I have always thought about getting it. I think the sheer amount of inclusions in the complete pack seems daunting though. If I were to buy the complete pack would it just be to overwhelming to begin to play?
Edit: And would you need all of the DLC to enjoy the game? And would it be better to get 2013 or 2012?

THe complete pack includes the expansion, and automatically unlocks the decks you would have otherwise earned by playing, as well as their foil conversions. Foil cards are just cosmetic. All the decks have their own play style, but are independent of each other. you cant mix and match between them, so it shouldn't be too overwhelming.
Remember, this is basically a high quality demo(I don't know if thats quite the right word) of the real card game, intended to teach people the basics, and hopefully to entice them to play the regular game/mtgo.

So in theory the Complete pack is just a fast track to getting everything unlocked? Can everything be unlocked through playing the game?
I understand what you mean about "Demo" as I guess it would be difficult to harnass every aspect of the actual card game.

It wouldn't be overwhelming due to getting the complete pack, but for the reasons Kario stated it may not be worth it, if it's cheaper to get the base game + the expansions and the deck packs you'd have everything you actually need IMO, not sure what's cheaper, although tbh, you'll be fine with just the base game for starting out, if you enjoy it you can pick up more content when the summer sale rolls around.
you don't need all the DLC to enjoy the game, and I would recommend 2013 over 2012. 2013 has a bit of a graphical uplift, as well as fewer bugs (especially in MP, but still not totally devoid of them), the main difference is that they each offer a different "special" mode, 2012 offers Archenemy and 2013 offers Planechaser, it's hard for me to really pick between the two because they are so differing that's it's not easy to compare, but overall I definitely say 2013 is the better game to get

I'm interested to hear opinions to Hartraft's questions as well. Thanks in advance!

Between 2012 and 2013 I've spent over 100 hours into both games. I don't really have much of an interest in card games IRL, for various reasons, but I can say, as a fan of strategy games that Magic is quite fun, just playing single player alone will last you quite awhile, and if you have some friends who are interested in playing it you'll find yourself spending quite a few hours

It was my first experience with magic the gathering and I like it.
I dont have a lot of hours in it because other games keep getting in the way but its a fun game to be sure.

I am a vet of the actual card game, I started around 3rd Ed, so quite a while ago.
While the video game is very limited compared to what you can do with the real card game and the devs don't really seem to care to do any updates and don't seem to care to reward people for buying previous editions, the game is fun even against AI as long as you get some decent cards at the start.
I just wish the devs would listen to what the players want, and actually do more bug fixes and updates and as a thank you for buying the games in previous years bring all those cards into the latest version and give us total control over making our desk, even to the point of setting it up the way we want (with a shuffle feature before the game starts too).
Its 80% off if you get the gold game version, that comes with the main game, expansion and the 3 deck packs. Don't bother with the foils its just a waste of money as all they do is make your system work harder.

I was just about to make a post but then I saw that this guy said everything I wanted to say.
Kind of fun in the beginning. Devs are ignorant. So its good if this is your first magic game, but be expected to have complaints and not see them in 2014 versoin

As you said you aren't a fan already of MTG I don't know how much you will enjoy it, and although the game trys to teach you all the complex interactions it does skip a few (phyrexian mana springs to mind),
For those that are fans of MTG and have not yet picked this up, this is very cheap and its a pretty good game although the deck customisation is very limited. You could also wait for MTG2014 which should be out june/july

If you aren't already a fan it should be fun enough. As a fan of the actual card game myself, I still like it, despite the fact that it is very slow and restrictive in comparison to the paper and official online games. Don't go into it expecting anything easy, even at the lower levels. Some of the challenges can be pretty complex and both Planechase and Archenemy modes will make you think about what you're doing.
