So basically i woke up today and saw this message.
Apparently i'm not alone and all of the keys for this game got revoked. It doesn't matter from which source you got it. For me it is just a dick move. Too bad this game isn't on steam store anymore, so i can't report it. :( I guess there's not much i can do about this situation other than just sit in a corner of my room and cry, cause of -1 to my library. :(

EDIT: Official response by the dev

EDITx2: NEW OFFICIAL RESPONSE BY THE DEV: link
His talking to valve about reactivating those redeemed keys. Only time will tell if it's another lie or truth. Can't judge right now, at least he sees his mistake.

SidAlphas video about the topic: link

ALSO GUYS, REMEMBER: While it is important for people to be aware, DO NOT make this a witch hunt. Remember the punishment for "calling out" and resist the urge to post attacks on individuals.
I've changed the title of the discussion. I admit i've got a bit too emotional and i should't have called anyone like that.

The game is back in the library for everyone that had it already. The topic will remain open for 2/3 days and after that i will close it, as there is no point in keeping it open.

Yes.
No.
I don't own this shitty game.

You missed the part where apparently the "dev" removed the game from the download earlier this month. (Which may be why the game got removed from the store to begin with)

Edit: While I'm updating, worth noting the depots have been re-instated.

But hey, this "dev" is just another asset flipper who was bribing his way through Greenlight by promising keys for votes anyway:

  1. The keys is something I can't confirm. That seems to be focused mostly on dealings between the developer and the "Who's gaming now" website/group. But I don't know the full details, and the clearest explanation the dev gives is "Keys were leaked by a member. I didn't sell the keys elsewhere. As result banning the keys"
    (From the ongoing thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/473900/discussions/1/1368380934276665796/)

Speculation:
A likely timeline on what happened is that Dev. handed out keys for promo purposes, those keys ended up on grey market reseller sites (which should be absolutely no surprise, as there's enough folk who try to turn any promo giveaway into personal profit that way), Dev. saw them there, didn't like that and revoked the lot.

  1. Regarding the changes in depots, If publishing a new version should also include adding of new depots for that new version. That didn't happen. As things stand now, anyone who still has the game in his/her library can't download a working copy.
Don't know if that is intentional or not, but it is bad form either way.

Question though:
On what do you base your statement that these are "beta" keys to begin with ?
I can't find evidence that this game ever had a beta program for which keys were handed out, but I may be missing something.

Have you seen the links with proofs that it was the developer who promised and gave the keys to people in exchange for greenlight votes? Right here on Steamgifts... Also WGN owner confirmed he got the keys that were given away there directly from that same developer as a compensation for some work he's done.

Reddit link shows this dev already removed all the depots a year ago, but these changes were later reversed by Valve. Will probably be this time too.

There's no proof whatsoever that any of these keys in mention are beta keys. If you have some, please provide it, as you are the only person on the internet who claimed that revoked keys are "yellow", not even developer mentioned that.

  1. Never had the game, so no key to confirm anything.
  2. Even if true, that means that dev intentionally gave people beta keys with plan to revoke them latter after promising them retail keys, makes this even more sinister as they planned it all along few years ago.

Why are you talking as if you know what you're talking about? I already admitted keys could be "yellow" as you said, wherever you got that info. I don't know. No one else has any info on that. How are you in possession of this information?

And as I said, even if it's true, giving people beta keys with a plan to revoke them a year or so later without telling them these are beta keys is fucked up. And why the dev didn't say "oh guys I gave you beta keys and beta is over". No, you can see their claim that all the keys are leaked by team member, and since they are the one who gave the keys to people... was the member using their steam account too?

That said, this dev deleted all the depots for their game. So even people who bought it on steam can't download and play it. And it's not the first time, they did that a year ago, got caught and Valve restored the game to original state. What does that have to do with "illegally acquired or leaked keys"?

And no, I don't want any dev to be the bad guy, and I'd be the happiest if "digital suicide" and other affairs never happened (and I mean happened, not "discovered") because that would mean the world is a much better place than it apparently is.

With that, I'll stop posting here before you accuse me of having anything personal against you next. Stay well.

I'm calm, why do you think otherwise? I mean I know it's just text, but come on, stop assuming things please. And I haven't deny that what you're saying is (potentially) right. Feel free to read again. I simply asked you about this beta/yellow keys, several times, and you always skipped to answer. I even said I don't know...

Yes I see your response below now. That's a nice clue to have. Still makes things shady, but yes it's kind of different from revoking retail keys (the reason I didn't even think of beta keys is because of what dev said themselves on steam about revoked keys being from re-seller stores and users said it's not true but they got it from him or on WGN).

Yes, that's true about beta keys not being meant for sale.
And as for your feeling, I'm not a native speaker and apparently sometimes can "sound" too direct/open/aggressive, as I've been told before. Might also be a cultural thing of sorts.

Assuming all of these keys were beta keys... the question remains, did the developer, when he gave these keys to users here on steamgifts and WGN, and also other places where he distributed them, told anyone about them being beta keys and was that part of the deal, or were they all expecting/thinking those are regular retail keys.

I'll try to be as clear as I can here.

  1. If they were retail keys, and not stolen but dev simply changed mind... it's messed up.

I think we can both agree on this. But what I'm saying, while agreeing with you that they might as well be beta keys and I don't know that for sure is this...

  1. If they were beta keys - and no one knew about it but dev - it means he had the right to revoke them as you say, but it's still messed up on an entirely different level.

Because giving people beta keys that you plan to revoke one days without telling them that keys are not beta keys is some really nasty sh... Specially if he gave beta keys to a 3rd party like WGN and didn't make it clear so they can make it clear to end users.

There's also the option you're always mentioning, and I assume it would be

  1. Dev gave beta keys and informed 3rd party of those keys being for beta only, in which case it's not dev's fault at all, but the 3rd party who didn't inform the end users of keys being for beta and giving/selling them away.

This would be less damaging to devs reputation, but it's still a weird situation, and doesn't explain why the dev said "a member leaked keys" and "they are bought outside steam store so they are banned" and not simply something about beta and so on.

In the end, we can all just assume things based on some facts and hear-say we have access to. You know about your key, but can't be sure for all keys. I know what I've read and seen about devs really shady behavior in the past. Valve doesn't work as it's weekend. I'm sure they will investigate this comes Monday and I'm sure they can see for sure what kind of keys were revoked and everything else, so unless other users can confirm after checking their keys... we won't know what sort of a mess this really is... but it's a mess nevertheless I think.

It's probably an intentional action for the developer to hide the game's content from its owners. Furthermore, this exact same thing happened last year as well although it got reverted.

People say it includes WGN too, which is legitimate promotions website. Basically, dev gave the keys (probably to get some Greenlight votes or whatever at the time) and then removed all keys "because they are not bought on steam" which is a very ridiculous reason because the exact purpose of the keys is to get the game outside of steam for steam.

I didn't have the game, just read the discussion on the forums.

also, if you google a bit, the same dev did similar/same thing a year ago, according to reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/4khdsx/posted_some_normal_screenshots_about_a_game_that/

Well, he can't revoke from steam store buyers, so he just removed access to files, removed all depots and added new empty depots (depots are what actually contain files), maybe to make it as hard as possible to restore access.

They show the date when you logged online and they were added—assuming they can unlock from offline mode (many games just never unlock them without internet connection). This is why achievement tracking is actually never always foolproof and why sites like astats never really work as intended if the player tends to use offline mode.

Yet when an op with a subject calling him scumbag and other people calling this guy all sorts of names (blatant scammer and asshole just below here, to someone that isn't even here to defend himself) are okay?

Because on one hand you can't say bad things about him, yet on the other you can.

Verbal abuse is allowed to a degree, but "calling out" is not. "Scumbag (in an subject title!)" "Asshole" "Blatant scammer" that's a mighty high degree then (and basically with that you're saying it's allowed to say it, since noone got warned for that).

Any other similar thread with such insults without a "warning message about a scam" would have been long closed.

Also while you made everyone remove their links, op still clearly shows links, that shows the profile of said person, it's easy to go from there to find his steamgifts profile. yet why isn't that calling out?

And you guys just brush it off "because it happened on a steam profile and not here", it's a bastion among staff.
Almost tempting to post that link to show i wasn't the one in the wrong, regardless i would get suspended for it.

Most will know by now, as i said, it's a bastion on support level and everyone is just covering eachother, the ticket was just passed around from one to the other and as i said because it happened on a steam profile instead of here it was all fine to staff, just like you are covering eachother with Khalaq now.

Even another staff member here having said in his own thread, as a "joke" (only said later) for people to go f themselves, but since it's staff and "a joke" it was all okay.

I wanted that support member in my situation, to have a cool down of 2 days suspension, i had the text up for 2 days, but since some support tickets are laid aside for years (on purpose) i didn't want that actual shit that support member posted on my profile any longer, because it was so vile and that in a time around christmas.

Yep, it's a career-killing move for sure. The gaming community can be fiercely loyal, but it also holds a grudge like nobody's business. It has a long memory. I'll never have anything to do with this dev's games, promotions, campaigns, or otherwise. I'm sure others feel the same, so yeah, he's done.

It would seriously hurt me on the inside if I was one that provided such assets via the asset store, just to constantly see my work getting dragged through the mud over and over again. Money and all that aside, you gotta have some pride ;x.

Items: [106047, Oath of Genesis]

But I don't get from your other comment, why that should be a beta key.

And it doesn't change the fact, that the dev is a fraudulent moron.

Ok, so 3 of the 4 availiable packages for that game are beta keys then.?

That makes it even worse.
Assuming Carlmundo tells the truth and no reason to not do that he got these keys as ?payment? or reward for some work. Depending on what they agreed before, thats just plain theft.
Really thrilled for his statement.

PS: I think WGN had 2 batches. One a while ago for voting.? and one for IdleArmy. The "got it for work" is most likely only true for the later patch.

Yes, the keys were a form of payment. We never offered keys for votes (and haven't done that in a LONG time). Keval promised that on this forum.

Btw: If a beta gets disabled, doesn't it just vanish?

Only the "problem with payment" gives an account alert, as far as my experience shows.

So he didn't disabled the beta, he revoked the keys. Big difference.

I bought this game on Steam store, what do you want to know?

] licenses_for_app 473900
License packageID 105201:
 - State : Active( flags 512 ) - Purchased : Wed May 18 16:37:02 2016 in "US", Credit Card
 - Apps : 473900, (1 in total)
 - Depots : (0 in total)

And what do you mean by "sharing" a store package key?

I might have it somewhere.

Funnily, Family share doesn't revoke (until next reconnect, I assume), so since dev restored depots I'm back to having access. :D

because one party might say one thing the other something else

Well, if one party is a trustworthy guy that has proven reliability once in a while and the othe rparty ist some moron (judginf from his posts) an removes the depots of his game once in a year and bans people for criticism.
Then... No, I don't relly need a screen.

It's like a (200/0) and a (5/20) rep person argue about who scammed who and noone made screens.

The game depots are removed like over 10 days ago but it's not until now that I noticed it.

The best you can do for now if you own the game is to submit a Steam Support ticket describing the situation about the removing game depots issue and hopefully someone from Valve would review this. I already did this but it shall take a while to get a response.

Interesting. He practically admits fraud and breaching every known consumer and commercial law. Of course he lives in a country where he will never be sued for that (since they would pretty much have to jail the entire population if they really prosecuted fraud and misleading business behaviour), but funny to see what some people think they can do in international dealings.

Afaik you are completely wrong. By agreeing to steam terms of service you acknowledge that you are not buying games to own indefinitely, rather "renting" licenses that can be revoked at valve's (and probably developers) discretion.

Crossposted from the steam community forums here because the "developer" will surely delete it in due time.

Some people wanted help on how to contact steam support about this, here is help on that:

[HELP] Game removed - How to contact steam support

The developer removed this game fradulently from many accounts today.
If you are affected, please read below and contact steam support.

Here is a step by step guide how to properly report this issue to steam support & a template to paste into the text field:

  • go to the support site: https://help.steampowered.com/en/
  • Select games and paste " Oath of Genesis " into the searchfield
  • select the game in the next step, it will list that the game has been in your libary and that the key was revoked.
  • select "It's not in my library" ( not "trouble with key" or "key revoked", steam does not let you create a ticket with these)
  • select "Contact Steam Support" and fill out the textfield.

Here is a template that you can adapt to your wishes to paste in:

I got the key for this "game" from a giveaway last year. The giveaway was sponsored directly by the "developer" of this "game" and he provided the keys for it.

The "developer" has a history of misconduct on steam and the whole "game" was nothing but an asset flip and a scam. It was removed from steam.

Now today, this shady "developer" has taken steps to erase all traces of his "game" and his former misconduct on steam. He has removed all retail keys that he could remove, legitimatly given out or not. My key included.

This is theft. This can not happen on steam.

I want the actions of this shady "developer" undone and my key and the "game" restored to my steam libary.

Note that the "developer" is also banning people and deleting threads in the "game´s" community hub to hide the facts and what is happening.

I hope that helps you guys, now go and make a ticket.

Your CD Key for this game has been revoked by the game publisher. This can happen when a batch of keys are stolen, or perhaps the key was for a beta game that has shipped and you'll need to purchase it.
You should contact whoever sold you the key for further assistance.

No, that's ridiculous.

He should just be hanged by his balls, covered with honey and open a beehive near him.

Neglecting the whole asset flipping part though and it's still a rotten move, doesn't matter if it's free or not.

He complains about Carlmundo selling his keys somewhere else, but as I know it's a common practice for those "game promoters", they taking 50% of keys for promotion in Greenlight and 50% for reselling, for example. And dev preferred to revoke 50% of our keys and 50% of the rest later.

I believe it's about some of the people that got a key from him sold them, not Carlmundo himself.

It's about the principle.
I paid for my key. Not much, but anyways, I paid.
Revoking it unjustified is just scamming.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It seems the keys were given for free and not authorized to be sold. So your issue should be with whomever you bought it from. Why not ask for a refund from were you bought the game?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I "bought" it from Carlmundos idlearmy. So basically paid for it with my time and cards (on average thats ~0.5$).

But it mostly depends on what Carlmundo and the Dev agreed on.

PS: After the statement thread from the Dev it just seems he's a kid/teen that got pissed, that some people sell keys on G2A and totally overreacted. He claimed it's all Carl keys, but Carl mentioned the game being sold before he even got his keys.
I guess it's just as always. Some people got their free key (for vote) and later from Carl and just sold it.

See above +
Well I always get pissed, when a game gets removed. Not gonna lie, wasn't more than a +1 for me either
But if it's somewhat justified (all [leaked] keys from a mass GA / a key from G2Shit (not buing there, but got some keys from trader, I was (after revokation) informed about the origin), I either write it of (GA) or get my money back/replacement key.

This case is a bit special, because idling a game for someone is basically free, but you pay with your time. Or with the cards from the game, depending on your viewpoint.
Additionaly the Dev seems a bit ... unexperience and it just pisses me of, if people do not think before they do irreversible actions. And if it were something novel like DLC-Quest or so I could understand the Dev... but this Assetflip and the History of banning people / removing depots just leaves a really bitter taste. Despite being a teen this Dev needs to learn some manners and buisness behaivior.
