Did you manage to buy a GPU between 2020-2021?
Absolutely agree with you. I'm holding with a 1080ti, hoping it doesn't break. Thanks for the links

yep im running a 980 ti but i will wait a bit longer to buy a new pc xD

Very easy to get a gpu in my country. You only need to pay 5 to 10x the actual value. I could buy any gpu I wanted right now, brand new, from official retailers. There are gpus here costing more than 2 (decent) cars.

You're Brazilian, I can tell. Opened your profile just to be sure.

You could consider buying something second-hand. You just need to often check ads.
I bought a new (at least for me) pc in June, I was looking for a new one and kept an eye on a classified ads site for a while (like a couple months, because prices were, and still are, crazy).
I managed to find a good second-hand, 1-2 years old pc, with a nice 2080ti and fast SSDs, and the guy sold me his 240hz monitor, gaming keyboard and mouse for something like additional 200β¬. I spent what I find to be a lot of money and traveled 1000km just to get it, but I feel I made a deal, since people ask way more money only for the pc!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, when in doubt, second-hand purchase is worth it. But you gotta be careful what you get yourself with. I got scammed with a $350 laptop that I wanted to use for simple gaming. The specs were different than the one that arrived and I made the mistake of sending the money as friends and family. I wasn't aware when it happened and I paid the mistake and got a laptop that maybe was worth $150, but not more than that.
Carefully analyze the account you're dealing with, some of them are there to hook you up and just make a quick buck off of you. While for you it might be a long time-saving. If it looks like a good deal, it might be not. Just be vigilant. I will still buy used components if I have to, I've not considered for a video card in a long time.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, I'm sorry about that. I never trust anyone.
That's why I took my car and drove all that road, so I could see and try the pc. Of course, only after having him send me a list of the components of the pc, so I could check prices for similar stuff.
The guy prepared some games to try and all went smoothly. We took our time to redact some sort of a contract, listing parties, every component and original box, price, payment method and reception, declaring the pc was working at moment of sale, and signing the document.
It was a long day but it was well worth it.
I'm a bit sorry for the guy, he had to sell cheaply his pc to make a quick buck, he was in obvious need of money. But if not me, someone else would have taken it nevertheless.

Lesson learned to trust my gut feeling when the guy seemed a bit suspicious.

If I could, I would. The purchase was made when I was in Norway, and the guy shipped it from Sweeden. So I trusted that people in the north aren't going to scam you because they pretty much have a decent to even good life even with a minimum entry salary so, they wouldn't struggle. I spoke with the guy a couple of times and he said he needed the money and he would repay me back afterwards. I didn't ask a full refund, but a partial, for what the laptop was worth. That happened in 2017, didn't contact the guy ever since after that. I said to myself, it's not worth chasing something.

what methods did you use to get yours?
I waited in queue at EVGA for almost a year (3 days shy, IIRC), but got it at retail. Sold my old GPU (RTX 2070) for about half what I paid for the new one. I could have sold it to pay for my new GPU (nearly) completely, but I sold it to a friend who really needed a GPU. Good karma and all that.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's crazy. Checked our local prices for second-hand RTX 2070, and for some weird reason they do indeed cost almost as much as a brand new RTX 3060, the difference is like $100-150.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nah, it's not. I'm just surprised how expensive second-hand 2070 currently are.
Comment has been collapsed.
For some who have waited so much, this must have had an emotional impact. The thing is that, some people who wanted to buy it at MSRP price, had to wait at least 6 months to just give up and use whatever extra they saved in that time and bought it off scalpers or something.
Comment has been collapsed.
I bought a rx 6700 xt 100β¬ (?) overpriced, that was in april, ItΒ΄s worth it beacuse these months I have played almost everything I couldn't in the later years due to my old gpu.
Comment has been collapsed.
Probably it took longer to increase AMD gpu prices at the store where I bought it, today they exceed 800 β¬ there.

My solution is to be too poor (and too depressed/indifferent to do anything about that) to give a crap. :3
My 9-years old gaming laptop that at this point is probably weaker than most "Notebooks" (but still has a much more badass cooling system) is getting the job done just fine (probably helps that I don't give a crap about the "new big games" either though...). Yeah, it's gonna croak eventually, but that's a "then" problem. XD
I realize that your situation probably didn't leave you much of a choice, but my point is, for anyone else who does have a choice- Why even bother? If they have a working GPU... just keep going with that one. There are countless games on Steam which it can run just fine. The best way to deal with bloated prices and scalpers is to not engage with any of that in the first place.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're right, I often times I ask myself that, why do I even bother. But then again, it's that need to have something that runs everything you want to play at High or Ultra High, or if you've got a side job like streaming, you want to provide people with games that you enjoy at a higher quality, so you're required to upgrade, you're required to find solutions.
That's the case for me as I want to play games for my Youtube Channel that I enjoy and not restrict myself to games that people no longer want to see because they are 5-10 or even 15 years old.

I am honestly resigned to be pushed out of PC gaming.
PCs are insanely expensive, it's like someone turned back the clock 20 years, except instead of PCs turning into an overpriced pile of obsolescence in 3 months, tech has turned stagnant and pricing has become Apple-like (no thanks to Apple themselves - if you have two grand to spend on a PC you're probably better off buying Apple shares instead)
Games have become progressively more expensive, too, over the years. Sales and bundles have been in decline a long time now.
Microsoft has returned to their terrible old ways after giving some flash of hope, while at the same time picking up new bad, and don't get me started about Linux (which I have used for a long time and still use).
It's okay, though. I can play whatever my machine still runs and whatever I have. If I get sick of that, it isn't like gaming is all there is to life.
Every time a gamer opens their mouth there's a considerable chance they're going to say something horrible and/or incredibly short-sighted (let's put it like that) anyway, so the farthest away I am from this particular subculture, the better for my sanity, too.

I strongly agree. If you buy a PC just to play games at over 75 FPS and that's it, you're wasting your money. It's better to get a console and be done with it.
I use my PC for a lot more than gaming, so that explains why I want to get a good PC.

What I don't understand is what are you doing on this website that is dedicated towards gamers if you're at this point really upset with the gamer mentality? You've been here for 9 years, why are you so frustrated about it? Is it because you're struggling financially and you're not able to keep up with the new hardware that really cost a lot of money? There has to be a reason why you're feeling frustrated about it, so please feel free to share. I'll try to look at things from an open perspective and understand you.

now it's way cheaper to buy a laptop with a good graphics card than is to make a new pc
an RTX 3080 is 3 times the price

GPU market is broken here in my country - most of actual GPUs are not available and those few stocked GPU models are at insane prices.
no GPU = no new PC build for me :(
Comment has been collapsed.
well, I want to use my Steam / Uplay / Origin / GOG library too ;)
I could use PS5 for PS exclusive games but PC is my favorite gaming platform, I prefer mouse over game controller for FPS games too.
Comment has been collapsed.
I get you, but I think there's a solution for the mouse and keyboard for PS5 games. You can actually plug and play with one if you wish, just that you gotta bring your console a lot closer or place it as PC unit next to your desktop PC.
I've got a PS4 and I feel the same way, I'll only buy the games I can find exclusively on that console, but as we've seen, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted and probably other PS exclusive are slowly creeping in the PC, which is awesome!
I favor PC over any other console because I have a massive backlog of games on Steam and I've used it all my life, but if there's a particular game that is on consoles, I'll not shy from trying it. I always wanted to have a Play Station in the past, so I got one, and I realized that I don't play as much as I wanted. PC is still my go-to when it comes to gaming.

well, personally i dont care at those silly prices, if i cant play it on my 1050ti i dont buy it and if it dies i got my laptop as a backup (4600h w 1650) ... got this thing for 680β¬ before it jumped up to 770β¬
Comment has been collapsed.
At this point, my only problem is the GPU as it needs an upgrade. My video card is 5 years old by now, so it's still holding up well I gotta say for most games I play and I've tried. I don't see why upgrade, unless I'm looking at having it a decent PC for the next 5-8 years.
Comment has been collapsed.
Prices were worse early in the year because there was no 3080 ti and everything wasnt mining locked so they cost even more and there was even less stock. To buy a card then it would cost me 1 1/2 times more than it does now and still there would probably be no stock. Now i can go in to most pc stores and actually get a 3080 for around $1500 US but maybe thats just an Australia thing.
Comment has been collapsed.
its $500 more than it should be but still $500 less than than the going rate that it was 6 months ago when i got mine. Thing is companies were selling prebuilds for less than the going price of the GPU thats how i got my whole setup https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/2DpKDc paid just under $2000USD

You will need a plane ticket here.
You will need to buy GPU with a (nearly?) full build rig in a bundle.
And maybe two weeks of quarantine. =)
Comment has been collapsed.
That's exactly what I did and it helped a lot. My GTX 1060 still keeps up with recent games and that's awesome. I've upgraded my CPU & RAM (Motherboard was also required) and that increased my gaming experience by a lot, because my real problem before the upgrade was that my CPU was bottlenecking the GPU.

There is a surefire way. Go under the longest local bridge. Go at night. Seek an old woman with blue legs. Tell her Chiasm sent you. Follow her. Don't look into her eye. Don't ask questions. Drink what she gives you. Leave quickly when you wake up. When you get home, lock the doors, close the curtains, treat to your wounds and wait. A box will arrive in 2 days time. Plug what's inside into your PC. Play games and try to forget.

Physical stores have been the best bet for me to get a GPU.
In the US, there are Microcenter stores that you can arrive at before they open, get in a lottery or get a voucher for a GPU, then if they have stock that day then you can buy it at or near retail price.
After 2 different mornings at a Microcenter in 2020, I got a 3080.

Havent heard that name since they closed their store in Silicon Valley.
Gamestop still has a big footprint in the US with brick and mortar stores and surging online presence.

Does Gamestop sell in store in terms of PC components though? I haven't been inside a Gamestop in many years.

Worth noting that the EVGA website has some models stocked again. EVGA has had a 10GB 3080 for $870 in stock for a month now, the bubble seems to finally be deflating. If anyone was interested can knock 3% off with my associate's code: FWBXGF17CKOMCIV
My recommendation would be to hold off if possible though, with Intel, RDNA3, and the 4000-series NVIDIA cards all launching in what's left of this year there should be some good options to pick from.

Thanks for the update. I have not been looking to upgrade at the moment my GPU as I've been playing some older games and whatever I play runs like a charm. Besides, I really desire the Steam Deck. It's a trade we all must make. ππ»
But overall, with price drops and such, more GPU's became available I assume. On the other side, crypto isn't doing too good.

GameStop has risen from the dead and has made huge strides in its online presence.
Bob Ross toaster that toasts the image of Bob Ross onto your toast. Star Wars helmet and sabers, even baby Yodas.
Anyways, here is a link to their online video card offerings.

Guess the closest is Ireland

Tho they dont appear to carry components there like they do in the US.
Might be the same for Germany and Italy.
They do have controllers and hardware accessories for 4 platforms.

International shipping sucks, so, it's local store for me. They have to pay a lot of taxes and they end up being pushed on the customer, so, GPUs here are about 30% more expensive than whatever price the store managed to get. If I could I'd get a premade from USA, but they never ship outside of it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sadly only major retailers here have discounts for hardware and they only sell laptops and all in ones. It's why I bought my custom PC on 2011 from a small local retailer, upgraded its GPU on 2016 (bought it from a local retailer as well) and haven't touched it since.
I have been saving for the time in which I inevitably need to fully upgrade thou.
Comment has been collapsed.
The vote should have an option for those who didn't try. I built a new PC Dec 2019, just before the shortage, so I didn't really need to get myself a new GPU, specially since I don't play lots of latest graphics intensive AAA titles.
Edit: typo, PN -> PC
Comment has been collapsed.
Not sure. I had a few opportunities to get one, at almost the intended price, thank to a friend who kept pestering an distributer because he really needed a new GPU. However, I gave up the opportunity, despite the fact that I could have bought the new one and sold the old at profit, making the upgrade pretty much free. I just didn't feel right exploiting the situation.
Comment has been collapsed.
RTX 2060 Super. Due to shortage I was able to sell it for more than I bought it for (partially because it was only about 4-6 months old). And I was getting a new 3060 directly from the distributer so I was getting it at almost at the non-insanely-hiked-price-due-to-shortage.
Comment has been collapsed.
instead of buying a new gpu i use a combination of my pc and geforce now :) prices are just a bit too much atm for me
Comment has been collapsed.
I was about to do the same, but I upgraded my CPU and RAM and that boosted my PC A LOT. I can run games that I barely had the capability on Low to Medium or High because I no longer have a bottleneck. So, for my GTX 1060, I am surprised it still holds up.
Comment has been collapsed.
1060 is still a good card because in next generations, the power doesnt progress as well as the price. On that a gtx 1060 is like a 1650 in term of performances , reliable for 95% of the games except last AAA with 6gb required
take a look on this graph, the 6500xt (2022) is like a 1060 (2016) π₯
Comment has been collapsed.
Truth! An upgrade would make a whole difference for me, but I can't do it at this point in time anymore. Some setbacks came through and now I am supposed to prepare myself for other things.
Judging by the graph, I'd find myself 2x less impressive than a 3080+

Hello,
As gamers, I think we need to be united and work together in order to get our hands on GPU's that we dream to have so we can play games that we love. So, I've made this discussion so if you have a way that you've used to get your GPU during this difficult time and you're not afraid to share your method with the community you can do so right here.
I have obtained one for my wife and I thought I should share with you a few things that I've done and got my wife her new GPU in less than 2 hours at an MSRP price.
Last year, my wife's GPU failed and in the middle of the pandemic prices were still as crazy as today. With a bit of research, I managed to combat the scalpers and the bots that used to mess with your purchases a lot more than today.
For some of you want to get a new GPU once you get your weird listings from Ebay or Amazon it may become a challenge.
What I like to suggest people is to check with your Local/National website stores or physical stores first as most fights happen online, on an international level, you may be lucky to get yours locally. If that doesn't work consider a few of the methods I'm about to suggest.
TimetoCop - Discover all the GPU Twitter accounts alerts, sort them by category and choose the one that meets your expectations.
NowinStock - is a FREE web service that monitors online retailer websites to see when products come in stock or up for pre-order. As soon as we see stock available for purchase, we alert you! To receive these alerts, you must register. Don't worry, NowInStock is completely FREE and SPAM-FREE. We make you register so we know which items to alert you on.
Youtube Lives - If you prefer to have a live perspective of what's going on, here's another way to check the stock.
Browser Extensions - Another way to get notified of prices and changes on website is to get browser extensions like OctoShop that informs you of changes and availability for prices. If you want to learn how to use it, just follow this guide.
Bots - Now this may be your last resolve, but if you're desperately in need to get your hands on one, you can use the same method as scalpers and crypto miners use to get their hands on a GPU. What I used was a notification bot, which informed me if there were changes on a particular website. Do keep in mind that bots are useful if you wish to purchase 2 or more GPU's and not for only one, so that may be something you need to pay attention.
The bot I've used is called UptimeRobot and it is used to monitor downtime on servers and just overall check their status. There was a tutorial that I've followed that I'm happy to share with you, which helped me to get my wife's GPU from NewEgg, ship it to UK and enjoy it. The purchase took me 2 hours and it got shipped in about 4-5 days if I remember.
The GRAPHICS CARD SCAMMERS are getting clever...
Please stay safe out there and don't get trapped in the idea of the tricky prices as you can get yourself in some serious trouble, make sure you double-check before you purchase or discuss with someone on eBay or any other website.
Now that I've shared my best tips to get a GPU in 2021-2022, what are your thoughts and what methods did you use to get yours? Any kind of tips, advice or method works and I'm sure it will help others to get their hands on a brand new GPU.
I hope this helps. Merry Christmas! π
