Judging by the reviews, this game needs a remake rather than just a remaster. Good find tho.

https://steamcommunity.com/id/Csontzuzo/recommended/1283770/ according to him, not that bad. His reviews are usually good.

The dev sounds either nice, or totally delusional, seen that who thougt they can make the game better then it still stayed an abomination. At least it's cheap, but the reviews look baaaaaad. Will check the videos and gameplay a bit more, but it doesn't look like a must-have

Question is if the remake will be significantly improved or not.

I like messing with the 'final discount' crew, but it was cool to see this get one final sale. I had this on my WL for a while.

Because I love the movie, I bought it...
I see they really care for the game, there are many developers who would probably just dump the game if people had these reactions on it.
I believe!

There's the 1953 movie version (bears only a superficial relation to the book), a 1980s "sequel" series to the 1953 movie (bit weird), the Spielberg/Tom Cruise movie (actually follows the book reasonably well and I found it to be a surprisingly decent adaption) and a recent (2019? I think?) BBC tv adaption (notable for being the only adaption set in the actual period of the book) and also the modern "reinterpretation" series with Gabriel Byrne among others (started out ok but got kinda batshit crazy as it went on, I kinda lost interest near the end of S2).
If you enjoy the Jeff Wayne version IIRC there's a RTS-ish game from the late 90s or early 00s adapted from that. Been trying to find it secondhand retail for years, don't know if it's sold anywhere.

Yeah there are alot of adaptions now, I think is in the public domain now so it's easier.
There's a French abandonware site i haven't been to for ages, maybe it's ended up there. Would prefer a legit or retail copy though.
Thanks for bringing this up, I had no idea this was even available. For a story that seems ripe for game adaptions there really aren't that many. A shame it doesn't seemed to have worked, would have thought a survival/stealth game would have worked a treat. Maybe second times the charm.

BBC tv adaption (notable for being the only adaption set in the actual period of the book)
I'll have to give a small correction. Apart from the musical, which was a semi-literal retelling of the book (which some changes made to better fit the format), there's also the 2005 Timothy Hines movie, which sticks very close to the book. Too close in fact, and as a result it just feels poorly paced. There was a re-cut released a few years later which I've heard is an improvement, but still not great. I've tried to track it down, but been unable to do so.
Beware that the old RTS game is a pain to get running on modern computers. It's a decent enough game, all things considered, but I would not call it amazing.

Ah you're right I remember it now, thought it was a bit "meh" at the time, had hoped for something more substantial. Most of the time I appreciate when an adaption doesn't stray too far from its source material but thought it was ok. The BBC series in the same time period was mostly ok, but they did make some.... interesting changes...and the war machines looked like they were lifted right out of half-life 2 (sorry I just had to say it!)
I purposely ignored recommending the Asylum version; I consider it a public service to steer people away from crap...trash...budget productions ๐.
I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty trying to get old games (esp retail) working again, though I admit some are much harder than others without a VM running the actual OS it was made for. I do see the appeal of GOG though, sometimes you just want it to work out of the box!

There are lots of stuff actually. There's the 1953 one as Mhol1071 mentioned, but there are actually a fare few more.
In 2005 there were no less than three War of the Worlds movies released. One was the big budget Spielberg one, then The Asylum made a mockbuster (which was dire) and Timothy Hines made one that was very close to the book. The last one had been in production for a while so it seems to have been pure accident that it ended up being releases so close to the big budget one.
Then The Asylum made a sequel, which was awful. There is at least 2 2012 ones and a 2013 one neither of which I've not seen (one of the 2012 ones are animated) and another one got released earlier this year (also not seen)
As far as TV series goes, it's the 80's one which Mhol mentioned as well as the recent BBC and French/American ones which got released at the same time. The BBC one is rather short and I did not love it, but it wasn't bad. The French/American one started out quite good but lost the plot after a while and I doubt I'll even bother watching the upcoming Season 3.

Of course the 2005 one with Tom Cruise, it was amazing.

I actually think the 1953 one is better than the 2005 one. Good thing you specified it was the Tom Cruise one, as otherwise I would have had to ask which of the three War of the Worlds movies released in 2005 you were referring to :P (Well, the Asylum one is pretty dire so I would assume you did not mean that one. The Timothy Hines one is interesting, and I can see why someone who enjoy the book would enjoy that one, but I did not think it was any good. It was following the book too closely and was not paced like a movie)

+1 about the 1953 version. As an adaption of the book it's pretty woeful but as movie in itself it's really good, a great example of 1950s American sci-fi and has great production values for the time. I did enjoy the Spielberg version more than I thought I would though, if only perhaps because his usual saccharin touches were absent. And the full basement/cellar sequence. I don't consider myself a purist but I feel any decent adaption needs the moral/ethical issues that scene brings up. To be honest it would make a pretty great role playing element of a video game.

I don't know fully why this hit me the way it did, but the acknowledgement of past failures and the seeing of potential in a product definitely resonates. I ended up putting the 2โฌ down for the potential remaster since not only am I interested in a better take for this game, but I'm also happy to try and help someone try and redeem themselves since I know I'd be grateful if someone took the leap if I needed it.
Hoping for the best, but won't be mad if it doesn't work out.

With 11000 games and just bought it, what do you think? I didn't even get a chance to touch https://store.steampowered.com/app/1873170/Cease_To_Breathe/ (which i kindly got for free) and while i love old style point and click adventure games, also certain real life stuff and a kitten that i think likes to tease me on purpose with her littler box thing is not helping me actually finding time lately to play games. Oh okay i did play and finish Goblins 5, and a bit of Grapple Dog.
I bought it because i got a strong interest in War of the Worlds, that's my personal reason.
As to if i played it, there will many in a long waiting list.
Just as the remake will going to be a total gamble.
As i said very much on the top, https://steamcommunity.com/id/Csontzuzo/recommended/1283770/ I really value his reviews and his opinion.

I suppose there's always the possibility that they're just trying to drum up more sales but I don't think so. Also it sounds like the original isn't terrible (if you stick with it) and it's only a couple bucks, so I'll take a chance on it. Thanks for the info!

Just saw that there's another War of the Worlds game coming. It's not from this dev and tbh it doesn't look that good, but I put it on my wishlist:

Damn, that's exactly the kind of game I'd love to play with this IP, scavenger/survivor/stealth....but single player focused without the prospect of actual people wrecking it. Maybe tack on some limited combat and role playing elements and it could be a good adventure game sort of. Thanks for the heads up, wishlisted for now, see where it goes.

Ok, you convinced me with this thread to give this one a chance, I've seen a few people in my activity buying this one and was wondering what was going on with a game with mostly negative reviews. It's not like it's that expensive of a gamble with that pricetag tho, but still, let's hope the remaster ends up being worth it.
And as always, thanks for the info :)

"After a couple of years of crippling personal issues that kept me away from development, I came back to find that Grey Skies has issues, and has been reviewed extremely poorly. I was unaware of just how bad it was until recently.
I came back to it with fresh eyes after more than two years and completely understand the issues most people have taken with it.
I still think that underneath these issues we made a decent game. So I am remastering the game with new technologies that have become available, and my own improved knowledge of development. I will read through all the concerns carefully and address each one, paying close attention to the most common complaints, such as clunky movement and frustrating stealth elements.
I really appreciate each and every one of you that took a chance on it. So the remaster will be automatically added to any library that already owns the original Grey Skies, free of charge of course. The original Grey Skies will soon be removed from sale.
I hope it will go some way to rectify mistakes we have made on this and that some of you might be willing to give it another go. I'll give an update on this as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Nathan"
