He was amazing on Full Metal Jacket. I saw him a couple of times on The History Channel too.

He was a great character actor and an all-around nice guy. I met him once at a comic-con and he talked to everyone who approached him, and there were quite a few of us, with humility and kindness.
He will of course be remembered for his legendary performance in FMJ and other memorable badass parts but he was a full-range actor who brought something to every part he played, from the crooked mayor in Mississippi Burning to the grieving father in Dead Man Walking.
RIP Gunny, you deserve it.

That's very sad to hear. Besides FMJ I enjoyed watching the Lock n' Load military series.

And he really was a marine sergent too. Perfect for many parts.
