While private-messaging systems for SG have been suggested before and shot down because they'd be used for begging and scamming, I think the system does really need some reliable way to communicate privately between winners and gifters.

Therefore, I suggest having a private ticket-style thread for each giveaway, which only the gifter and the winner can access. If the other person posts to it, it produces an alert for you in your message center (and maybe a more obvious alert to get people's attention.) Either person can choose to block it, just in case the exchange goes completely sour.

In addition to providing a reliable way to contact people and work out problems, it could be available to support; this would provide support with an easy-to-access record of what people said to each other in case there's a later dispute of some sort; I imagine this would often make dispute resolution easier by reducing he-said, she-said situations a bit.

Should we have this?

Maybe!

Sounds like a decent idea, but I have a feeling that cg won't modify Steamgifts much anymore. So far, most suggestions haven't been considered, so I doubt that one will be any different. :P

Nope, the messages were part of SGv1 (and SGv2 Beta), but it was removed due to performance issues. It was recently reimplemented.

Someone suggested the possibility of being able to thank the giveaway creator when they use the new key option with a little message. I liked that idea and see this as an extension of the same thing. Instead thanking, you could let the creator know of any problems if there are any etc.

This could also be quite useful for trading if a message history is stored.
That way you won't need to make tons of screenies and the conversation could be directly reviewed when dealing with support tickets.

Be prepared for tons and tons of scammers ready to pounce.

I didn't mean to say to just allow any two people to message.
Have something like a friend/white list that needs mutual agreement. Basically just like steam chat, but here :)

I thought everyone was already annoyed at all of the random level 0 friend requests on Steam :P

I do see the usefulness though. And you'd likely get less requests here because it still takes $100 account value to join the site. It would be difficult to keep making scam bot accounts.
