After you get all of your free card drops, occasionally Steam may give you Booster Packs with more cards, the frequency of which depends on how high your Steam account level is.

You get the booster packs (not expansion) if you got all the drops (and if I'm right if your level 10+ not sure)
And it is possible, getting a game with 5/6 cards, getting all the drops, getting a booster pack and be lucky that you get the 3 cards you need.

don't you think i've already checked the faqs? the reason i'm asking here is because i didn't find the information i was looking for! As they want people to trade/sell the cards they tend to skip over the parts where people are able to do it without spending. Thanks for the reply though-.-

Lets suppose you're collecting cards for Borderlands 2.
You get 3/6 Cards for playing the game.
If you have a high profile level and your lucky enough.. you'll get a booster pack for Bl2 randomly. and you can unpack that to receive 3 more cards.
That way... you would have completed a set!
Assuming that you got no duplicates along the way and you've got some crazy ass luck!

And if you DO get duplicates, you can try selling them on the market for a little bit of Steam Wallet money (even more if you get the rare "foil" card drop), which can be used towards buying the cards you DO need, or (with some patience) saving up for more games...
Alternately, after you've crafted a badge for a game, you can keep your duplicate cards to try leveling up that badge, too.

hi guys, so i just recently bought a game with game cards. so how does it work?
from what i gathered you get half of the cards drop during gameplay and the rest you get from expansion packs and trading right?
how do you get the expansioin packs? also, is there a way to get the whole set of cards without spending a dime or receiving them from others? basically i want to know if i can complete my set withouht buying them, trading them or receiving them. also if you could explain how the expansion packs work that would be great.
cheers
