Just get a 360 controller. They work great and are made for Windows and many games are already in tune with them so you get the buttons and stuff on screen. The generic ones are crap. Get an official Microsoft one. They're $20-$30 depending where you get it.
The XboxOne controller does not work at all with the PC yet and the DS4 (PS4 controller) does work but not completely. Why spend double the price of a 360 controller that was made for Windows for a controller that does not work the same way it does with the console? The touchpad and that stuff may not even work on the PC.
I've had a 360 Controller for Windows for the last 3 years. It is easily the best controller I've ever played with on the PC. Its got a great weight to it and it survives throws across the room when Super Meat Boy pisses me off and the only games that are incompatible with it are old games (altho there are usually Pinnacle profiles for them) or games that cant be played with controllers, literally everything I need a controller for the 360 controller does well. The only thing that I am going to consider replacing it with is the Steam controller once that is released. The XB1 and PS4 controllers were not designed for the PC. The 360 controller was designed for its console AND the PC.

Another +1 for the Xbox controller for Windows. I got the wireless one and couldn't be happier. It just WORKS, no muss, no fuss. AND, I can connect up to 3 other controllers with the receiver I got with it... including straight XBox 360 controllers.

This doesnt make any sense.
If function is your #1 priority, the 360 controller for Windows is ubiquitous, guaranteed to work and supported by virtually every game released since 2007. Why would you get a controller (PS4 or XB1) where functionality is a major issue? One of them doesnt even work at all with the PC right now and the other is limited in function. And in respect to comfort, if you get an XBoxOne controller, its the same design as a 360 controller with a touchpad that may or may not ever work with PC games and doesnt work at all with the PC at the moment.
You get an XB1 controller now, you're going to be waiting months for it to work with your PC. The PS4 has only limited use, but it does work now. If you're wanting to invest in the future, go for the XB1, but it wont solve your problem of playing with a shitty controller anytime soon.

I'm not sure why you're so opposed to the XB1 pad (which isn't the one with the touchpad), especially considering the fact that the drivers will be backwards compatible with games optimized for the Xbox 360 controller, so functionality shouldn't be an issue come early 2014. Regardless, you're right in other respects, so I'm gonna be getting the 360 pad anyways.

I'm not opposed to the XB1 controller at all, it just doesnt work with the PC right now. There is no date for those drivers to be available other than "2014". In your case, where you dont have a controller that works decently, it wouldnt be the best decision if you want a controller to use any time soon.

I just recently got the brand name Microsoft 360 wired controller and I really like it. Got it on sale for 40 bucks Canadian before taxes and shipping was free on Amazon.ca.
Works like a charm, don't have to worry about any software. Every game I have tried it on works perfectly. It even has rumble built in which surprised me when it first started to shake in my hands. lol

Wired Xbox 360 controller works fine. Official from Microsoft. Why pay extra for the XB1 edition? It looks different... I'll have to lay my hands on one in the store to determine if I like it, but the 360 controller feels perfect. It's a superb design and my hands fit it exactly.
I have a PS3 controller as well, but haven't been able to get it working on the PC. Works well enough on my smartphone, but I'm not that big on phone gaming. PS3 controller is unusually small. PS4 controller is a bit bigger (or at least wider, because of the touch pad) but I'm not sure it's quite right. Got a chance to play AC4 for a little bit over the weekend, but I turned it down. Wishing I would have given it a shot now, just to get a feel for (and thus better opinion of) the controller.

I use my 360 controller and I occasionally have 4 controllers connected to the wireless receiver for some sweet splitscreen (Yup, people still do that)

After many long months of using a horrid generic-brand, half-working Xbox 360 controller, I feel that I seriously need an upgrade. I'd like to buy something high quality that'll last for many years to come, so I'm almost certainly going to buy either a PS4 or an Xbox One controller.
I prefer the look and (based on reports) feel of the MS contender, but I haven't heard much about PC compatibility, which, if I remember correctly, is natively available with the PS4 gamepad. If any of you have tried or personally own either of the controllers, or even if you know something extra about the PC <-> Gamepad relationship, I'd appreciate your opinion.
