Laughing (and humor, in general) is a protective response to what is supposed to be a perceived threat. Basically, you "laugh it off" to show that you don't really feel threatened. This kind of reaction is a common response among young people to stressful or anxious situations, less so among older adults. Apparently, you're girlfriend doesn't understand that your reaction is a defensive one to having someone scream in your face.

Here are a few ways you might deal with this situation.

• You can learn not to feel so stressed or anxious when she's yelling at you (by understanding she is just venting).
• Your girl can learn not to get so worked up when she's talking to you. (Yelling is usually done out of frustration.)
• Work together on a plan of action (for you) when she starts doing this, such as a code-phrase. ("You don't have to yell, I'm listening.")
• Come to an understanding that you two don't communicate well and go your separate ways.

Have your argument through texts and use appropriate emoticons.

This same thing happens to me. When she gets mad and hits me; I somehow think it's funny; and she hits me more. Now my mom hates me :(

Same happens to me. Just explain her that's something you do that when nervous and you can't help it. It took some time for my wife to get used to it

Apparently, Indians do this (as a cultural thing). They often smile out of embarrassment when being confronted in situations like that.

Ah, reminds me of every single time when I was little and pissed off mom, she was really angry and I'd smile, then she'd belt me and I'd laugh, which would piss her off even more. Good times.

I called my gf by my ex's name.

When I realised what I'd done I just laughed in her face. Was too funny. She didn't see the humour.
