I have to admit it was for a old game, back when key generators were a thing. It was Half-Life, I unearthed it from my nostalgic dusty little PC game chest buried on a deserted island and now someone used my key and Steam won't do a thing because they expect me to have a receipt for a game I bought over 10 years ago.

With a key generator or some pirate website that distributes serial keys.

Steam support can check a key and confirm if it is used or not. At least, they did it once :)
