Hello guys, I've been away for a while and I wasn't so active in the trading section of the site.

One thing that I noticed is how much the prices have fallen, gift copies of Steam games too.

e.g. The Witcher 2 for 1 TF2 key, The Orange Box for not even 2 Keys, I mean for real?

What happened, those two games weren't bundled as far as I know.

All I see is long time traders asking games for very low prices, is there people willing to trade?

Thanks for your time! =)

EDIT

Here's a screenshot of some prices that a reputable trader is asking for the games, all in gift-form.

Not really....

I just wrote a response and it got deleted when I clicked on submit comment ??
Okay, rewriting it:
Maybe not bundled (in which case it'd probably be worth even less) but those two games have been in sales for huge % off over time, so it seems reasonable. Most games gradually decrease heavily in value as they become older.

Ever since the trading restrictions, prices are all over the place. Gem prices gone up almost 50%, whereas people dealing in games are finding it more difficult to trade their stuff, especially for CS keys. Plus the grey market is still strong, so they finally have to compete with those prices, putting their items near their real values instead of what they think those things are worth.

It's just one aspect of it though. But the market restrictions really stirred up the entire scene.

I know, I used to be very active 2 years ago, good thing I stopped just before the market restrictions were implemented.

Well, witcher 2 has been 85% off for a while now (dunno about the orange box since it doesn't interest me and I'm not an active trader).

True, but at 3€ price on sale a TF2 isn't even enough to break even.

What gives?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I'm not sure how much a TF2 key costs (again, not into trading) but there are still ROW regions with cheaper prices (ex: it's 2.15€ in NZ)

Might be coming out of South Africa, not sure if they're region locked there or not.

If they're not then selling a key will net about $2.22 after Steam take their cut and the game is currently $2.10. Tiny profit, but still viable.

Might be coming from elsewhere, not sure where is and isn't region locked - https://steamdb.info/app/20920/

South Africa is for sure region locked. I can't gift something to someone in a differed region if I buy a game on the steam store. A fair deal cheaper though.

Thanks, and in that case I don't know where they're coming from! Cheapest region I know that isn't locked on the list is New Zealand that bludshade mentioned at $2.43, but that would lead to loss when selling the key.

A good number of people risk the fake store region and buy from the Kiwis, or maybe from Japan or Norway; depending on game, those three have 15-20% cheaper prices than US and have fully unrestricted ROW gifts.

Finland isn't cheaper than US.

You probably meant Norway our beloved neighbor :P

I've been able to get The Witcher 2 for a key (or less) for quite a while.
The game is available for $1.65 in Poland and The Orange Box has been available for $3.50

That's approximately 1 key, and 2 keys

I cannot tell for Orange Box but as for Witcher 2 - you gotta remember that not only steam creates value of an item. Sure - gift copy is a gift copy, but if there's a legit key available valued less than 50% of the gift copy you cannot expect gift price to remain unchanged. After all if people having gift copies don't change their prices noone will buy from them if people can buy key for half the price. Witcher 2 is currently available in dev's own store for 6.5PLN = 1.65USD which is more or less exactly 1 key. Not to mention it's not even the biggest discount for this game we've seen ;)

Does GOG has an effect on the prices of steam keys?
If that was the case then Witcher 2 should be even cheaper since I remember it being free at one point, but only as a GOG key.

Dont think so, Steam-copies have more value

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, that's what I suspect.
Prices must be low because of ROW countries with cheaper prices, at least for Witcher 2. As for the Orange Box, I'm not 100 % sure about the exact price but I remember GMG having it a very deep discount a couple of times.

since the market restrictions, there are very few regions with un-locked gift copies of games

Game bundle sites like humblebundle had a significant impact on people's willingness to purchase Steam Gifts because they know that game will be available for a very better price in future not too far away.

I could see a buyer (who wants to buy the game) asking for low prices, not the seller...

Steam Gifts Sellers have to lower their prices for their games when other traders have better offers for THOSE games in CD-KEY format which mostly comes from humble bundle or other bundle sites.

When I was active in trading (before the market restrictions) gift-copies would sell for their actual price, if not a bit more (compared to the cd-keys).

Times change I guess.

I don't know how much but i'm sure both third party sellers and game bundle websites had serious impact on Steam Store sales.

Trade prices too low?

Saw it at first glance ... thats some guy buying the games for cheap to re-sell them.
Classic buy low sell high. Btw. Witcher 2 got sold cheaper than 1.5€ ... its constantly below 2€ on g2a.
What i noticed > buying is good goes well, "selling" not really here - but that also depends.

Those prices are very common all around the trading forum.

If he (and many other traders) is asking to buy that low, what's the point to try and make a profit of 0.10-0.50$ per games?

Check the price for the game he's buying on g2a for a few different games and you know, its not 0.50$ profit.

But most (if not all) are asking for gift-copies of games.

not really ... they'd sure would buy those as gifts if someone were to offer (or its just the game thats cheap as gift)
but they will accept gift links to steam games, unless clearly stated

those that I checked (and made me curious) were the ones that were asking for gift-copies at low price. Even gift-copies of games that were bundled before.

the one in your screenshot isn't and those who try to acquire games that were never
sold at a low price, (bundled or gift) are simply very unlikely to ever get those trades :D

The one in my pic is stating that he only trades for gift-copies.

He and many others have more than 300+ rep, some even 700-800.

no, and i don't know about everyone, but its what i said - if a game
was sold cheap chances are you get it + there is no direct link/correlation
to lots of rep + having bought the games at prices you're asking for ...

All games must be ROW and redeemable on STEAM.
Most of the times, I can buy multiple copies.

Preferably, send me trade offers.

GOG version is/was free on IGN Prime, that's why there's tons of GOG copies from Russian exploiters.

Permalink

i don't think that is to blame, the gog version sells for more than the steam one,
witcher 2 has to many sellers + enough of sources for cheap supply + enough steam sales

The screenshot you posted is someone's wishlist section - they are buying for those prices, not selling them. Every single one of those prices is below market value (and some are significantly below value). If you have some of the games on that person's wishlist you could definitely get more keys if you sold them to a different trader

Cant never take what someones interpretation of a game price for granted tbh .

Ive seen Popular stuff go for less then a key , and then Reputable traders arguing that the game is worth 2/3 keys ... sometimes even more .
Some even said they would go and buy 100 copies for that price ... after reffering them to the topic in question ... trades got closed 99% of times :)
OR comments just get deleted .
I dont want to ruin ppl business , so i delete my comment aswell obviously >.>

So even someone with 1k rep , can have inaccurate pricing ... Like the reasonable ppl put the stuff for what they got it + alittle extra as a profit for the hassle of reselling it .

Must not forget that there are also Price glitches on steam , which can cause some drastic changes in pricing for a period of time :)

Then there are ppl who sell Shantae , and Fault milestone One for 3 keys each >.>

And lastly , as for the Long time traders buying stuff for Extremely low price ... there are ... and thats why they are Long time traders
They buy stuff for cheap and re-sell it for profit ... sometimes double to what they paid for it :)
