I suspect he's referring to games where you get to pilot your ship and land it?
One of my biggest issues with Mass Effect was that, for a game set in space, I never felt its vastness. Space travel was just a cutscene, land was mostly restricted by walls.
The only parts where I really felt in space was exploring with the Mako on the first one, but they went and scraped that :/

Totally different game, but same thing with SWTOR... When I learned you got a ship, I was so excited, but was subsequently bummed when it was all nonfunctional.

I found the expansion lacking, a bit. It takes away the exploration from what I played and instead you're just choosing what adventure you're going on and it takes you there.
Not to bitch and moan about how Spore let me down in some ways. I mean, I was just playing it a few days ago because I still love it.

Oh how I wish they would release this on steam or gog. I LOVED that game.

In the meantime Limit Theory is supposed to be its spiritual successor but right now it's vapor and one can't be sure it will happen. I've been waiting for it since 2012.

Captain Blood/Commander Blood/Big Bug Bang.
Like most (if not all) of the French games that I've played over the years the games in this series are very strange and absolutely gorgeous to look at and listen to. The video is from the second, which also features one of my all-time favourite game soundtracks.

There are also the second and third games in the Mercenary series on the ST and Amiga.

Those games blew my tiny mind when I played them on the Amiga 500. First-person 3D with an entire star system to explore. On the site that I linked above you can find the freeware MDDclone which has all three games available translated into multiple languages for Windows and thr more recent SDL version which has the first game with improved graphics for Windows, OSX and Linux.
The games are obviously very dated today but if you don't mind that I can't recommend them enough as IMO they are genuine works of true gaming genius that I still count among the greatest games I have ever played in my life.
