Came here to recommend that one. Lol. Pretty good-looking survival game. It's fun, hard, and enjoyable. Still kind of wish there was a button to donate money to the devs or something.

No More Room in Hell is pretty good. It's free, the graphics look pretty good, and you can just create a server. Make a random jibberish password and set the max players to 2. And bada boom. Now it's single-player.

Also it's fun, which is the most important. However it's a very slow-paced and kind of quiet zombie game when you're not firing your small pouch of ammo.
So if OP doesn't want a very slow-paced game, they should probably stay away from it however.

Played it a bit long time ago, so stuff might changed, but playing it as single-player wasn't all that fun - you could do it, but it really was missing something compared to even 2 player coop.
But then, didn't played it since like release, slow-pace didn't work for me. But those few games were fun, remember how once I was last man standing and other people were making bets if I make it out or not XD

Trackmania Nations - singleplayer + still good graphic.
Trackmania 2 Universal Demo (I'm not sure if it is still avalible) - Very good graphic, free but it have limits (on TM2 Valley it's impossible to reach this limits <not sure if I should be happy or sad>).
For good graphic and free game at the same time there are still mmo games but there are not any survival type for free if I'm not wrong (except transformice but it's different kind of survival).

As for good graphics - well, it all depends what OP wanted. IMO, Trackmania has "playable graphics", aka "in no way making playing impossible".
You wouldn't make screenshots from it and show in art-gallery, would you?

From TM2 Why not :D? For me graphic there is really good
Universal Demo can be named time trials because the only limit there is a time that you can play it (2hr) .What is nice game cout time only when on multi-player is more than 100 players that's why in Valley this limit practically don't exist because there is always less than 100 players.

Well, if we'd start looking at demos, we'd probably build a nice list of games.
As for graphics: I'm not saying they are bad, not at all. But they are not breathtaking, and it really depends on OP what are "good graphics" - maybe only stuff that can be shown in art-galleries are new paintings/photos are "good graphics"?

Storyline suck, safe system is not avalible, it's perma death and what's even more difficult is depending on where you live.

PuniTy is a good looking game. It's the P.T. in Unity. It's not exactly that, but something like it. It's graphics are really good, but it's not on Steam.

Best I can think of are the Freespace Open Mods that are standalones now, but they are not exactly what you are looking for I suspect.

There were also Half-Life 2 Mods that are standalone now which are single player. I recommend Underhell which may actually be up your street.

Spelunky (the original, non-HD edition) is free, action packed and health replenishers are so rare that it can be called survival (like survival horror, except for the horror part).
