Does anyone think anyone will ever create a true universal platform where you can just centralize all your other game purchases from other platforms with proper authentication, that then centralizes all of your owned media/games from their servers to download from? (like have drop downs for the different builds/versions as choices)

Some things if it ever happens of what should be included:

  1. Social combination to see friends from your other networks centralized
  2. Ability to remote install / re-download again later (pause/resume)
  3. cross (cloud based?) platform (can work on consoles + windows + mac + linux/steamOS)

Edit: added a few more things it should include

Ya i know, it is more of a pipe dream than a reality :(

+1
As long as there are consoles/platforms from companies that also produce video games we'll continue to have exclusive content for those

Asking on SteamGifts what's everyone's favourite platform.

Now do the same on Ubisoft forum, EA forum, and so on. Taadaa, you have bunch of polls with useless, judgmental results.

So you just read the poll and skipped the entire post then?

When every other platform goes obsolete, GOG will come in like a hero and give us the option to activate all our old games on GOG and get DRM-free copies. IT'S ALREADY STARTED.

Not to sound hippie, but as long as our gaming is in the hand of corporations, we really have no control over how and where we are allowed to play our games unless we pirate them or the game is in the Witcher series and we get a Steam/Origin/whatever else copy AND then also a GOG copy for hassle-free play (I am pretty sure Witcher 3 will join 1 and 2 on the "backup copy" list)

TL;DR: The one TRUE universal platform is your hard drive and/or the Interwebz

Edit: If I come to think about it, the one platform that allows us to access every game on every platform is really every pirate website... And it's not in the hand of a bunch of overpaid fatasses with no support team...

  1. Every friend can be seen on Skype/any messaging client.
  2. You can download any time you want, anything you want, you can pause, you can backup, no frills.
  3. IF the game supports it, pirates always find a way for multiplayer, it's not that hard, there are a lot of people here playing CS 1.6 from torrents.

YOU JUST MADE ME MAKE PIRACY SOUND GOOD. It's freedom, but if everyone does it, you won't be left with anything to pirate, since the devs won't have food.

That was not the intention, I just wanted something more universal than steam to use on all my devices that keeps all my games localized on 1 server, without having to constantly re-buy on other platforms.

That's what GOG is trying to do + DRM-free, but it will take a while. Though I'm pretty sure all the games that aren't on GOG today will become classics and will be available on GOG as legacy games somewhere in the not-so-near future.

Not all of these are platforms. And Banana isn't even out yet, it's like in alpha phase atm.

I like DRM-free games. Because you don't actually own games you buy on Steam.

Just wait for it. When I get rich I will buy off Valve, Microsoft, EA, Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, GoG, and then make a truly universal platform for everyone. Just wait for it...
