Just to clear things up first: I'm not being a douche I just sent the game to the wrong person.

I gave a gift on Steam and the person hasn't been online yet to accept it, if I return it to my inventory will they know I've sent the game and cancelled? They had a really similar name to my friend and well I was half asleep.

|| UPDATE ||

Thanks guys! I learnt some stuff today!

Conclusion: I thought bugger it and just bought another copy for my friend since its discounted anyway! Happy holidays everybody!

they will know for sure if you sent it via email.
i don't know if steam notifies them if you sent it to a friend, then canceled.

if you have another gift you could try that with a friend you trust. ask him to go offline, send the gift, cancel, then tell him to go online again?

It was a simple mistake, and if they can't understand that, then I'd say they're the douche, not you.

I can't answer your question, however.

Yeah true but being the christmas period I feel a little awkward knowing they could possibly be like "oh. " since he wasn't exactly a random acquaintance. Meh, probably overthinking it.

If it's someone you already know well, just send them a quick message about what happened just to be sure.

If they're not a random acquaintance, maybe send them something else when you notify them about the mistake?

I think they would get a notification email (along with the email address associated with your Steam account) too even if you sent the gift on Steam.

Come to think of it I never got an email when my friend gifted me for our "secret santa" thing.

Here's what it says when I try to send a gift:

Send my gift directly through Steam
Send my friend a gift message directly to their Steam account.
Note: This option also sends an email message, to be sure your friend sees your gift as soon as possible. For security purposes, your friend will be shown the email address associated with your account.

I'd cancel it, and if you want to, tell him what happened.
