WHAT IF... Steam suddenly vanishes from the Earth, along with all databases, games, items and whatnot. Not a trace is left. Steamgifts? Can't login without Steam. All your TF2 keys? Gone. Your game collection? What game collection?

What would you miss the most?

Just a philosophy: do you own your games on Steam? Your profile? How many parts of your life is digital? Is it all worth it?

I love SG, but so often wish I wasn't hooked so hard.

I believe GabeN has said before in an interview that if Steam ever goes bust, that they would do their best to maintain customers' access to their games

I mean if they ever did,
I maybe wouldn't expect being able to play online or so, but offline..

I imagine if it did, they'd still have all the money in the world to entertain servers for people to still download and play all their games their library, too.

If Steam went bust, they probably wouldn't have any money left

How would he propose to do that? The ongoing server costs to facilitate game downloads would be well beyond the means of a company who no longer existed.

I would think it was more along the lines of either setting up p2p downloads for the games or removing the DRM so that whatever people had installed could still be run without Steam being able to connect to its servers

Actually, I'm pretty sure most of use would gain a lot of freedom back if that was going to happen

You still have that freedom. Your choice to use it or not :)

Well I suppose there's a loss of investing all that money into the games but if you have them all downloaded and they removed the Steam DRM for the ones that need it I'd be okay assuming I have my entire library downloaded already given enough warning in advance to do so it wouldn't be too big an issue for me.

That would make me wanna lynch Gabe. xD The good thing though is that I've never spent any real money on steam. The bad thing is that I would lose so many games and virtual money. ;_;

Wouldn't lose much in the way of games. I'd just pirate all the ones I previously owned. Wouldn't feel particularly bad about it since from a moral stand point I HAVE earned them. Mostly I'd miss this site and community, I think

legally you only earned the licence to play the games on steam

I said morally, not legally. What is moral is not always legal, and vice versa. I care much more about the former than the latter, unless there's a chance I'm going to be arrested, which here there really isn't.

I would lose a lot. Not sure if I would be more upset about the loss of all my games or, the fact microsoft would be so happy.

I would lose a lot of money but most important I would lose my hobby. My great, not too expensive, don't need anyone, can do it any time hobby.
Chasing games on SG.

I like Steam but I think this scenario would end up being an almost perfect opportunity for GOG to rise up and I think that we would see a LOT more DRM-free games if it ever happened.

The day that steam will be discontinued could be the same day that the internet disappears from the earth, and this day will be the same that the potable water, electricity, gas are gone too, probably this is the day of the end of the days...

Hell yeah, the apocalypse is here, so what matters the games, items and online reputation when we'll have a lot of fun trying to survive...

anyway I will miss the sales......
