They are not expensive. You can get them below $10 USD.

With the exception of RTS, they make a big difference in game play.

Just use this link. You save $10 and even more time than trying to get a non-official Xbox 360 controller to work.

I have two that I bought right off the shelves that worked fine. A Nyko PS3 controller and a Dreamgear xbox controller. It's not rocket science to get it working.

Again as I said before. There is a big difference playing non fps games on a controller than on a keyboard.

Depends on the game. Most games in shooters tend to work better with M+KB while stuff like RTS tends to work better with a controller due to the simple controls.

You find RTS games easier with a Gamepad? I can't even imagine something like Starcraft with a controller :P

My gamepad is used mainly for platformers or 3rd person games with minimal shooting (Bastion, Brutal Legend, etc). Everything else is KBAM.

I said tends to work better. Just because stuff like Starcraft doesn't work well doesn't mean others are the same.

Not saying this in a condesending way but, which RTS games do you find easier to play with a controller? I'm honestly curious because when I think RTS I think Starcraft, C&C, Warcraft, Age of Empires etc.

All of these games involve complex unit/building selection (making a box around a group, selecting an individual unit to give commands, etc). All of that sounds like it would be a huge pain in the ass using a gamepad...

For example, C&C 3: Kane's Wrath. That works pretty well. Basically, any RTS that has a console port.

That would still be the exception to the rule

There's also Halo Wars, though it's not that good for the Halo name.

I used Vjoy to get my badge, but I agree that a controller can make a huge difference in gameplay.

Actually the badge is available for a limited time so I can see people only getting it only for that.

Your post seems to be the first one about joypads! Joypads make an even bigger difference in RTS games than in most other games. Calling them an exception is kind of silly.

Congratulations for being the first to write a post Steam + joypads and also writing a post that is mostly untrue...

Well that's your opinion. In pro competitions you don't see people using controllers in the PC platform, I'll take a keyboard mouse control scheme over a controller any day when playing FPS games.

Playing shooters or platformers, it's controllers hands down.

Nope. Shooters are actually better with M+KB, due to the precise targeting of the mouse.

I find shooters like Beat Hazard a lot more responsive than a keyboard. Targeting is pretty much the same with the analog controls. But thats my playing style.

If you compare, the mouse can actually have higher sensitivity than the controller. On top of that, it has been proven in a scientific test that a M+KB user can whoop a controller user, given if they are on about the same skill level.

No one is going to believe you when you say "scientific test" unless you support the claim with a link/evidence.

On the other hand, I believe that such a test would support the mouse + keyboard setup. It's fairly obvious to someone who's used to both methods that a controller is less accurate.

There was a test by M$, using the game Shadowrun as the testing grounds.
I'll highlight some of the posts I've seen.
This one backs up what I said in the first sentence.
This second post by GriftGFX and the post below that on this link explains why I said M+KB whoops a controller.

It stands to reason that discounting cheats such as auto-aim, it's impossible to achieve the same accuracy or swiftness of movement with a joypad that you would using a device which allows near-instantaneous, pixel-precise movements.

That said, I suspect a mouse + keyboard user might have grievous difficulties keeping up with a joypad user in a football game such as FIFA or PES, for example :)

Pretty obvious. However, the controller dudes all have auto-aim on while the mouse+keyboard ones don't. Auto-aim can only do so much.

Wait, what are you saying my opinion is? You're very confusing. I didn't say anything about FPS games. I only play FPS games with a mouse + keyboard and wouldn't want to play one with a gamepad, much less with a joypad. A joypad would be terrible for that.

On another note: in the first part of your above comment you say you want a mouse and keyboard for a shooter, but in the second part you say that you want to use a controller for a shooter or platformer.

He said M+KB for a first-person shooter (i.e. Quake). Controller for a generic (side-scrolling, maybe TPS too) shooter (i.e. Zero Wing).

He actually didn't say generic shooter, but I see what you're saying. However, a "shooter" doesn't normally include the shmup genre that you're referring to. Anyway, I was mostly confused by his first paragraph in which he claims he's disagreeing with me about something.

A Gamestop 360 gamepad works perfectly for me. Only game I can't get it to work right in is Portal 2 and maybe Assasins Creed, but I haven't tried very hard for that game.

Man back in the 90's no one made a big deal about them. Everyone I knew had at least a $50 joystick, sometimes a gamepad too, just to play one of the few games that allowed it. It was a PC privilege. Then again back then you had your choice of hundreds of pads and sticks.

Sad that there are people just doing this for a badge and not to actually test products. I wouldn't be surprised if the same people actually get into the beta.

I'm doing it to test the new OS and see how good it is. And those doing it for the badge would just bother with level 1, cause level 2 only gives 50 xp.

For those who don't have controller:

  1. Install program called Vjoy: http://headsoft.com.au/index.php?category=vjoy
  2. Assign key called Button 2 to "A" in Vjoy menu and tick "Enabled" box.
  3. Run Big Picture mode.
  4. Mouse over the game you want to play and click "A" on your keyboard(not the left mouse button!).
  5. After game starts you should have the badge unlocked!
