Response from dev forum:

"As most of you know, our developer tools suggest pricing based on market research and purchasing power parity. In the case of territories such as Russia, Brazil, and SE Asia, we suggested pricing that is lower than the direct USD conversion. This is based on our assessment of actual pricing of comparable products in that market. Recently Rubles have hit an all-time low which has been a concern of many game developers. We are still assessing the market to see if suggesting new prices in Russia is right for customers who live in that market. We do not think that pricing based on currency conversion only is the right way to approach the Russian market necessarily.

What we are doing immediately in response to the Ruble drop is limiting trading and gifting from Russia to prevent people from taking advantage of the situation. We have been applying a gifting and trading lock of this type on all newly created packages on Steam since mid-2014. Today we have propped a change that will affect all packages on Steam which will not allow them to be unpacked to an account, if gifted or traded from a lower priced region to a higher priced region. This change is not retroactive and only affects new purchases. It also will not affect customers in that region from gifting a copy to other people in that same region. All customers will have proper warning when they are purchasing a gift prior to checkout in those regions as well. We will continue to assess the situation and make changes if necessary in the future. If you have any questions please feel free to write us via the contact form via the Steamworks Development site - Documentation & Help -> Contact Steam Publishing."

but in the regional loc has its +

1) stop begging the game by those who live in other regions

2) prices will not rise in CIS

Well, If I want to create a public giveaway, I buy a ROW key for the Steam game in the western online store!

Like i'd care if the game gets a higher price in RU / CIS ,Russians deserve it... also me and other people were not begging games from russians.. we were BUYING them.

1) CIS region (in the Steam store) includes the following(in addition to Russia): Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

I think they do not deserve the suffering caused by the policies of president Putin

2) You (like most normal users) buy the game, but there are some people who write requested to present the game and I'm glad that now I can get rid of them just say that I'm from Russia

Can i still get keys from Nuuvem? if so the only thing i lost was Kinguin, and i guess i´ll support indie devs less.

Some keys on Nuuvem are regionlocked.
they started the "this item is not available in your region" a few weeks back.
Not really sure, I hardly buy from that store

I made a purchase there two weeks ago (Shadow of Mordor for $19 my currency) and it worked fine. I also tried to buy The Evil Within ($16 my currency) but it said it's not available for purchase in my region. So a 50/50.

Not sure this helps about future purchases, but it seems to restrict you from buying keys that won't activate in the potential purchaser's region.

There are few region locked games in Nuuvem, and then they have "region locked to Brazil" info.

But if you only can't add to basket, VPN is enough to get around it, while key is region free.

At least used to be, not sure what current Valve policies will do Nuuvem...

You're not supporting indie devs by buying their games from resellers and key exploiters. Don't kid yourself, you just want cheap games.

Looks like the Steam Trading Adventure is over.

Today the price if TF2 keys got as low as 1,77 €
It's a VERY long time since I've seen it go that low.
It really is sad. I've traded games before, and while i have had some bad experiences with faggots sometimes, I've never been scammed.
You just have to use common sense.

I don't see anything wrong with trading games.. but what does it matter now? It's over..

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Lol...actually the price was lower than that during the Exploration sale two weeks ago. But yeah, the price for keys (any kind of key, but especially TF2) will inevitably drop while the price for games will rise. So if you still have keys I suggest you sell them or quickly trade for a few nice games, in a month from now they'll probably be worth half as much while games will be worth twice as much.

how to business:
1 - create a successful project that many people support
2 - make sure that they will always like it and need it by adding new features
3 - when your project becomes extremely big just start new features that makes your customers mad but increases profit
4 - customers are still very attached to your project and they wont change to similar projects
5 - eat popcorn and watch

That is sad, but not unexpected. Valve was turning the screws on trading lately. I remember Gabe saying something about "letting everyone open his personal shop" several years ago, I guess he has second thoughts on that.

It's unfortunate for the folks who have a lot of stock bundled up in trading. However, this restriction exists in almost every other market for hard goods-- it was only a matter of time before it came to all digital avenues as well.

What's annoying is this whole attitude of "WE DESERVE TO TRADE GAMES!" As if creating this semi-lucrative shadow market, dodging all currency regulations and tax stipulations, was somehow not only justified, but an inherent and sacred right. The writing's been on the wall for years. You are allowed to be upset, but the sanctimonious cries of "injustice" are a tad overboard.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Don't you see the hypocrisy though? You said it yourself, "dodging all currency regulations and tax stipulations". Like, say, Valve basing themselves in Luxembourg? It's ok for Valve to try and do things as cheap as possible, but it's not ok for Valve's customers? This is how capitalism works. If you can get the exact same product consistently for half the price, what sort of an idiot continues to pay 2x the price? Would you buy something in a store for $10 when your friend across the street sells the exact same thing for $5? No you wouldn't because that would be stupid. It is absolutely justified.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you're going to get high and mighty about capitalism, Valve is a privately owned company. Therefore, they are justified in setting any pricing policies they see fit. Just as you are justified in choosing to shop elsewhere.

What's hypocritical is allying yourself capitalism but then turning around and whining about capitalistic policies, rather than voting with your dollar.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's always the fallback isn't it? "Shop elsewhere". As though someone who is a paying customer can't complain about policies. You didn't actually engage with my point though did you? Just the standard "don't buy it then" nonsense you see when anyone complains. Except that doesn't really work here does it? It doesn't really work when you have already invested in Steam, and you have no choice but to use it if you want to play your games. I'm not sure where I said I would continue paying full price for games, and not "voting with my dollar". I can't see the hypocrisy. You can though, like everyone, you've just chosen to ignore it and wheel out a tired argument that nicely skirts everything I said.

Permalink

After calling me a hypocrite, I merely pointed out your own hypocrisy in touting capitalism for policies that help you, but condemning it for policies that don't. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

In any case, there's little reason to be deflecting your umbrage towards me. I only stated things as they are; everyone knew it wouldn't last forever.

Permalink

I came nowhere close to calling you a hypocrite. I asked if you couldn't see the hypocrisy that was contributing to the anger Steam users feel about the region-lock, in Steam basing themselves in Luxembourg to save money, and stopping customers from trying to do something similar. I also wasn't trying to complain about capitalism or capitalist policies in general, I tried to explain the justification for cross region trading that you claimed in your first post didn't exist. I wasn't deflecting anything at you, my first reply was only what I've explained in this post. I've known it's been coming, everyone who has been paying attention has known it's been coming, like you said. I'm just glad I made the absolute most of it while it lasted. I'm not that annoyed about it, they absolutely had to do something because of the ruble and I've already gained a fantastic amount from cross-region trading. It's going to save me money anyway I think, I won't spend as much.
