Since it is January, I thought of creating a thread for those that could have an interest in the Veganuary.
I know I am late to this.

During this month, you commit to make changes in the way you eat in order to reduce animal consumption. It is not as difficult as it seems, and it is an assured way to help the environment, the animals and yourself with better health.
The goal is for people to make an effort, and possibly team up with others doing the same for the first time.
Many people stay with their changes, which is a positive for the world :)

All the info can be found here on the veganuary website. They have done an ad for the first time.

Here’s the giveaway you were looking for.

I created a steam group. If you like the environment, animals, etc. Please don’t feel obligated to join.

The reason superheroes exist in the first place is due to inequality. For some to have freedom, others will inevitably suffer.

You want to break free from the regime? As James Brown wrote in power to the people, without the collective you are never really breaking it. Until we resolve the current economic system, which I blame capitalism, oppression will always exist I am afraid. Power brings greediness and corruption. This way you are actually joining the fat politicians. You cannot escape the establishment, specially if you become part of it.

The true freedom you mention is nothing more than a class division. Yes, you can have some freedom, but always at a cost to others. There is no system we know of (can only speculate), where everybody has the power to be free as you mention.
We fight for social rights, but forget that it is the economy that ultimately rules.

They don't really exist actually, which is why our lives are so dreadfully boring.
But anyway, what does that have to do with me?
In case you think i wish to play the hero, you're wrong.

I didn’t think that. That’s just the reason they were created :’)
Same way that without evil there is no good.

Perhaps, true freedom is non-existence after all.
However this is how creation seem to be working. The more power you have, the more freedom you have.

What does the lack of power mean to you right now?
Money gives you more freedom, power alone might not. The government is controlled by the biggest corporations. If you join the government for power, you are not free, and if you join the most powerful you are as corrupt as the fat politicians.
'Creation' is a fiction developed by men. The history continues, as long as rules are allowed to be created by those in power. Thus true freedom is a concept (worth fighting for nonetheless).

You can be powerful and have many below you in terms of power.
But you don't have to be a powerful asshole and bully everyone below you simply because you can.
The assumption that you will most definitely do so if you get power is a stereotype.

The cost doesn’t have to be social. The simple fact that there's division, there's a cost. If everybody had the same power, there would be no power at all to be gained.
People work for money, hence you need it in order to have power. At least in the current society.
Still you have the power of voice, and history tells us that raising the voice is probably the most powerful thing. When people follow you because they believe in the things you believe, they are not servants, thus the power comes from the unity. Without the group, there is no power.

Let's take current Democracy as an example.
Do you think the Democracy we have is the real deal?

No. I don’t think democracy is right with its current definition.

I think it's no different than having a king to rule over us, only in the past we couldn't select our king and now we can.
Provided the voting was not sabotaged heh.

Yep.

So what to do? Fairly simple answer actually: Direct Democracy.
Humanity could easily create the means by which citizens of an entire country could vote on each and every decision the country makes.

It starts with the voting system being intentionally flawed: dubious transparency, binary voting, and the people that can change its rules, are the people that are in the power already. It is not in their interest to change it. Not to mention political campaigns before the grand voting is nothing but a farce. The more people think they are in control, the better for them.
I would like to see complete transparency as well as voting rules being controlled by the population. The binary choice allows for easily propaganda to put the minds of the people on their side. Something like condorcet would be a much fairer system.

Why have kings at all? Many heads thinking about a problem is superior to one crowned head by far, no?

Oh yeah. At least people have the choice on who to put in power, as opposed to monarchy.

But lookey here, nobody does that. I suppose our kings like being kings, or.. maybe it's the people?
Maybe people like having kings?
After all they can always throw a rotten tomato at a king when something in their life goes wrong, and who cares if the king was the one at fault or not.
Maybe we like blaming each other too much for our own faults?

Absolutely! There’s a need to have someone in which to look for, but also to blame when things go wrong. That’s likely to be a human trait.

Money is false power.

Agree. Money is a virtual 'thing'. It is despicable that's worth more than life itself.
I meant it as a way of survival (hence why I said more, and not total freedom).

Hardly matter to me whether it is the same or not.
Or if everyone gets power in the first place. As long as i do all is well.

Everyone should have it, but it could be problematic, if we find out villains in disguise :P
I kind of wonder what would be your plans if that happened.

Please... more like people slave away so that they can survive another day of slaving away.
Utterly pointless.
The slave master? Bills. Now then, who are the masters of the master?

True. Doesn’t mean we can ignore the money unfortunately 😕
The masters of the masters are not impossible to find, but they are 99% untouchable.

I'd prefer something more tangible, something that can make an army or a couple of armies disappear for example.
But at the same time something that would also let me avoid affecting the environment and the infrastructure as well.
Mass teleportation would work nice, i'd teleport all that annoys me into space or to the bottom of the ocean and move on with my business. Perfect.

Oh man! If we had that, I wouldn't think twice on pressing the button, except I would think at a global scale 😄

I care very little about having followers, that's what kings care about.

In essence that's the role of the presidents. They have the followers, but the decisions are decided up the chain.

Wrong. Group power is just one path to power.
Here is a small piece of "My Ponderings.txt" where i mull things over on occasion:
.36. The great paths.

The path of all-for-one. You borrow power from all to empower yourself. But borrowed power is never your own.
The path of one-for-all. You give your power to all. But doing so weakens you.

One could say, when all have it, no one has it.

The path of one-for-one. You walk the path for yourself, not needing to share nor borrow. But you are alone.

Isn’t this the present situation, where you are still searching for power?

I didn’t fear anything, I specifically meant curiosity.
In order to help others, one must consider oneself. I focus on helping those who need it most, the powerless and the voiceless.
War brings no good, since you mention army. Besides I wouldn’t call teleportation mass-murder. Sometimes it requires desperate measures to help those who haven’t looked at the world yet. Doesn’t mean they must be killed.

You certainly do NOT have to be vegan or care for the animals to understand that you must eat healthy. And, by healthy, I mean a balanced diet, not just vegan food. Eat healthier, live better. Do you really want to look like this in a young age? ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUmp67YDlHY

You are talking about two different things. If you absolutely care about animals, you wouldn't have them killed or suffering daily (dairy), thus vegan is the best option.
There are plenty of studies that show plant-based lifestyle is the most healthy. I am yet to see anyone healthy that doesn't incorporate a lot of vegetables/grains in their plates.

Comment has been collapsed.

Since I had studied food science, I know the importance of a balanced diet. Then again, I'm not in the mood for discussions about the best diet. What I wanted to say with my previous comment, is that even if someone doesn't care about the animals or isn't vegan, it's still not an excuse for them to eat unhealthy and they should certainly try eating healthy in order to avoid eventually becoming sick.
Other than that, I personally eat lean meat, a lot of vegetables, and a lot of fruits.

The great thing at "american" Hot Dogs is that they are GERMAN.

The GI's and immigrants brought it after the war to the USA and renamed it to Hot Dog because a, Bratwurst/Nürnberger/Wurst mit Brötchen/Wurst mit Weckchen and similar names, would pointed out that it is food from the evil enemies.

I used to hate vegetables too, but now I can’t go without them. The taste is wonderful really!

Because your body is so used to meat and fish for years, everything else might not taste as well. Specially for those who consume too much sugar/fast food. For some, vegetables can give be difficult to digest, and this is due to all the fiber content. With time your body adapts, because it's good for you. I believe this happens with everyone that isn't born vegan/vegetarian.
The objective of veganuary is not to turn you into an instant vegan, but to make changes towards that. Feel free to do it at your own pace. Introduce them slowly, and you will notice the difference :)

Why the focus on vegetables? Wouldn't eating more fruit while cutting down on meats environmentally serve the same purpose? Or do vegetables provide nutrients that you can't get (as easy) from fruit?

Also I know it's a big tabu for many people but insects are animals yet they are as far as I know one of the most sustainable ways to create protein for human consumption.

Edit:

I believe this happens with everyone that isn't born vegan/vegetarian.

I suppose that's true because who is born vegan usually tends to die pretty quickly unless the authorities find out fast enough and take away the child from the parents. You're not supposed to try and feed an infant exlusively vegan diet, it's really bad for their health.

The context was the vegetables, but the same applies to fruit/grains/etc.

Also I know it's a big tabu for many people but insects are animals yet they are as far as I know one of the most sustainable ways to create protein for human consumption.

Don't think so. Sustainable perhaps, but everything else fails. Insects also need the plants. For your information, protein is only created by plants. All animals get protein from them. What's the point in eating recycled protein?

I suppose that's true because who is born vegan usually tends to die pretty quickly unless the authorities find out fast enough and take away the child from the parents. You're not supposed to try and feed an infant exlusively vegan diet, it's really bad for their health.

Well Greta Thunberg, and the whole Joaquin Phoenix family has something to say about that.
The problem is centuries of mind blowing propaganda since the industrialisation started. The nutrients you get from non-plant foods are contaminated with hormones, bacterias, vitamins, etc. In fish, chemicals, etc. I wouldn't call that exactly healthy, specially when it leads to serious problems mid-life.
What you see is parents who are not doing their research to make sure a child is well nurtured. Blame the system, who makes it difficult not to participate in killing animals, not the plants.

It doesn't seem to be affecting her much even if the diagnosis is legit.

Indeed, she seems to be doing a lot better now since the whole thing has been going. Here's a quote from her Instagram how living with Aspberger's has affected her life.

I'm not public about my diagnosis to "hide" behind it, but because I know many ignorant people still see it as an "illness", or something negative. And believe me, my diagnosis has limited me before. Before I started school striking I had no energy, no friends and I didn’t speak to anyone. I just sat alone at home, with an eating disorder.
All of that is gone now, since I have found a meaning, in a world that sometimes seems meaningless to so many people.

For an eight year old kid to understand the impact of climate change and go out of her way to fight it, that's uncommon, if not rare. It is extraordinary to have a new generation of minds like that.
Difference is not a motive to mock someone, specially when doing the right thing, even if sometimes it may seem that her ways are too aggressive.

As she very well said: “When haters go after your looks and differences, it means they have nowhere left to go. And then you know you’re winning!”
