Hi,

So the game seems cool to learn some guitar basics, the problem is they oblige you to use that stupid oficial USB cable or it won´t reconize your guitar. I don´t even want to use USB as i have a dedicated soundcard which i am pretty sure is more than capable to play the guitar.

I know there are some workarounds but i wanted to ask you if you know of one that works fine, also if it works with the demo as i have the game on my inventory just in case i can´t make it work. I cheked in my amazon equivalent in my country and can´t even find the stupid cable alone, just some PS3 copies with the cable costing up a fortune!

Sorry for bad english, i haven´t slept all night.

Thank you in advance!

Edit 1: Thanks for the answers, i am ging to try the workarounds with the demo and see if i have any luck, althought i wont be able to do it until next saturday where i get my guitar back.

Real Tone Cable gives you good quality of sound and little lag without need of having a good sound card. There are some workarounds, I'm not sure if they work with Steam though. I recommend getting a Real Tone Cable if you have crappy sound card anyway.

That would imply he DID read more than the headline. Seems to be a disease in many forums though that people can't read.

You can try looking up "NoCable" for some alternatives.
Been reading up more on it again (since the last time I read about it, my memory misremembered the alternative solutions as being fairly straightforward, if rather involved, when in reality, the alternatives are pretty inflexible and hacky).

In part of what I read, it seems the game itself can't use ASIO (although the cable can), and instead uses DirectX [edit] no longer true? see ninjalj's reply [/edit] for its audio. In case you aren't familiar with ASIO, not being able to use it (on Windows) is fucking terrible. ASIO is one of the lowest-latency options and it's what I always use when recording with Reaper and my own pro-level audio interface (generally speaking, audio interface = sound card on steroids, in case you aren't familiar). So it is apparently impossible for the game to have less than 30ms of latency. 20ms is audible, 30ms is godawful (slight exaggeration... but it will slowly drive you mad) for someone who has a good sense of musical timing. I usually try to get down to around 7ms or less with my own equipment.

In other words, I'd probably just get the stupid official cable if I ever came to own the game legitimately. Perhaps you can find some in your country (or willing to ship to you) on ebay?

When I tried to find the cable on ebay its price was around $50 with shipping. And shipping would take at least a month. Seriously, paying $7 for the game and 5 times more for a cable is ridiculous.

I'm playing with my own cable via my soundcard, and latency is alright. Mostly. It screws up on occasions for some low notes (I'm playing on bass). Also, there are a few others problems which can be annoying but at least it's playable.

Hell, I'd probably buy the bloody cable for whatever it was priced if it was available here.

Maybe it's ridiculous, but Real Tone Cable it's not "just a cable" it'a a soundcard bulit in cable. Thats why it's so expensive.

Yeah, but it is more of a DRM than anything, because if not there is no excuse not to let you use a common cable, specially on a PC...

DRM or not, it was made so everyone can enjoy the game on more or less the same level of quality. With the cable, I can enjoy the game on my laptop with crappy integrated sound card. So in my opinion the cable is a good thing. It's not like it makes the game much more expensive.

I don't really see the point of selling the game on Steam/GMG/wherever they sell it without a cable, while the cable alone costs as much as the game. Getting a retail boxed version with a cable(~30€ on eBay) is much better option than getting it on Steam.

Read above. If I'm to buy the cable on ebay it would cost me around $50 (yay shipping). Amazon seems to be a better option actually, much better than ebay.

And, yes, I understand that cable is a great solution for developers and most of the players but it's not the only one. It's just dumb of Ubi to restrict other cables from use when they are obviously working. It's a DRM system that doesn't prevent piracy at all but creates a lot of trouble for actual consumers.

A friend of mine has the game for PS3 and PC, and he uses the same cable for both versions, so it working the way it does is likely for that reason. It sucks that the PC version won't allow alternate choices, but that cable does exist for a reason.

Rocksmith uses WASAPI (new sound API in Vista) through PortAudio. It should be able to open the audio device in exclusive mode, and in perfect conditions should achieve low latencies (~3ms).

WASAPI is not bad, so that's good news. The info I was reading, admittedly, was fairly old.

I have known how to trick the program into believing your cable is real. It's been a time and don't know right now. Formatted my PC. But there was a video for this. Let me check it on my list for you ^^

I would like to know too. If I need that cable to get non-laggy sound on my integrated audio card I'll delete the demo right away.

Here it is:

"1. Find you sound driver name in device manager(example: Realtek High Definition Audio).

  1. Go to windows registry editor(regedit).

  2. Find this line HKEY(underline)LOCAL(underline)MACHINE(slash)SOFTWARE(slash)Microsoft(slash)Windows(slash)CurrentVersion(slash)MMDevices(slash)Audio(slash)Capture

  3. Then in this category find your "line in" port string of your sound driver.

  4. Replace you driver name on Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter.

  5. Go to control panel -> sound

  6. Check recording tab

  7. You line-in controller name must change to Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter(Just in case, switch off other unused ports in recording tab)."

This is it. This worked for me. Hope it works for you too. Copied them straight from YouTube comments.
At 3rd one, put "" where it says "(slash)" without quote marks (""). And (underline) = _

Laggy or not?

It only has some sizzles in it. Try it if you want, save the original parameters, put these on, and if you don't like turn back.

Doesn't work for me, claims the cable isn't connected.

EDIT: I downloaded the patched "Rocksmith.exe" and it works perfectly. Huzzah.

In clarity to what I read, the usb adapter is the same for the PC, PS3, and 360. No matter what the description says, it will work on all 3.

Hope you can find the cable. It's awesome. It could be worse, it could require UPLAY. :p
Actually get really decent sound when recording with Audacity for instance.

Here's what I did (I bought the cable but it hasn't arrived yet).

  • Download the patched Rocksmith.exe from here.
  • Find your "Line In" device under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/MMDevices/Audio/Capture" in the Registry and rename it to "Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter".
  • Disable all other Recording devices under your audio options/devices in Windows.

And that's it. Worked for me. You can now connect your Guitar to the line-in of your Sound Card and use that.
