Seems Sony finally learned its lesson and is now making PSN accounts optional for their games.
Blog post - https://blog.playstation.com/2025/01/29/new-in-game-content-incentives-coming-to-playstation-games-on-pc/
I hope this means that we 3rd-world plebs who aren't officially supported by the PSN can finally buy all the games post Horizon Forbidden West which all required a PSN account to play.

That's good news, indeed. It remains to be seen if new titles will also make the PSN account optional.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, it still doesn't imply anywhere that those games will be unblocked for me

indeed it does not, but we won't know before release (as I'm blocked out as well, have no idea what time exactly it takes place)

Better hope so, still baffled how they didn't think about that before, really weird that they limit some PC gaming with most F-ed up region locking, which doesn't make any sense (I "understand" about console ecosystem and it's support)

Could this mean they are doubling down on removing those region locks? They made Helldivers 2 PSN account linking optional yet it's still unavailable for users that live in countries where PSN accounts are not supported. Man, Helldivers 2 really hit deep once I realized that I literally won't be able to play the game when the region locks were pushed onto the Steam store. Would love myself something fresh to play with my friends, been trying to find something to play for ages now.

It sucks for you, cause it is really an amazing game. Fun fact, I can play it because I bougjt it before all that region locking.

indeed, didn't think about that :P weird that they didn't bring it back to store, I believe people who got it before store removal could still play it, or am I wrong?

Yep, like xarabas stated previously, people can still play the game if they have bought it before the region locks. If people can play it after the PSN account change, then why do we have region locks on those specific countries that don't support a PSN account? My conspiracy theory is that this is a marketing stunt so that once they un-region lock the game and other Sony titles then people will rush to go buy them. That's just my theory, a game theory.

lets hope it one day it will happen for what ever reason, just now we can still stare at region-locked message

I think it has something to do with selling software digitally. Otherwise, this is just a Sony fuckup. They sell games and their console here, but on Steam, I can't buy any of their games. I can make a PSN account, by selecting a country near me (or any really), so a PSN account creation isn't blocked either. I legit don't know why they removed the option to buy. Like, I somehow have Ghost of Tsushima in my library, despite seeing people get their copy refunded in non-PSN countries, and I just created a PSN account and logged into it. The game works fine, everything works fine. Sony is perhaps removing the "mandatory" so that it can sell the games again? Who knows.

Nice. I'd been avoiding several Playstation published games on PC specifically for this reason. Wishlist just got a bit bigger.

Took them long enough!
I guess they needed to be pointed out repeatedly that it was probably bad business to exclude 25%-30% of the world's population from their client base?

2/3 of the worlds population*

I remember his post but I can only assume he used AI because even using his numbers, you get an actual total of just less than 2.2 billions, which is nowhere near 2/3 of the world population.
AI is notoriously bad at simple additions.

You couldn't get to 2/3 of the population without India and China unless you had all the other countries combined.

By my calculations, the current number is just around 2.5 billions, which is just north of 30% of the current population (standing at around 8.2 billions). I can't believe I was right that first time lol (I suck at numbers)

Still, it's ridiculous that they exclude that many people.
I have seen people argue that some of these countries are "too poor" to really matter to a corporation selling entertainment but that's simply BS. Some of the poorest countries on this list have a massive population and even a small percentage of that being wealthy means millions of potential consumers ignored.

I guess when you are blinded by hate you tend to believe all kinds of crazy numbers as long as they support your argument...I stand corrected.

To be fair almost 1/3 of the world population is already pretty f-ing unbelievable and yet there it is.
Makes no sense and I hope they actually revert it because they haven't mentioned the region locking yet, just the lack of obligation of an account.

PSN account becomes optional for pc ports. That is uncontested news.
What I want clarification for is: can countries not under the PSN umbrella buy and play those games? Last I heard from a friend living in one of those countries it was still impossible.

Also, the malding of PS fanboys in the comments there, lol. Why would you ever want exclusivity? Games being available on more platforms is always best for the consumer.
