is free and It will attract a younger audience. PUBG is focused on a more mature audience (High End PC Gamers only atm).
