I see alot of threads over on steam trades about people swaping games for tf2 keys?

I would like to be enlightened on why people would swap proper games for "items"?

The keys are used on boxes which can give rare items. It's gambling, and people love gambling.

I highly doubt that. I was a hundred hours into the game and I still didn't understand jack shit about crafting and unusuals. I had to look everything up on certain wiki sites so that I'd understand it.

TF2 economy is huge, so trading games for keys ends up being profitable. I dont even play TF2 anymore, but I keep using keys for trades.

To understand the game you need more time than that, and to understand trades you might need a lifetime. I'm a trader and still dont get it lol

I do this I traded some games for tf2 keys and all people I gave keys only accept them because its safer than paypal.
No one use them or play tf2.
they simply use it again for trading or sell them on the market, so its like virtual money.^^

To most people, it's just another currency used for trading.

They're popular as you can trade them using the Steam client as opposed to sending money through PayPal.

1 decade ago

But if you buy them from steam then they lose value once you want to trade them... so are all games traded on steam sale price bases?

1 decade ago
Permalink

you can buy them for 1,35$ outside of steam then its fine
and yes mostly trades are based uppon sale prices

They are a good currency as you can either use them or sell them for steam wallet.

I really dont know much about tf2, so could you tell me why would some pay 100s for something?
:)

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

no because i never would pay such an amount for stupid items, but i have seen some purple color items which were sold for 150$ and more.

If you are lucky you can get some of those items from crates which you can open with keys.
type tf2shop in google and you will see some of the prices there.

its insane.^^

But I like to get tf2keys for trading because you can get games quiet cheap.

Having something exquisite and rare and expensive. Most likely not from a box, more likely something from many years ago no longer available. It's the same in real life, you know, there are collectors for everything.

1 decade ago

you have a chance to get purple items from crates, basically a hat with particle effects and they're rare. Prices can range from 30$ to 500$+

I cant remember the last time I bought something on the steam store with money straight up. I just buy TF2 keys for quite cheap and trade them for games and get them much cheaper.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Look, just get some tf2 keys for your tradeable games... Then, trade some tf2 keys with trader in other regions (like russia) where the games are cheaper... You could get blood bowl chaos edition (that is 10$ on sale) for 3 tf2 keys.. the equivalent of a 5-6$ of your game on sale.

Profit.

1 tf2 key = $1.35 USD

They sell quickly on market for 1.88 steam wallet... (before valve costs)

you can trade with people who can buy games cheaply for cheap, and they can make money on steam-market. It's a nice system.

$1199.99 -- Unusual Ol' Snaggletooth
It's A Secret To Everybody
$849.99 -- A Carefully Wrapped Gift (Hat of Undeniable Wealth And Respect)
$524.99 - price for some items are insane o.O even stupid Vintage Fan O'War starts from $142.49

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Those prices are a bit high, but yeah, still ridiculous.

Vintage Fan O'War - $65-$85
Hat of Undeniable Wealth And Respect - $360-$400
Unusual Ol' Snaggletooth It's A Secret To Everybody - $360-$415
Unusual El Jefe Cloudy Moon - $725-$860

Another thing that doesn't help is that there are essentially two prices for keys. $1.30ish if you pay with PayPal or $2.00-$2.50 if you use Steam Wallet so prices will vary depending on where you look and who you ask.

1 decade ago
Permalink

my prices are from tf2shop.net, maybe they got higher prices, anyway as you say still ridiculous

1 decade ago

tf2shop.net has severely inflated prices. You can easily get things much cheaper than that if you search through TF2Outpost and sites like that.

You have to understand that TF2 has its own (crumbling) economy based around metal and keys.

Metal can be gained while keys have to be bought with cash (thus why they have inherit value).
Keys open crates that may or may not have a really good item in it (that you can further sell).

Unbox something really good and trade it for more keys > trade keys for games = Profit.
Some people don't even play the game anymore, they just trade and make money/games of it, depends how much time you're willing to invest.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So, can crates and keys be had in-game just from playing, or does one have to buy keys? And these items people are buying... are these also things that players can earn just from playing? Can they be lost or taken away, too? The OP is right, it's all a bit baffling.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Everything can be (or were previously) earned from playing in-game EXCEPT: Keys, Genuine items, Strange/Festive items, Unusual hats. Genuine items only come from pre-ordering another game, Keys only come from buying them from the store, and Unusual hats are found by opening a crate with a key (they have ~1% chance of dropping from an opened crate). Strange and Festive items are also found inside crates using a key, but their chance to drop is much greater than unusual hats.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Wow, so there are crates in the game, but you've gotta pay for keys outside the game to open them and get stuff??? Holy crow, that's... awful. And people like this?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

its a bit like being in a bowling league, yeah you can use the balls and shoes there but if you enjoy the game your going to end up buying a ball and gloves and shoes and all the other stuff. none of it is necessary but ppl like feeling pretty, and in the end that is all that unusual items do, they make you look nicer. strange weapons do silly things like track how many times you killed someone with a headshot. this is something that the game itself tracks on the scoreboard(for you only), but now you can have it on your weapon and can show how many you've got cumulatively(not limited to current map and server) to other players.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There's no need to open the crates. They don't have a meaningful effect on gameplay.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You can earn keys just by selling refined metals.

2 weapons = 1 scrap

3 scrap = 1 reclaimed metal

3 reclaimed metal = 1 refined metal

3-4 ref = 1 tf2 key in trades

Some people do. And it's not really awful, because as others have said, none of the special items DO anything. They just look pretty. And some people enjoy dropping hundreds of dollars on a chance to get a sparkly hat.

Most people don't like it, and the vast majority of TF2 players and traders never ever open any crates. Only the gamblers do.

I think you missed a few items. Some paints are only buy or uncrate, and there are things like the ring. Also a few exceptions, like the Fosters Facade (not gen but gotten in the same way).

It's possible to invest in TF2conomy without involving real money. Make lots of farming accounts, then trade items you got for keys and more stuff.

not true because to be able to trade items you have to be premium member in Tf2.
To earn that you must have bought at least 1 item from ingame store ;-)
