You didn't need to dump them on a spare account either.
Email the gift to an e-mail address you have access to (make a spare gmail / mailinator / yahoo webmail accont for this*) => open the email, find the 'redeem game' link => copy that => drop the link into whatever gaming forums / chat / etc. you use. First person who clicks it and logs in through steam gets the game (unless they own it).
Repeat until you've got none left.
Note: if someone who owned the game clicked the link first, it would 'bounce' and wouldn't clear from your inventory and you would need to re-send it.
That is all irrelevant now though, just stick em on the market.
*I recommend a 'spare' email simply because the e-mail is visible in the gift link and so someone who you might not want knowing your email could find it out.

Interesting idea, actually sounds like it's more work than dumping them into a spare account, though. Of course they wouldn't land in a digital orcus and maybe even get played that way.
However, it's not important anymore because I already sold all my copies and I'm rich now: Dosh!

Why people say things when they have absolutely no clue whether it's true or not is beyond me. I bet you think you can verify whether a key has been used or not by whether it says "Duplicate" or "Product Already Owned".
