The first code they give you is a redeem code for Fanatical itself, not a Steam code. If you click redeem it will take you to the Fanatical page where you can redeem it. For me it had me choose between 3 gift boxes and then gave me the Steam code for my free game.

I just bought some games on Fanatical and got a key for a Birthday Sale - Free Gift. Curiously, it doesn't tell me which game it is. Is that normal? Is there a way to check which game it is?
(I would rather giveaway the code than add a game I absolutely won't play, but I can't create a giveaway without knowing the game, right?)
