So this morning, I was talking to my mom when she said that she thinks he has herpes. Apparently the type she has is called Shingles? She told me there are 2 types of herpes, STDs and Non-STDs, and she said she got hers from having the chicken poX. Anyways, she said she had chicken pox back in 1979, so I don't know why all of the sudden now she's getting herpes instead of back when she had it. Is the kind of herpes she has contagious? Like, should I just act as if she doesn't have it, or should I avoid her like the plague?

Um, if you haven't gotten it by now when she was changing your crappy diapers all those years, you're probably not gonna get it now. Oh and do some research dude!

Is this a serious question?

If yes, herpes ZOSTER can occur to everyone who has had measles. Herpes SIMPLEX is the STD.

Don't avoid your mom, be supportive since herpes zoster is very painful, and the pain can persist even after the rash is gone.

1) Chickenpox, not measles. It's the varicella zoster virus, part of the Herpesviridae family.
Measles is caused by a paramyxovirus - different thing altogether.

2) As I said below, herpes is not always an STD. There are multiple transmission vectors.

3) Totaly agree on the last part.

herpes simplex is not an STD, they are cold sores.

Herpes Complex is the thing you get on your genitals and is an STD.

Comment has been collapsed.

There is no such things as "herpes complex". Both cold sores and genital herpes are caused by the herpes simplex virus (traditionally, HSV1 for cold sores and HSV2 for genital herpes - however, it's not uncommon anymore to see the opposite).

Do not try to mate with her just to be safe. If you truly can't resist then I would recommend using a bleach based lubricant.

You do know you could have simply googled it, right?

But to put it simply: there is no connection between shingles (caused by the varicella zoster virus, same one that causes chickenpox) and herpes (caused by the herpes simplex virus), other than the fact that the two viruses are part of the same family.

So no, you're not in any danger (especially if you've already had chickenpox). And don't be a d*ck and avoid your mother - as someone already said, shingles can be painful, so do your best to be supportive.

If you need more details, you can find them on CDC's website

And to address a previous comment, herpes simplex is not necessary an STD - there are multiple transmission vectors. But that's another topic altogether.

Thank you, I guess :) I am technically an MD, although (as a disclaimer) I never practiced.

So, back to the original poster, take everything I've said (and in general everything said on an Internet forum) with the required grain of salt :)

I have herpes simplex (cold sores). I got it from my mother as a child. It is incurable, but outbreaks are not that common and can be treated. I haven't had an outbreak for many years. Everyone else in my family managed to avoid getting it. I've never passed it to my wife or children either.
If you are referring to your mom having herpes simplex. It's no big deal. Don't kiss her when she has cold sores or touch somthing she recently touched if she is oozing puss all over from her lips... which I don't think is much of a problem anymore like back in the 1970s when I got it, as there are antiviral creams you can use now.

What makes you think that? For all you know she could have been 1, 11, or 21 when she got it.

My guess is that we're roughly the same age, based on the fact that most folks in that era had their first bout of pox in the early years of their life (2-10 years). It was a casual observation. I don't think your mother's age is an indictment on her or you. Lol.

u need to educate yourself and realise that the type of herpes she is talking about is extemely common and over half the world has it already and it isnt anything to do with sexual contact at all. also google is quicker and more helpfull than forums like this

Yeah, shingles is real and ultra-painful. If you have had chicken pox in your life, then you technically have shingles already. You're just kind of waiting for it to flare back up again.

Just check it out on wikipedia/google/anywhere but SG really. And, at the very least, be nice to your mom, yo.

I guess. You're more likely to get shingles later if you haven't had da pox early.

But they're doing their best to inoculate us here for varicella. Of course, long-term efficacy is completely unknown. Love them drug company lobbyists!!

Oh, damn you're right! That's actually a really cool username for an editor! Unfortunately, the real reason is nowhere near as meta. I actually use it because as a philosophy major I used to giggle about the (what I consider to be) contradictions found on similar signs when I was getting high instead of going to class.

Which doesn't truly explain why I've adopted it, but it should illustrate some sort of connection there. Hopefully.

"Like, should I just act as if she doesn't have it, or should I avoid her like the plague?"
I think contact with lesions should be avoided when they're visible, otherwise most of the time there's not much risk.

"so I don't know why all of the sudden now she's getting herpes instead of back when she had it"
It's cyclic, it can show up at any time and the rest of the time, just be present as latent but invisible and almost not contagious.

But...that's as far as my knowledge of this virus goes. And I don't know anything about that Shingles you're mentioning.

Fun fact : technically, Viruses aren't considered alive beings, they're some kind of "zombie" beings.

For the record, all of this other information is moot anyway.

You should always support and take care of your mother. You should never "avoid her like the plague". In most cases, your mother will have sacrificed far more than you'll ever realize for you. Try and return the favor a least a little.
