Wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or can shed some light on this anomaly.
I've had Borderlands GOTY on my account for a while and while going through some old keys I found another copy. When trying to check the region of something I already have, I usually try redeeming it on my own account to see what Steam says. I tried this with the Borderlands key but I somehow managed to redeem the key. Both Borderlands GOTY and Borderlands GOTY Enhanced have been on my account for a while so I'm not entirely sure what I managed to redeem. I haven't seen anything online regarding this so I'm not sure if it's a bug or not. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance.

I got this as well with Warhammer: Vermintide 2 - have the free copy that was given away on Steam a year ago, and then a retail one - was instead expecting the retail one to say it was a duplicate. No change in Steam Library, no DLC added etc. Steam Support doesn't seem to have any category to remedy this, and in the licences section, it can't be removed, so key's basically used up for nothing unfortunately...

in your case it upgraded from the free license to retail.
so you gained the ability to earn trading cards and I believe +1 to library count for the badge.

hard to say if OP had the same

Not a bug, some publishers love to bundle ""non-existent" new content to their old games. That way they technically activate different content than the old keys activated, and people can activate already owned content's keys without gaining anything. If you check back older Paradox bundles, there is usually such a warning in the OP, that you can activate the keys even if you own the content already. Likely a similar thing is going on, usually you can activate a game's bought key on top of the already owned free license, not everyone is like Paradox.

"Paradox packages always have hidden apps that enable you to activate a key on top of a store purchase, for the exact same content. Make sure to not waste your keys by redeeming them this way."

This seems like the most likely possibility, thanks.

Sorry to be off topic, but since you mention a possible bug, I'd like to mention something that bugged me.
I noticed lately, games that are on sale, without mentioning until what date.
Games like: Obduction, Opus Magnum, Machinarium,...
If anyone knows anything, please let me know.

I assume its part of the Cerebral Puzzle Showcase when ends on the 8th.
E: corrected, runs through the 7th, not ends on.

I haven't noticed it before, not even in similar themed sales. If it was roulette, I'd bet on 7 too. 🙃

...and I would have lost, as although they participated in the above event, they are still on sale...
I also notice it in titles that don't participate in any event. It's getting annoying. 😕
