Borderlands developers, Gearbox, have given a fan that recently passed away, immortality within the Borderlands, i really think this is worth a read and listen.

One of the reasons Gearbox will forever be one of my favorite devs. Not only do they create great games, but they show that they really do care about their fans time and time again.

Too bad they got saddled with cleaning up and releasing the steaming pile that ended up being Duke Nukem Forever. They don't deserve that kind of mark on their record.

Don't worry, people will eventually forget about DNF (or at least not relate it to Gearbox).

I love Gearbox as a company because of how well they have managed to show just how devoted they are to their fans. There's this current situation, the proposal that Deathykins mentioned, and of course the things they do in order to improve the games themselves (like the Borderlands update that let them gather data to help them improve Borderlands 2). The fact that they also make great games is really just a bonus.

I don't get it. Why did they do that? What's the point? Why is everyone praising them for doing it?

It is a very kind gesture and shows that they do not ignore their fans. In the past, they even did a video with Claptrap a man requested, using Claptrap to propose to his wife. They're just a great company that listens to and cares about their fans.

Imagine this: Your best friend or favorite family member passes away and then (without asking for anything in return) their favorite band writes a song honoring them. That person is now more famous than virtually any other normal person. The same goes here. Gearbox does these things for the fans because they ask and not because they are being paid to do it. They are taking their own time and devoting it to letting this one person live on forever through their game.

That's why I don't get. Why honor him if he did literally nothing but die?

The same reason some celebrities go to visit people on their death bed - They appreciate their fans. They're simply caring people, and regardless of if a person did anything life changing during their time on this earth, everyone has the right and the desire to be remembered.

I guess it all comes down to me not understanding why honor someone at all regardless if he did anything life changing or not. He's dead.

Well, you can take the cynical approach and say that it's amazing publicity for them and will increase sales of their game. Or you could take another slightly less cynical view that they felt obligated to honor someone's "last request." Or, you could take the real approach and see that they are a game company with that rare trait of actually caring about their fans.

Most companies these days take the approach that it doesn't matter how much the consumers like them, they'll keep buying their games (I'm looking at you EA). Gearbox however, goes above and beyond by not only making great games but also showing just how much their fans mean to them.

Asking why they would do this is like asking why a person would ever actually give a game away on this site.

Right now I'm not taking an approach. I just don't understand it. I feel like I found an undiscovered before tribe in New Zealand every member of which eats dirt when someone dies (sorry for the weird comparison, couldn't think of anything else). I'm confused.

"Asking why they would do this is like asking why a person would ever actually give a game away on this site."
-Because he wants to(probably without knowing it) increase his ego (That "warm feeling inside" is it growing).
-Because ---

. . .

Actually, no, it's not like that. It's like giving away a game to someone who's dead.

+1

I remember Bohemia Interactive did pretty much the same thing a couple of years ago. They have named one of the FOBs (Forward Operating Base) in Arma2: Operation Arrowhead in memory of community member.
