I have an app that blacklists private calls and its set not to show notifications.
It was mostly so i didn't have to suffer because of annoying marketing calls, but today i noticed the call and after checking the damn log, it appears ive been getting around 15 of those a day since 29/October
So i tried answering one, and...absolute silence.
Idk if its supposed to be a some sort of joke or what, its not like i ever answered any of them until now, so...whats the point.
Im sure i cant check the number, cuz its probably more so illegal than doing the calls, and its not really serious for me to bother going to the police, actually not even them would care much about it

Not being able to tell who is calling is starting to bother me

Its automatic machine that hangs you in silence for a while before theres someone free from marketing center. My guess its their way to cut costs...

If it's marketing calls, then chances are that they're calling more people than they have operators for, so if someone answers, and there are no available operators, it will just be quiet.

If you've only answered one, you might just have been (un)lucky with it, if you've answered several, then yes, there might be something else going on.

Do you still have phones booths, what do you do if you need to make or expect an urgent Call

Most have disappeared, and i guess i could always ask someone on the street if it's really urgent, but yeah if noone is around it can be an issue. I will probably get one eventually, i still have a very very old nokia but no sim.

Sounds like a phishing scam. People will use autodialers to find phone numbers in service, then proceed to bombard them with texts and phone calls offering things like free gifts and trips.

Auto dialers make sense, but there's no message, just silence and then it hangs up

They're robodialers designed with the purpose to just call as many numbers as possible. All you need to do is answer the phone, or let it go to voicemail, and it knows that your number is in service. Then, your number is added to a list and it is sold to other people who don't do business the way they should.

The same thing happened with house phones before caller ID was invented and after, the No Call List setup by Congress has cut down on a lot of it in the US but it's still rampant and a lot of it comes from places outside of the country.

It's basically just a computer looking for some kind of answer on the other line - if it gets the automated number not in service it moves on, if it gets a hit it adds to you to a list to sell to spammers.

Ben Carson's campaign is making HEAVY use of auto-dialers.

Either A)You put your phone number on a survey/phishing site
Or B)Auto-dialers

If anything i'd just ignore because it doesn't break any laws yet

And for the silence its just a joke (unlikely) or there's not enough operators
