Ubisoft has announced a sweeping company restructure that will result in the cancelation of six games including its Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, and a delay to a further seven titles. Two Ubisoft studios will be closed completely as a result of the changes, while others are subject to further layoffs.

Of the half dozen games that have been fully scrapped, Ubisoft is only publicly naming one today — its long-awaited Sands of Time remake that was rebooted once already. Three of the canceled games were new IPs, while one was a mobile game. Ubisoft's core focus going forward, the company has said, will be on open-world games and live-services.

No specific detail has been given of the seven titles that Ubisoft has delayed, either, though this number does include the unannounced game once set for launch before March 31 that is widely expected to be the company's Assassin's Creed: Black Flag remaster. This will now launch in the coming financial year — so before March 31, 2027.

I mean sorry what the actual fuck is this

I mean, looking at how Ubisoft went this last decade, even if this sounds bad it is more likely a good thing or attempt at least to try and clean up their mess and start over again, otherwise the path will only be downwards.

It was supposed to release in 2024

If they canceled it now, that means that there wasn't anything fully playable yet What the hell were they doing? Nobody was checking they were working?

They haven't released a single huge hit since Valhalla

considering how they've been treating Rainbow Six: Siege for the past 6 years, it doesn't surprise me. Siege is literally carrying their finances and only now, since the year 2026 started, we're finally seeing some things going for the better and them putting a little bit more of effort (but still very VERY far from what it used to be back in 2018-2019). I hope this is the year they wake up.

Basically they are "refocusing" on something that's literally been their failing strategy for the past 5 years.
Well done.

It's the Guillemot family trying to save their studio from the ravenous claws of the Chinese "silent partner" they stupidly let into their house a couple of years ago.
And by "trying to save" I mean failing ofc since their "strategy" is to "refocus" on things that have been failing for years so the general translation is "Message to shareholders: we still haven't figured out how to make money off games anymore so in the meantime we're going to cut spendings by firing people and... not making games I guess?"

I have no idea what they mean by "open world games" though. If they mean crap not-really-multiplayer multiplayer games like Skull & Bugs, they can keep them.

Hm, maybe I'll finally catch up with my Assassin's Creed backlog before they make more, at this rate.

Live services though? Ew.

You definitely should before the whole studio finally ceases to exist and most games stop being playable because the single campaign still relies on their damn servers and multiplayer stuff nobody cares about.

Live services though? Ew.

lol good luck to them. How many times can a company try the same failing strategy over the course of the same decade hoping it will work this time?
I remember when my sister was working for a company that was working with Ubisoft and they were putting it all in with their "new" subscription service... but they had no idea how they were going to monetize it or make money off it really. That's so Ubisoft.

i mean from what i saw from the remake they completely overhauled the visual style so it didnt even look like the same game, but at least we have the old game with community mods to make it look good

Well, that's what happens when you hire diversity instead of talent.
And continue to force your garbage ubisoft connect even when buying a game on steam

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still not dead somehow and the original trailer was released in 2008. The sequel is old enough to attend a university.

Yet another corpo decision which only makes sense on paper "less employees, more live services, mooooore moneeeeeey" - how the CEO probably sounds like in their management meetings.

I am split on these restructures though. I agree that the AAA dev companies really need to get their shit together. Same as big IT corpos in general - they certainly dont need 100 devs on one feature... or 100 analysts ... or 100 marketing gurus ... our of which everyone earns twice the average salary but can physically do 3 full time jobs doing it.

But I just cant get my head around how incompetent they are at doing these restructures. How I see it - they probably hire outside consulting company for shitloads of money, they simulate some bullshit statistics that management wants to see and then they simply cut off bunch of departments without rerally taking a look at the big picture. This is whats happening in my company right now - we have 4 lawyers, but when I need one, none of those shitheads can help with anything. Now we have outside consulting company to do audit on us, making every employee feel like they are committing a crime, hiding behind "we are just trying to increase efficiency and optimise workflows" while they mean "we are trying to find anyone who to fire", so everyone just fakes their results and adjusts them so it looks as needed for audit. They will eventually cut budget anyway and fire some random people irregardless of their usefullness.

Anyway, its not like Ubisoft surprises anyone with this. Its in their style.
