I like to dedicate October to catching up on some of the horror movies and creepy-themed games I've been missing out on during the year, so I'd love to get some quality suggestions about the best Halloweeny games to play this month.

I'm looking to play any fantastic games with a creepy/spooky vibe, which doesn't necessarily have to mean scary - see the Dead Rising games (which are fun zombie blasting actions), or Darkest Dungeon (which is more of a Tactical RPG / Stress-Management-Simulator), or even The Secret World (for a creepy-themed MMO). I usually don't enjoy games that focus on jumpscares for Youtubers, ala anything with Freddy in the title, but if you know of something amazing, you're totally welcome to share those too!

So, given how Steam's recommendation feature is still a little bit lacking, anyone have some quality recommendations for gaming in the scary season?

SOMA and Alien: Isolation are the two best horror games I've played in recent years. The Evil Within was also very good

This is a reverse recommendation but avoid "The night of the living dead" film. It's a classic yes. But the ending and most of the stuff they do is so nonsensical... The film was good for its time I am sure but it is just a waste of time in the end...

There is a castlevania Netflix series btw. It was really good. Short but good. Season 2 is being made already. I recommend that!
edit Ops. Thought you wanted recommendations for games, and movies. But now I see it's just games. Haha. Resident Evil I think has a very creepy atmosphere. There also was a flash sale on 4 and 5 HD versions if you got those.

If you're looking for something pretty laidback and fun, definitely go with Costume Quest. I finished the first one a month or two ago and recently started the sequel and I cannot recommend them enough. Super enjoyable time.

If you're looking for proper horror games on the other hand, I'd like to recommend the Penumbra series. I believe they're made by the same people who made Amnesia and I may or may not have been too scared to finish them... >_>
Also pretty creepy is Kholat. If you're bad with a map and compass, you may end up more frustrated than scared, but I found it to be very satisfyingly unsettling. Still playing through that one, so I can't say if that holds up through the entire game or not, but so far so good imo.

Kholat was one of my wins here which has two awesome elements - horror and Sean Bean :D
You are right, it WAS unsettling and creepy, which I loved. Some scenes are immensely eerie. I've beaten it. It's not long at all; you can do it! :)

Kholat was one of my wins here as well! :D Good to hear it's not too long. I started it a while back and then set it aside partially because I thought a few of my other wins would take less time but also because I'm waiting for the chance to have the house to myself for a good chunk of time. It's far too much fun to play when I'm home alone; it's like the creepy factor instantly goes up a ton.
Thank you for the encouragement! I'll definitely have to get back to it soon :)

High five for a fan of horror who willingly makes it creepier and harder on herself by darkening the room, waiting on everyone to leave the house, playing at night, etc, same as I do xD I too willingly raise the creepy factor games have :P playing with headphones on also helps.

Dead Space is actually perfect for the creepy vibe. Loved those, might have to replay again, aha.

First time playing Dead Space gave me an awesome familiar feeling stemming from Doom 3.

Really? I got Doom 3 when it came out (Win Vista IIRC) and was bored after 2-3 hours. It was always the same thing. Dark room, open or grab something, enemies appear, shoot, then move on to the next thing. The torch mechanic was contrived and I just used Godmode to finish the rest to see the end of the "story".
Dead Space was seriously scary and didn't rely on cheap mechanics.

True, Dead Space is indeed scarrier. I don't know, I really enjoyed Doom 3. Might be that I wouldn't now. Did you play the BFG edition or the regular one? The reason I'm asking is that the BFG ed gives you the ability to have the flashlight on your shotgun, while in the regular version you had to switch weapons with a flashlight in order to see anything.

I played the original when it was first released. The torch mechanic was so contrived after a while it felt more like a tech demo for their new engine. I've though about the BFG edition but to be honest I can't really be bothered to play through it again. The only reason would be the add-ons that came out later, now called DLCs ;)

Haha, I understand your point. I remember I started replaying it on Nightmare(?) right after I finished it :) the higher difficulty made it even more fun... back then, at least.

The Evil Within surprised me very much. It gave me a heavy Silent Hill vibe, but it also has RPG elements. Layers of Fear is amazingly creepy and has some nice scares (and this is coming from a guy who also hates jumpscares, deeming them cheap tricks)

Edit: Oooooo ooo ooooo Darkwood! A game I really really want. Check if there's still an ongoing sale, but I think it was two days only. I almost bought it, but I reminded myself how many games are still waiting in the backlog xD

Just making sure. It wouldn't be the first time where I've looked up one game only to get results for another game.

Fran Bow's one of my favourite horror games. It's all about the protagonist learning that death isn't so scary and that she can stand up for herself. Delightful artstyle for the graphics, too.

Sir, You Are Being Hunted is a pretty cool concept for a stealth game. It has some innovative ideas that makes it pretty unique. However, in my opinion, it has a lot of unused potential and the stealth system + AI is flawed, and since the stealth system is such a big part of the game, I quickly lost interest in the game. Also, the loot was pretty lackluster. I'd give the developers an A for effort, but they could've spent more time making it a more polished game.

Couple other people already recommended them (I think lol), but SOMA is prolly my favorite game period. Very creepy atmosphere, story, and enemies. In my opinion, they did a pretty good job of building a solid sense of dread, instead of trying to scare people with jump scares.

Other recommendation I got is Little Nightmares of your into platformers. Again, creepy atmosphere, couple white-knuckle moments, on top of a solid platformer.

Oh and then the original Outlast. Gets intense in spots, and there's a couple jump scares, but I felt they did a good job scaring me shitless with everything else.

And one more for RE7. I just finished getting most of the achieves from it, so I might be a bit biased lol but I thought it was pretty good. Second/third time playing it and it still spooked me in spots.

edit: Im a liar xD One more. You might like Dying Light if you're into zombie games. Similar to Dead Island, but way more polished and has parkour (might be spelling that wrong). It has co-op too if you're into it.
