It's my 1st cake day :D

That fateful day when I found a game review mentioning this site 😂
Now I'm hooked. I was never hooked on Social media like Facebook,Twitter, or Reddit, but this one is just did it for me.
Reading discussions, trying to beat my wins, joining playing groups. I don't have much of that in any other social media group. I like how open-minded and nice many of the users are.

About myself
My real name is Alvin by the way. I got my name from the chipmunk Alvin since my mom thought it was cute 🤣. I've grown to like that name since most people find it easy to remember at least.

I'm the youngest of 2 brothers. If only I had one more brother then, we really would start a band together.
I read a lot of manga. I also play a lot of rpgs. I like survival simulations too.

I'm also really into health stuff. So I really watch what I eat. If you saw me at work, I would be chewing on a head of green cabbage for it's fiber, Vitamin C and other vitamins.

Fun Fact: I actually got my first Full-time job by putting a business strategy game in my resume. It was for a business class where we had to run a simulated company against 4 other universities. My nickname in the group was Chief Cabbage Officer (CCO) since I would also bring my cabbage to our team briefings. I was the numbers guy, so I would help predict what the other schools would do with their sales and pricing. Spreadsheets are amazing. I was able to get most of my referrals by referencing what I could do for them by making macros. Thanks to that our team took 1st place.

Here's a small giveaway.

Happy cake day!
And that was indeed a fun fact! Congrats on the 1st place, seems like you're quite creative. XD

To answer the question, I guess in a way gaming both opened and closed career paths for me, haha. I've always been a little too sure that I wanted to work with game art when I was younger, but some experiences with it almost made me gave up on art altogether. It took me a while to get back on my feet. It was kind of like having a core part of myself shatter. It's easy to get lost when something you were so sure of isn't... quite... it. So in that sense it made me close myself to a lot of things that I had planned (like a master's degree related to it abroad).
Recently I've been wanting to give it another shot from a different angle, but I guess we'll see.

Thanks for the giveaways btw, board games and adventure games are great. :)

Oooh thanks for sharing! >_< Art really isn't my forte and game art sounds really tough to get into. I hope your new angle works out for you :). Maybe you could help an indie developer on the side with their game art. I feel like the gaming industry is pretty rough. I just visited the company EA to do a Communications Workshop for them and they seemed really stressed out about work-life-balance 😬

Oooh, that must have been an interesting visit! Did you get to see a lot of the company?
How was the workshop like?

Art in general can definitely be an unforgiving field, it's a lot of long hours and takes a lot of resistance to frustration, between your own self-criticism and clients who tend to want things you don't want to do, or crazy deadlines. XD

The game industry is pretty cut throat at times for sure! Lots of crunches, you have to be really fast to make things work and not lose your sanity depending on which type of game art you're doing. My experience was mostly with doing assets (maps, tiles, objects, playing pieces, etc) and some small concepts for indie mobile games. The incessant deadlines were really killing me, but maybe I just picked the type of game art that wasn't as good for my sanity, haha. I still need to learn and practice a lot, so I'm not as fast as I needed to be.

I know a few artists who do splashes for games, some times the deadlines are around 1 month for one splash or card art (which is a great contrast from concept art, in which you're expected to create tons of designs a day), but it's still of back and forth with the art director, so even then it's less chill than it'd seem from the deadline.

Alas, some times not going down the beaten path can be the most fulfilling, specially when you can find a way to mix different passions into the same project. :)

And wah, sorry, didn't mean to babble that much :P

Haha no worries, it just shows how passionate you are ;)

I only saw their break room since that's where I did my presentation/workshop for them. It had a lot of chairs and tables for hanging out. I saw a couple of big Screen TVs with game consoles connected to them, but they were all off. Probably meant more for game testing.
I would have asked for a tour of the facility, but I felt like they had a ton of security and I didn't want to be a bothersome guest.

So, I'm actually the president of this public speaking club called "Toastmasters". And I got a call from EA, who wanted me to tell them all about Toastmasters so they could try to start a club at their own company. So I prepped the material I wanted to show them and discuss the club dues and study material. Honestly, I was pretty nervous since this was my first time doing this. I thought it would be fun to give them a sample of what our regular club meetings are like.

So normally we have prepared speeches (5-7 minutes on any topic) followed by impromptu speeches (1-2 minutes) and evaluation/feedback speeches (2-3 minutes). So I came up with some questions for the EA employees to answer in 1-2 minutes. I came up with questions relating to Halloween since it was October. For example, "what costume would you wear if money was no issue?" One employee came up and spoke about her wish to be Catwoman,

Then I would evaluate how I liked their speech and what they could improve on. I ended it there with 3 questions. Right after, I finally sat down to have lunch provided by EA and chatted with the EA representative that called me over. We just talked about her aspirations in the company since she barely got in herself. I think she was the liaison for the mobile app game division. Hope she's happy where she's at. She really seemed overworked.

See, I babble just as much so we're even ^^

Thanks for sharing so much on this cut-throat industry.
p.s. I hope my last 5 months of being president aren't as stressful :)

XD Yeah, I imagine the visit would become a lot more bureaucratic, there's a chance they'd say the full tour would have to have been scheduled in advance, and you'd certainly have to sign an NDA if you were to see more of the facilities.

The club sounds pretty interesting! Public speaking always made me tense back in college, but it's an important skill to have. xD
Googling the club.. it's a lot bigger than I imagined! I thought it was some sort of university club and now I'm both impressed and ashamed after seeing the magnitude of it! Hahah. I found out you guys even have branches here in Brazil.
How long have you been president?

Thank you as well for sharing! It was a pretty cool read. c: I hope the next 5 months go smoothly for you as well! Hahah.

No problem. Well I've been president for 7 months now. Just gotta carry the torch a little longer for my 1 year term and hope someone new runs. I just have to do what I can to make this job look fun and easy XD

Hope you're able to join yourself 😊
