Yeah I noticed the same thing. It may have to do with functionality of the chat API, since the one used on mobile is different from the one used on your desktop.

well it looks like it only shows a couple of lines from your last conversation, but that "last conversation" is pretty random for starters, makes you wonder where did they pull it from :]
and some people freaking out they want to clear the stuff and all..

Hey actually some of the changes are going into steam client as well http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta#announcements
Like they REMOVED "/me" command :O (and you'll be able to see some recent chat history and do offline messages)

have you noticed it peeps? :3 I logged into Steam but in the web browser and I saw 8 new messages.. Turned out these were messages from way, WAY back, don't even remember from when exactly. Not the recent week even.
I'm clicking people on my friendslist and for most people I get some weird pieces of conversation from random times in the past, pretty sure some aren't even the most recent ones.
Weird.
Just in case you thought Steam isn't logging your discussions :3 Paranoia ensues ;)
I wonder does it mean you'll be able to leave offline messages or something (yes.. offline messages are coming!)
