It is good for the first 6-7 years or so, but the quality took a sharp dive around Ultimates 3, and never really recovered beyond the Miles Morales Spider-Man.

Convergence and Identity Crisis are DC :P

The first thing I did when I got into comics late last year was read the entirety of DC's New 52. Yes, all of it!
I figured I'd dive into some Marvel next to balance things out :)

I also have stuff like Witchblade on my list.

Ah okay. (I didn't see these two though x) )
Well i would recommend Hawkeye my life as a weapon from Matt Fraction, but since you are reading Hawkeye vs Deadpool i assume you have already read that. I also adore Runaways (and next year tv show is coming) but story ends(?) abruptly so i can't actually recommend that.
I am reading, hence will recommend you to read some Image stuff such as Saga, Spawn, ratqueens, i hate fairyland, descender.
I also recommend Fables (though i am myself still very far from the end) especially if you played TWAU.
And i always find xmen stories easier to read than the avenger stories, but cannot say anything about ongoing comics since i dropped reading marvel since civil war 2. (i dislike they keep pushing event after event)

I have not read Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon yet! The Deadpool VS Hawkeye came from a Deadpool Ultimate Collection that I got and am almost finished with.

I actually own a bunch of Spawn, got about 8 longboxes full of comics as a sort of hand-me-down Christmas gift, and one box is nothing but Spawn. I am really itching to read them, as I like the character and have heard a lot about him.

I'm really liking X-Force so far. Deadpool got me a taste of that, so I found more to read.

I don't really read anymore, but, i used to only read marvel as a limiting factor - there's just too much to keep track of otherwise

Agreed, but I do love reading and I tend to do alot of it when I settle in for bed. If it's a good story, I'll read it.

I highly recommend everything Arleston did; like the Troy franchise or Ythaq. Lanfeust of Troy made me fall in love with french comics. Somehow it all feels so exotic and fresh with extremely likeable characters.

Not so sure I want to publicly recommend it lol But the Crossed series is my favorite comic series. If you like or can appreciate pretty fucked up stories, it might be worth checking out. It definitely isnt for everyone though

No, just Crossed. Badlands is one of the later series.
Also, Crossed is typical 2000s Ennis. If you read anything from him in the past 15 years besides Punisher MAX, you read Crossed as well, more or less.

Criminal
Fatale
Transmetropolitan
DMZ
The boys
Black Science
Fear Agent

I recommend each of them !

DMZ is amazing! I didn't really get much into Criminal but the rest are definitely on my list as well

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are a great team of artists (same guys for Fatale), it's hard to dislike their job. Maybe it's because in Criminal there are only short stories.

I absolutely loved The Fade Out and Fatale looks really cool but Criminal just didn't click for me. Then again, I only read the first trade so I might still pick the rest up some day

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't know "The Fade Out", because apparently it's still not published in my country :/ (I'll keep an eye on)
But its synopsis looks a lot like a story from of Criminal.
I don't know in how many "trade" (=books?) Criminal was originally published. In my country there are 6 books, 1 for each story. Some of these stories are better than other (I didn't really like the way the last one finished). It's each time (or nearly each time, I forgot..) a different protagonist. If you dislike the first story maybe you'll enjoy the next ;)
Fatale belongs to another genre : Fantastic/Horror.
But both use the same kind of narration which reminds me the noir movies. It's what I enjoy the most in their comics.

From the same authors, there is also "Incognito", a (noir) story of superheroes/villains, which I enjoyed too. BUT, I don't know if we will be able to read the end. It's been 7 years since the last publication. I remember that I heard it's because superheroes is not the kind of stuff that Sean Phillips like to draw :/

Better than Tony Stank!

I used to read a lot of Archie. I had a neighbor give me a PILE of those when I was a kid. I'd say those were my very first introduction to comics, along with Sonic (which Archie Comics also did, I believe?)

I have read several issues of Crossed (but not any in a couple of years at least), and while I found it interesting at times, I found the content to be over-the-top just for the sake of being over-the-top at times (Garth Ennis is wont to do that ;) ). I stopped reading it not because of that, but that I had to trim many titles from my pull list due to lack of funds.

How is the series going now? Has there been a "cure" found yet, or is it just mayhem and murder still? LOL!;)

Speaking of Garth Ennis. What did you think of Preacher? I'm still bummed that Steve Dillon passed away so young. I liked the style that he used for his art. :(

If you ever get a chance to read them, they are all available via TPB format. You know a series is going to be quite odd when a character is called Arseface! O.O

The current Superman series. It cannot get enough praise.
Or, if you want something old but great, hunt down Marvel's ROM series. One of the most overlooked greats of the 80s.

Seems worth mentioning that there's a Humble Comics Bundle going on right now (the 3rd or so this year, I think--past ones have been exceptionally good, especially the Image comics bundle that included Saga, among many others): https://www.humblebundle.com/books/kevin-smith-comics

I'm now reading Barefoot Gen. It's historical, autobiographical, satirical and anti-war. It reminds me of Maus, but more violent and tragic. It's shocking at times, but it tells about really important things that people shouldn't forget

If you can read frensh I'd recommend Donjon de Naheulbeuk

I've collected comics for many years now (decades now). It started at a used-book store when I would buy them for 10cents each! I would buy House of Mystery, Ghosts, Baron Weirwulf's Haunted Library, House of Secrets, Dr. Spektor, and many other tales of horror! My dad was given a cottage at Rondeau Park for the entire Summer, and he was allowed to take his entire family with him (he was an OPP officer). So, I would bring a stack of comics with me and read them over and over again. I could never get enough!

As the years went on, I actually started collecting comics for actually "collecting" in addition to the joy of reading them. I started with The New Mutants (I have the first appearance of Deadpool! Yay!), then collected several other X-Men titles over the years (I have some X-Men issues starting around issue #106 or so, and continued the series when it became Uncanny X-Men).

One of my favourite stories was the one where the Brood went and infected a bunch of people (including Wolverine!). I remember his healing factor eventually won out and destroyed the Brood parasite before it could fully take him over. The last scene from that issue (#24) is pretty chilling! In it, Wolverine is about to kill a young teenage boy that was infected by a Brood Wolverine has his clenched hand under the boy's chin, ready to pop his claws. Storm (I believe it was her) is there, and tells Wolverine "It's just a little boy!" (this is when the Brood reverted to the image of the boy). To this, Wolverine replies "There is no boy. Just a Brood." and all you see after that is Storm's horrified expression and the trademark 'Snikt' blazoned across the panel.

Right now, I collect a lot of indie titles, the main Bat-Titles (including Harley Quinn) and a couple of others from DC, and a few Marvel titles Squirrel Girl, The Punisher, and Venom).

I am reading Afterlife With Archie and Chilling Tales of Sabrina, two titles that take a decided dark turn in the Archie universe! For example, the first issue of Afterlife With Archie has Reggie hit Jughead's dog Hot Dog whilst driving drunk! Hot Dog is killed, and Jughead brings Hot Dog to Sabrina so she can bring his beloved pet back to life. Despite her protestations, she brings the dog back to life, and that is when the poop hits the fan! He has been brought back like the animals in Pet Semetary (the Stephen King novel), and Hot Dog bites Jughead!

Jughead becomes infected with a fever and eventually passes away himself! That isn't the end of Jughead, however! He comes back as a zombie, and subsequently devours his parents! As each issue arrives, more and more citizens of Riverdale are consumed and become zombies themselves (animals can become zombified in this world). Unfortunately, the series has stopped at Issue #9, and I am unsure if it will ever be completed. :(

Here is a small sampling of other titles I read:

  1. Rachel Rising
  2. Mind The Gap (seems to have ended with a proper finale...grrrrr!)
  3. Fables
  4. Y: The Last Man (hated the ending! Yuck!)
  5. Chew

And...well, I shall continue this later.;)

Dynamite Comics all the way!
But, in truth my favorite comics are always the crossovers.
Like the Amalgam Universe or the JLA/Avengers, mmm I always remember that fight between Batman and Cap.
I also really enjoyed the original Marvel Civil War and DC's Injustice comics (what can I say I enjoyed the game, the comics are just better)
But the problem with both Marvel and DC is simple fact it's always ongoing. No end to the stories.
I like self-contained stories, here is the beginning here is the end, but with the way they have it, here is the story......... here is the end..... okay we reset it so you can read it from the start again. Whats the point?

I guess thats the problem with all comics really.

Favorites Include

The Amalgam Universe (Marvel/DC), JLA/Avengers (Marvel/DC), The Injustice Comics (DC), and I could probably put the majority of Dynamites catalog here but I won't and just say there Legenderry series is aaaawesome.

I've only read The Walking Dead. The comics were expensive af, so I had to get them through less than legitimate means (because I didn't really know if I could get into comics or whether the expense would've been worth it).

I liked the first 100 issues, but I understood that 2€ (now 3-4€) for an issue is just too damn expensive for me.
I'd like to get into them, but I need like a 10€-15€ bundle for something like all the previous issues of Batman or something. :D
