I added a bunch of his stuff to my Netflix DVD queue and it looks like Spirited Away already shipped, but I was hoping maybe I could find some other directors or writers to check out.

Easy, first watch what Miyazaki has to offer. If you survive weirdness there we can speak of others. We don't wish to lose one more before you become one of us... one of us... :P
But if you insist try few things from Shinkai Makoto, maybe first Children Who Chase Lost Voices which reminds of Miyzaki, and then his other staff which is different type.
P.S. DO NOT WATCH IT ALL IN ONE GO!

thanks for the tips! i'm going to take my time and really try to get into this genre. i've been a film geek forever and it just doesn't make sense for me to ignore anime like i've done so far. i'm looking forward to seeing some of the classics.

No problem, glade that I was of any help.
A lot of people dismiss anime because its cartoon, but in reality great movie is a great movie regardless if its live action, drawn or CGI / 3D-model animated.
For the classics... uff.... That is kinda tricky, some "classics" are just overrated just because they were first titles who exit Japan. My advice is to find some people to recommend you titles based on your own taste, and after a while you can pick and choose on your own accord.

I like very much Ponyo On The Cliff, Totoro (great for watching with kids but very smart one too)
Nausicaa Valley Of The Wind, Howl's Moving Castle (one of my first anime thanks to which i like that genre), Afro Samurai
Cowboy Bepop series are considered as legendary too

Check out Satoshi Kon's (RIP) movies: Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, Millenium Actress,...
If you want more action-y stuff, there's always the classics, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in The Shell

I found Akira to be completely over rated. I didn't like it. So mane people told me to watch it and after I did I was disappointed with it.

Just look for anything made by Studio Ghibli, they made Spirited Away and The Wind Rises.
Here's a page of great anime films.

I watched Kaze Tachinu last week too by chance, and since I also liked it a lot, here's a few other films I've seen in the past that were kinda in the same vein: Makoto Shinkai his works, especially 5 cm per second, Beyond the Clouds and The Garden of Words; Colorful, The girl who leapt through time and Wolf Children: Ame no Yuki. Obviously you have Miyazaki his other works too, but that goes without saying. One recommendation I would personally make it to watch all of them subbed, call it a personal preference, but I think the original version is best seen in almost all cases. Other than that, I think the AnoHana TVseries may have gotten a movie that shows the story from a different perspective and should still be a good watch without having seen the series, so if that's the case you may want to look into that one too.

Definitely was a great movie, I saw it subbed as well. I read that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and a bunch of other talented actors did the dubbed version but I really have a hard time watching any movie in any language other than the original. I find myself even watching English films with subtitles a lot of the time, just so I don't miss anything that might be in the background or muffled.
Thanks for the recommendations. I'm really looking forward to checking everyone's suggestions out.

I've never been into anime but when I saw this film it really stuck with me. It was just a random matinee showing that I caught one day when I had nothing else to do. It left me hungry for some other great anime films. Could some of you please suggest some films I might like based on the fact that the only anime film I've ever seen (and loved) is The Wind Rises (Kaze tachinu)? Seriously the only other anime stuff I've ever seen was Dragonball Z years ago because my friend was into it, but I never liked that kind of anime.
