I almost took that game serious after 2 friends told me extensively about the first one but then I saw a GIF of the sophisticated water drying mechanic on her ass. I wish Japanese games would cut that crap (Ninja Gaiden: Sigma Editions) so I could take them seriously because I don't think they are necessarily bad games.

When it comes to Japanese games, It's best to just ignore that kind of stuff. Whether a game is fun or not is all that matters in the end. At least that's my take on it.
That said, I didn't really care for what I played of the original Nier. Music was good, and the story (up to where I played) was fine, but the gameplay was very bland. The new one however looks much more fun to play.

If you like old 2D JRPGs, it is. It is a pretty good game with great characters. The story is pretty non-conventional even for that genre.
It has one big issue though: once you visit all seven world shells, the story forces you to visit each again, but this time each will feature one incredibly huge maze dungeon full of switch-hunting. This means that the plot screeches to a halt, and seeing the last third of the story takes up over half of the actual play time.

One the other hand the worst female protagonist I can remember is Gina from the Runaway games. The games are not bad but Gina starts out as a mix of rather negative female stereotypes although it improves slightly in the sequels.

Samus is probably the postergirl for strong female lead.
Elizabeth is a good character in Bioshock Infinite.
A lot of strong JRPG characters like Lightning, Tifa, NepNeps and finally my winner, Sabre from Fate series.

I'll leave stuff like Mass Effect and Skyrim where you have custom protagonists out of my list but great games nonetheless.
- Transistor - Red manages to be rather captivating even without uttering a single word
- Recettear - Recette is adorable but she's not very deep as a character, however the game is immensely fun
- Child of Light - Again, Aurora is adorable but not especially deep. Very nice game though.
- Contrast - Dawn and Didi are great and the game rather enjoyable

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the Dreamfall series? There are 3 games (The Longest Journey, Dreamfall and Dreamfall: Chapters), the main characters are different during the first and the last 2 games but they meet each other and are deeply connected :)
