I have keys which I intend to use, however am waiting for a moment where I really want to play that game or whatever opportunity might arise while I don't wanna use it. It often happens that I see such a game being given away. This creates a small dilema, as one could enter the GA in which case I'd get the key/game straight away, and then I could use my own key either for trading or another GA. I do feel however, that this is exploiting the system and comparable to re-gifting.

What do you think?

Btw, as far as I know the Polls are anonymous (as in no one can see who voted what) so you can be honest there.

There's no rule against it. It's just up to you and your conscience. To be honest, I did that once but I felt bad afterwards so now I don't.

I think now cg can see whats the giveaway key and what key did you won. But since you don't have the game IN your library - you're free to join a giveaway for that game. However I may be wrong, but since you are giving away another copy and that the copy you won, your pretty much okey with that. But still im not sure, so wait for more comments/suggestions.

Well, it's your own key and you can do as you wish with it. Winning a GA is still winning a GA, regardless if you have a key or gift available. It's not re-gifting as long as you activated the key that you won. I, personally, do not. BUT, I have given away games from my wishlist that I still enter for, since I don't have it. It's basically the same concept, no matter if you give it away first and then win it, or if you win it (and activate it) and then give it away another time.

Pretty much the same here, I often give something away that I intended to keep, but just decide I want to do a GA... doesn't mean I no longer want it, just maybe the time wasn't right or some other cosmic thing...
Other times I get confused about a bundle I bought but then never looked at/opened the email for and enter stuff from that bundle... far as I know I've never won anything I had sitting around that I had forgotten about... but then.. If I've forgotten.... Hmmm..

I occasionally do this, but never on purpose. It's never been an issue, since I've never won a game that I have a spare key for (that I know of), and most of my spare keys are spares because I lose track of them, not because I intend to activate them later or don't want to activate them.

You can by rules, but you know, why should you enter and reducing chances of others who doesn't have that game?

Have been tempted sometimes, however, in the end, it made me feel guilty about it so never did (accidents excluded and I'm talking about keys you plan to use for yourself - if you don't win - not keys bought specifically to give away). It is allowed though.

NO.

I would never ever do that.

If I have the key I:

  1. Use it
  2. Give it
  3. There's no third option.

True! I'm a very limited person, so I just mentally added "trade" to "give", although I know that's not the correct term.

Forgive my mind, it only has 2GB RAM, poor thing. Promise I'll upgrade soon.

And thanks for pointing it out.

There is clearly no rule that mentions anything about it, it wouldn't be traceable either so this is not to discuss. The only thing is the ethics dealing with it. I would never enter something I want when I have a key/gift for the game if I want to trade it. When it's about keeping it to give it away, that's something else.

Edit: I'll deal with this myself, there was some input in this thread I am able to use.

Make ga for higher lvls, they are usually very nice people :)

I've learned that the level doesn't really make difference and is no indicator for someone being better than someone who is level 1. :/

Never did I say that they are better than lower lvl's. But perhaps they understand better how special it is to receive something. I also mentioned word "usually", meaning the there are douche bags everywhere.

But what happened? Not once I have encountered a bad gift recipient. I won GA and creator just doesn't do anything. But I have not encountered a person that is rude after winning a GA.

Nothing unusual really, just the usual you come across all the time when you are active in the forum. Ungrateful, rude little shits. Always having a history in CV farming, regifting and what not.
I rant so much and could go into detail with this, but I'm just exhausted, so I hope this will do.

i see no problem with that. you wouldn't break any rules as long as you don't have that game in your library before winning it, and you activate it when the ga creator sends it.

And then you give away the excess copy, increase your CV.and that's where things get weird.
I mean, if I already have a key or gift copy available, to me winning the game would just feel like regifting the won copy and keeping the one I already had for myself.

i can also wait to win a game instead of buying it from the store with my steam wallet.
is that also considered wrong? because it's the same thing.

not really the same thing I'd say
if you already have a key, then you know that no matter what, you'll have the game when you want it
if you haven't bought it yet, then you may be missing a great deal/sale, or the probability of winning is really low, so you will most probably not have the game the moment you actually wanna play it

I have The Witcher 3 on GOG, and no, I don't enter in giveaways of the same game for Steam. Just an example.

I had this problem a while back I had a key for Scourge, but I had entered a few giveaways with Scourge. I thought if I won it there I would just create a giveaway with it to give it to someone else, but I never won and I stopped (I think I only entered like 5 of them all public with no level requirements) now the key still sits in my notepad with a few others I haven't used nor created a GA for.

This issues was raised a couple of times before... bottom line: not illegal; hard to enforce if it was illegal; most of the people don't like persons who do that and now, when you we have "blacklists", this move could put you on some.

I've done it a few times when I knew that I'll eventually buy the bunde (Killer 3 ) but that little sound in my ear told me " what if you win it before? You'll have an extra copy" - and while I really wanted to give it to a friend, but in the meanwhile two things happened:
-realized how stupidly and greedily I acted

  • he also bought the bundle
No harm done as I didn't win it, but since then I never enter for games I have activation keys for. While there's no rule against it, it just doesn't feel good to do so.
Also, I never enter for giveaways I already have at GOG... besides Torchlight..hmm...I should give up the idea, I would never grin out it's achievement :)

To me, entering feels like I wasted the money used to buy my copy.

As new user one thing I wonder is, what if I buy some game that I don't own and I don't really want that much for now, only for a giveaway, I create the giveaway and it goes ok, and some time later I win that same game on a giveaway.

Have anyone seen that be confused with regift? There is a game now on sale at a bundle website that I'm in no hurry to play, its a good promo so I was thinking to buy it to make a giveaway and wait for another sale to buy it for me, or join giveaways to try win a copy for myself.

Could I be blacklisted by mistake or people check dates and stuff?

(Its not a game from a bundle, its at the bundle site store)

It won't be confused with regifting as you would have the game on your steam account. Regifting is when you win something and use it for a giveaway so before reporting users people check if the game is activated on user's account.

I think it's fine. You can compare it to having spare money to buy a game you want, but you don't want to spend the money, and instead enter giveaways. No one can tell you what to do.

I call this the "Fortix Dilemma": You do not own Fortix, yet you are not allowed to buy Fortix for yourself per the rule. So you enter Fortix giveaways for yourself while you have multiple copies of Fortix in your inventory for pending Fortix giveaways... Fortix.

As long as you activate your win, it's fine.

Pretty much what MuahahahaMeow said. You could either win a game and then give it away or you give it away and then win it. Both situations are the same, just reversed how it happens.
