I've played Witcher 3 GotY for 200 hours on a home cinema setup (1920x1200, 100 inch screen, 7.1 surround, couch & steam controller) and had the time of my life.

Now I wondered which game I should play next. It has to be a game that profits the most from being played on that setup instead of a simple K&M, 1440p monitor setup.

The poll games are from my backlog that I'd imagine doing well. (Removed Skyrim from the list as it'd probably win by popularity. It's definately on my list, even though I played it for 60h (no story) already).

Apart from that, I'm open to try any game. It's hard for me to make a choice right now so I'm grateful for any suggestion. If I could, I'd play them all right away, but I have to start somewhere. I'll probably play the one voted highest first.

Which game would you want to play the most on a projector setup?

View Results
Alien: Isolation
Assassin’s Creed® IV Black Flag™
Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition
DARK SOULS™ III
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Game of Thrones - A Telltale Games Series
L.A. Noire
Life is Strange Complete Season (Episodes 1-5)
Mad Max
Middle-earth™: Shadow of Mordor™
Mirror's Edge™
Quantum Break
Saints Row IV: Re-Elected
SOMA
Tales from the Borderlands
The Long Dark
The Walking Dead
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition
The Wolf Among Us

I haven't played/don't own most of the games on the list, but I'd say Saints Row IV is not worth playing with cinema setup. The graphic has some weird artifacts on the edges even on highest settings, and of course nowhere as good as Witcher 3.

I would go for Black Flag. Would really want to see all those sea battles on cinema setup.

I've tried AC1 a decade ago but never finished it. Haven't played any AC since then.
I'm often told that Black Flag is the best of the series, and it appears to have the best reviews, too.

Installed it now and I'll try it for the battles.

Yeap it was one of the best games in the series if not THE best. People i know did enjoy it pretty much, even though they aren't AC series fanboys like me. Hope you will enjoy it as well. :)

Nice setup mate, sounds comfy as hell. I'd play all those highly cinematic games on your list, that don't involve EXTREME reflexes. Quantum Break is an excellent game if you like sci-fi time travel stories and third-person shooters, plus it has a TV like web series strung through it. >Observer_ is meant to be good, a detective story set in a Blade Runner-esque world. Owlboy if you want to kick back and relax for some wholesome nostalgic fun. I'd certainly give them a try!

I'll vote for The Long Dark. It's an amazing game under any circumstances, but I think the immersion would be incredible when played on a big screen.

After playing 11 of the games on the list, I have to say that the ONLY one on it that deserves a projector screen is Alien Isolation. That game feels like you were thrown into the franchise. And the atmosphere would just feel right on that kind of display.

Alien Isolation was on the top of my backlog anyways. Any suggestion for must-have mods? I've heard AA, screen reflection and improved alien AI are worth installing.
Or should I just go vanilla?

I never use mods on a first playthrough. And I still need to complete one. Haven't played it in a bit and forgot what I was doing and where I was in the game. I think I need to restart,.

I'd play Alien Isolation with an extra diaper setup just to make sure you don't ruin your chair cause it's scary enough as it is so on a cinema setup?

I'd vote for cinematic-like games, so TWD, LiS and Wolf, I didn't play other cinematic games on the list (like tales of borderlands).

But it's really up to you, all positions are good enough, horror games will benefit a lot from such setup, as well as immersive RPGs and alike.

Tales from the Borderlands was one of Telltale's better games, up there with Wolf Among Us.

Cinema setup = ultimate immersion. Alien: Isolation is the first game I think would need that.

After that, maybe whichever game has the cutscenes you care about most.

That sounds amazing. Looking at the poll I voted for Mirrors Edge. I would imagine a game where the focus is scenery and experiences... A game like that would seriously be breath taking with that setup... There's moments like that in Assassins Creed and Dark Souls too though.

The only drawback I've noticed is, that sometimes the projector fans noise can get annoying under increased heat (less of an issue since my setup is in the basement).
Also since you need lots more lamp hours for gaming than when used for movie-use only, it could get expensive to buy new lamps.

Luckily my projector is pretty bright even during eco mode. Needs a completely dark room (which I have).

About response times, trailing and input lag; haven't noticed any drawback. Even racing games felt enjoyable. And I wouldn't want to play competitive FPS on it anyways.

Loved playing coop games on the projector, like Mario Kart (emulated), Lego games and any party splitscreen games. Just needs 4 controllers and the evening is saved.

I would avoid cheap pocket sized projectors, unless you just want to put them in a completely dark room not that far from the wall. They often employ weak light bulbs to keep heat down (which means that you won't see anything if the room isn't completely dark), are not very durable (and a replacement costs more than the projector itself), the screen they project rapidly lose detail with distance and most of them just adopt VGA resolutions and don't have a speaker.

I have an economic HD projector (about 250€ here) that i use for couch multiplayer sessions with my friends. Image quality is not that great actually, but since i plugged it to a WiiU (mostly for SSB and Mario titles) it's not a big deal. Other than that, you have the advantage of putting everything inside a briefcase and bringing it everywhere you like as long as you have access to an empty wall. I wouldn't use it with my gaming sessions by myself though, image quality with a monitor (unless you're ready to shell more money than a decent TV for a good full hd projector, not counting replacement lenses and light bulbs) is still sharper and more colorful - but again it depends on your projector, the source and the light in the room along with settings.
And yes, the fan is noisy, but when playing with friends (or with headphones) is hardly an issue.

Hey there!
Iam owning a home cinema setup as well (133inch screen) and there are several games that benefit hugely from it.
If you can identify with JRPGs i cannot recommend NieR:Automata enough here. It has gorgeous graphics and in combination with its good story it lets you fall in the game world entirely. I think it has been my best gaming experience in the last 5 years.
If i had to choose one from your list i would go for Dark Souls III as it really shines in the most important moments. Like you will really see how big some of the bosses/creatures are. Beware that it will be an exhausting experience though :P
If you want a more relaxed experience choose one of the telltale games (or Quantum Break).
Many others recommended Alien:Isolation, i cant say much about it, since i havent played it yet.

Alien Isolation is perfect for a Home Cinema projector setup.
Maybe even Headphones if your Amp has Dolby Headphone or similar system.
May be too immersive however and shorten your lifespan ;)

i've played a bunch of these. voted for life is strange because it's my favorite, but here's more detail. i use a logitech f310 controller which is pretty similar to xbox 360:

  • batman arkham asylum - felt right with a controller and i played the whole thing in my living room from the couch.
  • deus ex human revolution - didn't try a controller since i don't usually like them for first-person. this one was all mouse and keyboard at my desk. hacking is more annoying than it should be with the mouse, but everything else felt right.
  • life is strange - this game is like watching a movie but you are also in it. definitely recommend playing with a controller from where you'd usually watch movies.
  • assassin's creed black flag - i played almost all of this from my couch, and always with my controller even if i was at my desk. i also tried streaming it to my tablet just to try it out. works great on the couch, especially when sailing.
  • soma - my most important recommendation here is to play in the dark. i used mouse and keyboard at my desk and that felt right to me.

With a giant screen immersion is a must. So, my vote goes for both AC4 Black Flag (because of its scenic visuals) and Alien Isolation (because is a great game and a very atmospheric one to boot, it really shines with a 7.1 surround system since it heavily uses audio clues for both atmosphere and gameplay reasons).
