What can the cause(s)? When I insert a pair of headphones I still get the crackling noise indicating the headphones are in contact with the audio socket, but any sound would be heard from the phone speaker only. The model is the Motorola G4 standard version.

Edit: The problem is the number of rings on the metal bit of the headphones that goes in the headphone socket. Two ringed headphones work, but those with three rings like the Apple earbuds will not work. However, I use Apple earbuds before and other three-ringed earbuds without issue until yesterday.

dust is an option. try cleaning it.
air pressure is the best. if not, a good Q-tip... carefull, if the tip falls off inside, you are totally screwed.

Have you tried with different headphones? maybe the phone has problems detecting them, it happens sometimes, I have a pair of headphones that don't work with my smartphone but work fine with other devices.
If your phone audio jack is defintelly dead I supose you can always use bluetooth headphones.

Ugh headphones. Whenever I try using my headphones for running on my galaxy s3, the thing will influence my volume and it keeps going up or down by itself.

There is three ring actually - rigt phone, left phone ang ground.) Those wich have more - have a micro (headsets) or/and some more features, like volume control, change tracks etc.
You must crefully check what you put in it.

And one more thing.)
Upd. Ok maybe two.)
Since I had my first "music' phone in 2007 (Sony Ericsson W200i), if you want a good music and long play time - get a separate player.
And dont use cheap headphones - they breaking jack.(
