so I've been looking through my Steamgifts wins and checking which I've shamefully neglected only to discover that, while there are indeed some that I haven't played (much or even at all) there's also a lot which I know I've played more than Steam thinks that I have. some checking seems to indicate that Steam fails to record time played in offline mode, which is rather annoying when I do most of my gaming offline at the moment (I'm having to use my phone as a personal hotspot until I can pay the broadband and that has a data limit)
is there some way to slap some sense into Steam and get it to record these times and then upload them when it does have a connection? or some kind of sensible workaround?

I would also like if it saved your offline play time and add it to your online play time, because my first ever Steam game that I finished was The Darkness II , now I didn't have internet then so I just installed the game and downloaded steam through my phone, and used my phone just to set it up, got almost all the achievements so when I connected to steam it showed unlocked what 80% of the achievements and played 10minutes on the game -_- so dumb...

Iยดve played and finished Deus Ex Invisible War in online mode. Steam says 1.3 h playtime :D All other games have the correct playtime. Seems like offline mode is not the only problem.

I'm interested in something like this as well as my internet has been unreliable lately.

I played some games in windowed mode (sometimes forced through the start line command admittedly, but that wasn't always the case) and steam refused to count the played time, although I wasn't playing them offline. Sometimes the achievements failed to unlock, sometimes not.... Steam seems to be rather moody when it comes to recording my actual playtime ^^"

I have completed games I won here that, if the creator checks, would think I'm an ungrateful prick who is even unable to idle for cards.

:(

I just played them on a crappy laptop offline

I believe different games work differently; some seem to record offline play time -- and achievements! -- perfectly well and sync them up next time you go online, whereas Steam seems to remain completely unaware of offline playtime and awarded achievements in other games.

You'll occasionally see people with impossible play time and achievement combinations due to this, too. I know I've played a few games where I missed out on "completed level 1" style achievements because I did them while offline, and then I've been awarded the rest of the game's achievements because I unlocked them while online.

Kerbal Space Program: recorded time - 557h, real time - 2000h+
X-Com: UFO Defense: recorded time - 86h, real time - around 700h
On the other hand I wish I could lower my CSGO and Fallout Shelter time. I scored a lot of hours when their processes failed to close while I went to sleep on several occasions.
I believe I got on 3 or 4 blacklists because many times my entire day playtime with won games was not recorded. I also used to have some game I can't recall now with all cards dropped and 0.0h playtime showing.

I have had the same issue. I even tried to get it to log the hours by leaving the game open in online mode as I lost connection, but it would only keep the one minute or so from when I had connection. I also tried keeping Steam open in online mode for the entire time I had no connection (meaning I never shut down my computer - also meaning my computer definitely hated me) so that it would still have the "You've played XX minutes/hours" message with my offline playtime once I could reconnect, but even then it threw that data out the window regardless. Now, luckily, I have internet in my home but it does still suck that there are a few hundred hours of various games that Steam just refuses to acknowledge. Especially bad is when some of the achievements actually worked somehow, making me look like a cheater with a bunch of achievements unlocked and a playtime of a few minutes. .__.;;

Would be nice to give players the options in steam settings of doing that, enabled by default maybe (?), and let players choose to turn it off if they so wish. Could have a cache which holds what games were played, how many hours were played/when they were played at (so 80 hours of game time just doesn't magically appear), what achievements were earned and the big one is when it was earned(so it doesn't look like an achievement script gave them to you.

I didn't read all the previous posts, but most games correctly record achievements, which is how i determine whether someone has played the games they won from me anyway. Only posting here to bother guber with a notification.

The question is, why would you even want to record your time and stats? I deliberately block my Steam client via firewall, putting it in offline mode. I for one, am happy it does not record stats in offline mode and wouldn't want it any other way. Playtime, achievements and so forth are just pretty names for the fact that Steam is spying on you. It's bad enough that Steam knows exactly what kind of games we like to play and how much we're willing to pay for them - do we really need to feed them more intel on when and how often we play or when exactly we reached a particular point in a certain game ("achievement").

mostly so that people whose giveaways I've won, should they wish to check, can confirm that I have indeed played those wins and for myself to keep track of which wins I've not yet played

Each to their own, I guess. Still, if you need records on Steam to keep track of your winnings, then maybe, just maybe, you got too many games already? ;-) Also, when a giveaway creator wants to check whether I played a game that I've won, they're free to ask me. It's not like they're entitled to check it, but still, as a giveaway creator I'd prefer some feedback about what the winner liked or disliked to some pesky achievements and playtime anytime.

They probably won't bother to fix it since it's not losing them money. Steam is buggy.

That happened to me with Stardew Valley. I have triple the time on it. Some games have recorded the time and others haven't :/
