My liver values been out of whack for some years, and lately my diabetes went from slightly above average to a bit higher, i been taking metformin for 10 years always thinking that was to keep your bloodlevels in check, until my liver doctor said that wasn't so.
And a friend just told me his wife got stomach damage from taking that metformin too long.

Due an echo from 4 years ago, I always thought i had a possible fatty liver, now with a recent echo it's a fatty liver but very minor, but it's something that can recover, and with my alcohol usage in the past, blessed that it isn't bigger.
Now since a month i got another diabetes medicine (glicapizide) and bam both my liver values and bloodsugar levels are finally dropping to more normal levels and possibly can get the metformin removed.
After a year being sober i still debated to go back to moderate alcohol drinking, but i better take the money and run and quit while i am still ahead.

Personally, I found the easiest way to keep something going is being strict. For example:

  • There is a difference for between going swimming every Tuesday and once a week. The second one gives more leisure to making excuses and not going at all
  • During my fasting time, it is easier to completely skip on Chocolate and in between meals instead of just reducing it. Once started, it gets harder to control
  • I never tried out smoking or even drinking alcohol because it is easier to resist a temptation I don't know at all (may I have missed out several fun moments in my life because of this? Maybe, but I take that risk more willingly)

But that really differs per person if being strict is easy, for example exercise i could have a good kick in the butt from someone, as i mostly don't (although we had winter, and spring isn't really coming along yet, normally you could come home to a warm place, but with the gas prices so high, you come from a cold outside to a cold inside).

I can easilly say (fortunately) i am not going to drink, but when i drink, it's so easy to say oh i will have another one, and another (not that i got drunk) but i also just really like the taste of a mojito (even if that would be alcohol free).
Yes, alcohol brings some enjoyment, something to ease the tension but be blessed you never gave in to that temptation (and smoking) in the end you get more benefits from not doing them.

That's great news! There are so many good alternatives nowadays that alcohol isn't a must anymore I feel (I also quit drinking due to health issues for almost 2 years now). But best of luck whichever way you choose to go. πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

I'm from Belgium so I think you could find them too. Lot's of those you can just buy in a supermarket.
You have non-alcoholic wines, gins, beers, mocktails... etc
Top 10 alcoholvrije dranken

I have CFS and Fybromyalgia. Alcohol is not a good idea to mix with that.

Ah alcohol free, I generally don't like the taste of them (not that i tried everything) but that alcohol free beer it's really just lemonade and doesn't taste nowhere near real beer. :p
We used to have sun rise mixes like a mojito at our Lidl for 4 euro a bottle but our Lidl's stopped selling them (thus resorting to the expensive bacardi version) but apparently in Belgium and Germany they still sell those mixes there?

There used to be a very long story out there that 1-2 glasses of alcohol could actually be beneficial however this weekend when i googled many sites where like no even small amounts are bad, like 1 bottle of wine would equal to 5-10 cigarettes a week.

Then again when you look at a Betty White who took 1 (or more) vodka's a day and loved her hot dogs (processed meat is also "bad") almost became 100 years old.

But yeah in our cases it's better we just quit forever, in the end you really aren't missing anything. ;)

Oh yeah that's what i ment, sorry. Not all are great, true. But some are my taste (but I like fruity and light drinks so)
I can't find them either on the website. Don't know about the stores, I haven't visited one in a while.

At the end of the day, life is short and you need to enjoy it as much as you can. There are always healthier options but you still need to live right? I think your body will tell if you listen.

Yeah but offcourse you want to live as long as possible if you can (i mean with 11000 games my backlog is huge so i have to become a 100 years old atleast) :p
if it weren't for the diabetes / heart thing combo, it might have been easier to say oh i might take a drink again, sometimes i just wish i was one of those my glass is half full people, would made life so much easier without wanting to seek it in other things. :)
And yes maybe a sport like running or whatever can produce the same effects, but then i need to learn to get my butt off more.

Hmm, I never had alcohol fill that need for me so I can't really relate. I tend to seek comfort in books and company. And games for distraction. But I think having a longer life is always better.

And that's just 1 computer, 1 store, not even counting all the console stuff. πŸ˜‚

Well i been more of a weekend binge drinker, rather then daily, usually on the friday and saturday playing Team Fortress 2, a few drinks and very bad 90's house. In the beginning it just made me more loose in that afterwards i often went singing (and yes even at 0:00 much to the chagrin of my dad which was understandable) I never gotten really drunk, and in the end not even tipsy anymore, so can't say i continued for just that, and maybe it just had some placebo thing, i dunno.

Yeah a longer life, but hopefully we can also become that in a somewhat healthy way, or atleast without too many complications, and unfortunately for you, your conditions make that a bit difficult, but hope it stays manageable, then again i also read stories (for some reason) someone with diabetes has yet to become a 100 years old..

I always though old people's ailments would start at 70 or something, but many around me it already starts at 40, i got a female friend that also has pain often (she thought Fybromyalgia too and then not, but she is afraid to go to the hospital (and the results) while i am like better catch something ahead before it's too late. But i haven't seen her since when that all started so i don't really know how it is/feels for her.
But she is a school principal, 2 kids, household, and still manage to keep it all running, and i got big respect for that.

I actually see that picture before my eyes. Might have done similar settings, different game, same music ^_^
I'm Belgian so drinking is ingrained in our culture and habits. I don't see a problem with occasional drinking. It just can't become a need in my opinion.
A lot has to do I think with how we felt at that time. If we felt happy and carefree we attribute it to drinking but I think i's the whole picture. Drinking alone will never bring that feeling back.
Balance is key I feel. Statistically becoming a 100 has low chances anyway. But I understand your feeling, neither are CFS sufferers. Therefore balance, a healthy but fulfilling life. Up to you to decide what is fulfilling.
Yeah me too but it kicked my but too. There isn't much that can be done for Fibromyalgia. So it doesn't really matter, only if it matters to her, to know.

Which game? ^_^

Yeah Belgium is known for drinking (good beers too) and also eating (belgian frites). But i think drinking is in a lot of cultures, but also socially, if you are poor you often tend to it but then again high educated people love their (daily) wine or whiskey after work.
My parents used to drink a bottle of wine (and smoke) for years, a few decades ago that was just normal.
It's just a drug as any other but for some reason it's condoned (most likely also because of the taxes the governments get from it).

Well and i am a man, and overal women tend to become older then us. But that's really because men has to hear all the nagging from their wives so that lowers their life expectancy. Kidding. πŸ˜‚ But i am single so i don't have that (yet).

Yeah well i don't know the full details as she just doesn't want to talk about it, doctors first said she might have it and then they said she didn't i believe, but maybe she has something else (like f.e worse case a cancer, which could still be treated unless it's too late), she also has 2 kids, i feel you also have a responsibility to them.
She said she would come after i moved in, and we just gonna have some fun time, really hope so and looking forward to it. :)
She is also basically the only friend i got left, somehow i had female friends only, but 2 lived in england and it watered down.
After the move i might just try a board game club, just to get to do something socially.

It was Perfect Dark on the N64 with some friends :-)

Yeah that is all true. Same here. It's really hard to get around alcohol in our cultures because it's so ingrained in it.

Lol, and I thought it was because of the shenanigans they get in to ^_^

That's why it might be good for her to have it checked out. I hope it works out for her and for you. :-)
Good luck with the move (and hopefully move in). New environment, new leaf ;-)
Why not, sounds like a great way to get to know new people!

For many years I really did not like water--give me some juice (from concentrate); I never drank much soda.
Now, I regularly sip on water throughout the day. If I want some flavor, a tea bag is only US$0.10--much cheaper than E$4. The process of hydrating yourself all day every day should be an expense close to zero. Despite realizing that many do, you are not obligated to pay the liquid flavoring industry.

When I was young, I almost threw up at the smell of broccoli; now as an adult I accept that good food tastes that way.
Take control of your tastes--look for great alternatives; taste should not control you.

But i do drink tea (especially in the mornings to wake up), and coffee (a taste i acquired not that long ago) but i feel/"fear" too much hot drinks somehow upsets my stomach more (or it's just the caffeine from the coffee).
And i drink water too (when it gets warm enough heck i even put my drinks ice cold in the freezer/fridge).
But just tea/coffee/water alone bores me in the end, i do feel like i am missing a taste once a while, same goes for candy really, is it better for diabetes not to? Probably, does that make life feel really plain? Yeah.

When i was young i would basically throw up over any vegetable, i was forced to sit at the table but in the end i stuck it in toilet paper and then in my trouser pockets, later i learned to like some things like paprika or onions, but still today i don't like many vegetables.
But last week i accidently bought a bag of mixed nuts with slices of olive, i wouldn't think of putting a whole olive in my mouth (even though i never tried it), but holding the bag to my mouth taking small zips of nuts (and olive) i actually didn't dislike the taste.

On a sidenote which is crazy but sadly true, they predict a water shortage in a few years (most goes to useless data centers) but in other words they find reasons beforehand to warn us prices are going to drastically increase for water, a basic necessity for people..

That is great to hear. Sometimes the problem is not diagnosis, but finding the right med. I myself take metformin since 2018, but there's a good reason (blood pressure). I also had fatty liver before diabetes but I solved that part. I drink very moderately tho I always ponder if I should stop forever, tho there's no specific reason.
Right now high blood pressure is way worse problem than diabetes. I have had perfect blood analysis the last 2 years, so diabetes is under control. However stress and weight make me have pressure peaks too often. I try to lose weight but it's a slow battle.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I just wished finding the right med would been a bit quicker (not that i am impatient but they kinda let me hanging for years with bad liver values (and bloodsugar) and what that could possibly do to your body.
I waited a good 2 year due corona (waiting lists but also because my father died i had to get transferred to the hospital here, but the first reference was send to my general doctor who then passed away, so the whole reference thing had to start all over, which i didn't know ).
There are still many things unaccounted for (like i suffocated severely 3 times in the past, so much i thought i was a goner, i still have moments of food stuck in the throat thing but i learned to always have a drink near).

How did you solve that part of a fatty liver, it healed by itself?
My life could be considered full of stress, but (fortunately) i never had issues of a high blood pressure, it's always been good, but i do have cardiomyopathy and that's also not a great combo with diabetes.
Well as to stop drinking, many that do find it a revelation, that they feel so much better (personally i did not experienced that) but i do also find it can be soothing mentally, and having calm moments is also good for your health in the end.

I am (too) skinny so i don't really have any advice on losing weight, when i was 18 i was weighing 50kg, then i started lifting weights and gained 25 kg (i am still to this day about 75kg at 193cm), while for me i gained weight (was neccessary) i think for others it's a good way to lose weight (and i wasn't even a heavy lifter, 40-50kg tops).
i just hope even though it might feel slow, you won't give up and find your weight you are looking for, and i think it's a no brainer to say but if that drinking moderately contains any beer, well that's 1 way to lose some weight too. ;)

May 1 it will be 1 year, but i have stopped 1 full year before, then i felt that "urge" and then i had long moments of drinking something and then stay sober for 2 months or so until i got that "urge" again and so forth every few months.

When i quit i want it to be on a special day like on the first of a month (so it's easier to remember) but the last time i quit i was like oh i quit now, oh no i meant now, nope one more try, until i literally got sick of the booze (because it was corona i hated going to the stores with a mouth mask so i stockpiled and there was plenty), so maybe why i still got that in the back of my mind, and don't really have that "urge" now, although i do miss the taste of a good mojito (and yes there are all sorts of alcohol free stuff but it's like diet coke, it doesn't come close to the real thing).

But you are absolutely right, if i would start again it probably won't stay moderate, and just best i won't even begin again.πŸ‘

Wonderful news indeed! Hopefully your body will keep recovering and you will soon be able to remove metformin (and its financial cost and possible long-term side affects) from your life!

As you say, we are all different, I never liked the taste of alcohol. On the other hand, I do not have a sweet tooth, sadly I have mouth full of them. I know for me it would be easier (long-term) to cut all sweets out than to try simply reducing intake. Sooner or later, I fall down the hill - usually sooner. I almost immediately lost the battle in January when I made another attempt at reduction.

Metformin is technically free here (although we got an own risk of 350 euro a year, which means if you go to the hospital, have medicine like metformin, you basically keep paying until you reach 350 euro and then anything else afterwards is free for that year) plus on top of it about 150 euro a month for the insurance itself, and every year it keeps on increasing until i am afraid only those with a good income can afford healthcare.

Do you have phsycial issues from them (diabetes, overweight)? With my diabetes it's probably better to also cut down a bit on the candy, but i mean you also have to got to live a little. :p Hope you can find the strength eventually. :)

I know people can get off diabetes, but this sounds / is very rigorous, like what do you eat as your one daily meal then (especially if you already don't like many vegetables)?
I mean i already find not drinking a thing, but to remove basically anything good from your live, you are used to for decades to no longer take them anymore for the rest of your live, it's really big, spartan as they call it.
My diabetes levels might not be as severe (yet) though as yours since it used to be on the levels of just a bit too high but now apparently with that new medicine it was dropping again, so maybe even a slight change could already be effective?

I don't understand you mean you see results within years or weeks..?

Stuff like dark berries are expensive here (our government debated on cutting taxes off fruit/vegetables but they can't decide which is what so they decided not to..)

I already never been a breakfast person, and usually skipped it, and taking an a/z vitamin a day.

I think dieing from pain is a bit of an exaggeration, not everyone with diabetes ends like that.
And your situation is different you seem to get insuline shots/injections, i never had that, and i would say my levels were just borderline on the high side but not by that much, l don't know each countries measurements, but it should be around 4-7, mine was 7, though lately 10. And i only had 1 pill.

Offcourse i could cut down way on my eating habits like on candy, i eat my potato chips, if i had a bag of werthers originals (the most sugary and buttery thing there is) it would be empty in no time. And i basically sit a lot on my behind, if i'd tackle those two alone i might already be a long way, the question is, is such a strict (yes i still find it strict and it just differs for each person what they can and can't do/take) necessary?

Also with Keto you do certainly risk heart disease (just google it if you don't believe me), it's not really that cut and clear.
