I only play Epic mobile games. I have a Steam Deck. Why I play Steam games but regret it because I wasted tens of thousands of my currency on games. Could have bought a car.

If you haven't already, look into alternative launchers (like Heroic Launcher) to easily play your (free) Epic games on Steam Deck.

Epic isn't giving away games out of the kindness of their hearts.

I like the community pages - like discussions and art works and guides etc.... which Epic doesn't have

I don't like Timmy. That's probably the main reason. Also EGS didn't have a shopping cart for a long time. Also their client sucks. Also their shop sucks.
Oh and I don't think that Epic is 'charitable'. They just know that they need to bait people into their shop... years after opening it.

I think it's because Steam has a much more developed... how should I put it? "infrastructure" plus a habit that's second nature, as they say. Plus a lot of friends, plus conservatism.
Of course, this is just my humble opinion. I sometimes play Epic games in their launcher, and I can say that Steam is more convenient. I hope that Epic will become a worthy competitor in the future.

I'd rather buy a game on Steam to keep my achievements and community presence together than have it be isolated on Epic/GOG.
charitable company
Giving away free games to entice customers is not charity. They are not a charitable company, nor is Valve.

Kind of a weak reasoning if you don't even know if something is factual. Epic does have achievements, but:

For the longest time, Epic was a bare-bones store. The fact that, after YEARS of failing to keep customers, the only thing they offered was a lower price, and they started adding features just recently doesn't change much. Price isn't everything, and way too many people had bad first-time experiences.
Also, Epic-exclusivity, they pissed way too many people off with that; who will never use it because of that alone

I wasted a crapload of money on Steam all because of my Steam Deck but if I had a PC think I'd just stick to Epic. I have been adding the free games every week for years.

It's just Steam games on Steam Deck is more convenient. I can't manage third-party launcher games properly and storage.

Did you really waste it, though? You bought the games, you played them or maybe you’re yet to play them. Either way you have access to them now to play them whenever you want. That’s not a waste, that’s a successful transaction. It seems you just want free games for the sake of them being free. And I get it, free stuff is almost always good stuff but consider that Epic Games is a corporation with interests and investors to satisfy, they are not giving away free games out of the kindness of their hearts, but merely trying to attract you to their ecosystem so they can eventually lock you in there. It’s working.
Free games are nice, but buying them isn’t a waste.

I am opposed to any platform that pushes third-party exclusives on PC. I also clearly remember Tim Sweeney saying that the players—or customers—weren't what mattered, but rather the developers; his plan was to attract developers by paying for exclusives, thereby forcing players to use his platform (as if we were all stupid sheep). Furthermore, at least in my country (Argentina), Steam offers better pricing thanks to its regional rates—unlike EGS, which doesn't offer them at all. And I haven't even mentioned all the pro-consumer policies Valve offers compared to Epic—such as refunds, community reviews, and forums—which essentially turn the store into a social network.

This, customer is king. If you go against customers, well, don't be surprised when customers ignore/boycot you.
To this day, I am claiming free Epic Games simply because Epic has to pay them to the devs, even though I do not intend to ever playing them on Epic. WIN-WIN, devs get money from Epic, Epic bleeds and dosnt get anything from me outside of for them bad statistical data (claim and no spend) xD
And I use Unreal for Work.

Better player infrastructure, better sales, and better integration with 3rd party websites and services. There is also the fact that I prefer to do most of my transactions in as few places as possible. If I can get it on Steam, which already has my payment info, why would I want to give my info to Epic?
Outside of that, I don't mind either (gameplay-wise) because I user Playnite to launch games, include Epic games. I did have client issues a couple of times, but most of the time it launches seamlessly in the background.

Why give your payment info to Steam, for that matter? I've pumped plenty of money into my Steam account, but I've always left the "save my payment info" box unchecked, and instead enter it every time. Letting them store it is just one more potential attack vector for hackers. It may be a low-probability attack vector, but so are all of the other services whose accounts info has been stolen.

I like convenience. Which is why I chose the middle ground of limiting the scope instead. I would absolutely be doing it your way if I were less lazy.

You listed the one good thing Epic does, but didn't mention anything Steam does. It's an unfair comparison.

Tim Sweeney is what's holding them back. He is, to a large extent, the Elon Musk of the gaming world.

You could say Steam also does a lot of charitable things if you put it that way...
Steam gave us workshop, gave us "Remote play together", brought more than ever linux support, open the path to indies all over the world and plenty more.
Epic is a barebones shop that doesn't care about you in any way. They give games in hopes newer generation will have a library that will hold them there to fight the long libraries people already own on Steam, but besides the free games, Epic has nothing. Also you can use both, I have 600+ free games on Epic but only buy on Steam...
Lastly, if you know Tim Sweeney story through the years, you know he is not PC gaming friend... He came back to it when Steam already had laid out the world that build the pc gaming community and then got mad he didn't have his piece served...
The moment Epic grows to be the size of Steam we would have a lot of issues. Not to mention, Epic is heavily owned by Tencent, which is also not a great company.
Edit: I replied but honestly, this just feels like a troll post...

All of the above. Plus not wanting to support Unreal kind of replacing proven technologies with their inefficient but proprietary crap that parades as innovation. Or the guy's pro-AI whining, among others.
Fuck Epic. But fuck monopolies too. I wish GOG could be a serious competitor. Non-DRM... And they sell older products that actually work (at least at first), which apparently is a crazy concept.

Third-party exclusives and I don't like Tim Sweeney. I still use Epic for games like Alan Wake 2 though. A while ago I got some free games on epic that I wanted but then I decided I don't want to play them (about 5 games) on epic so I bought them on Steam when they weren't even on sale, just to get rid of the "list of games I need to play on epic". Kind of the same with GOG but then again GOG versions of old games usually work better than Steam versions, so I still have my backlog there.

For games on EPIC (only freebies, I've never spend a cent on the games there, except my Amazon Prime sub for like $8/year, which gives me also some EPIC, besides Amazon and GOG games)) I'm using Heroic Launcher, which is much faster, lighter and can link Amazon and GOG games as well. But still, because of the community, I guess, I spend much more time on Steam and if I have a game on Steam, I don't play at any other place.

I personally have both installed on my PC, and I'm generally not the kind of person that really minds having multiple launchers on my PC. Especially with just how much stuff Epic is giving away for free.
That said, the only times I ever bought at Epic was back when they had the big coupons. Especially at the start, when they just gave you 10€ off for every game 15€ or up. That was an absolutely insane deal. Of course I will buy the game at Epic for 5€ instead of 15€ at Epic.
But without that aggressive pricing, I just see no reason to buy from Epic. Yeah, Steam was there first, and I already have a library and friends there. But also, functions like family sharing or Remote Play Together provide some nice extra value, and I can't think of anything that Epic has that Steam doesn't. Really the only thing is the slightly better dev cut, which is nice, but also nothing that will make me switch sides. And in terms of prices, I usually get Steam keys for cheaper on bundle sites or other third-party platforms, so the price point indirectly goes to Steam as well.

You DO know that's the ONLY reason use Epic, right? For the free games. If they didn't do that, their store would have shut down by now.

Steam also gives free games, you can redeem this one now https://store.steampowered.com/app/674750/Yet_Another_Zombie_Defense_HD/ and there has been more in the past

I use both and I think Epic is definitely underappreciated and often bashed by Steam fanatics for no reason, but it doesn't change the fact that it's nowhere near Steam in terms of features and functionalities. E.g. this website is a proof for that - nothing like this could exist for Epic due to how poorly their support game keys, even GOG does a lot better job at it. Then of course there's the launcher that must be completely mismanaged and vibe coded at this point as I don't know how they still haven't optimized it too well and are also way behind GOG in terms of features. They kind of waste money on advertising without spending more money on proper development.

Why do most gamers prefer Steam when Epic Games gives away free pc and mobile games every week. Surely they should be supporting this charitable company instead of Steam?
