There should be rules for games having achievements on the store?

No

There really should be yeah! I mean there must be a limit.. Or should be at least..
If it's a suuper long game or a re-playable game, sure I can understand. But not if you can get all the achievements in ~1.3 hours.

Sadly enough there are more than a handful of these games on Steam now with 1000+ achievements. :|

And I can only really think of a single game with over 1000 achievements where getting the achievements requires a lot of effort, and that's Tales of Maj'eal.

Indeed..That game requires 1000+ hours.. All the others are easier than easy..

LOGistiCAL, Zaccaria Pinball, ToME, Dofus. Those are just the ones over 1K achievements

I had not even heard of LOGistiCAL or Zacaria Pinball. Dofus is not available here, so I can't view that storepage (and my only knowledge of Dofus was that the company behind it decided to advertise their game by registering a lot of fake accounts on a forum I was frequenting back when it was new and spamming it with Dofus posts).

Where did they pull those numbers from o_O
That's like playing around 2 hours per day on average ever since their launch...

Well at least the achievements in this game seem to be working, I've played another game of theirs called Wakfu, where the Steam achievements still aren't working properly after all these years...

At least Zup! was a game that I enjoyed playing regardless of the achievements, that one was utter trash.

I'm guessing that people buy these games not just to tack on a number to their achievement list, but to get the ability to stack a showcase with lettered symbols to make up words. It's as much a profile decoration gig as it is stat padding.

I also own a Zup! game for this reason, but have yet to play it

The game is not bad but having at all times 5 steam achievements notifications killed part of the fun.

Well, you don't even need any sketchy tools or something for this game.
You just start the game, play, and press jump - the only real button required in the entire game.

I know about the Zup games and stuff, but at least they are somewhat decent games and you get achievements for actually completing levels, even if short and easy..

That's just over the top now...

Yeah there are some games where you can get tons of achievement within a few minutes of actually playtime. #monstercakes, Pain Train, and Machine Hunt for instance

Limit the number of achievements. Is there any game that needs more than 500 achievements?

Even their TF2 has 500+ ( :P ), and some legit games (T.O.M:E comes to my mind) but these all require a lot of investment to get. Whle it's hard to find a threshold, I think achivement count and 100% completion time together would be a way better measurement for this, because these new games are all very short, while awarding the thousand(s) of achivements.

Yeah sure, it would be up to Valve to decide the metric. It's just a suggestion instead of whining about it without offering some way it could be fixed. I agree absolutely that a limit based on number of hours of gameplay would be most fair, but they might not want to police that. I think anything giving more than 100 achievements per hour of gameplay (across the time taken to get to 100%) is exploiting the system. So TOME and others like it are more than safe.

Hehe, that's a good one. "wow this games just gave me 600 achievements when I opened it, but I'm not sure if it's abusing the system at all"

There are actually even RPG maker games like the Arcane Raise series that unlock all of their achievements at a specific point or after a specific time. Look it up, it's just dumb how it's implemented - and main purpose of those achievement icons seems to be to decorate your player profile.

The funny thing is, Braid looks like I used SAM, but really I had played the DRM free version and the Steam version picked up them all at once when I launched it. (Owned the DRM free version and played it just before buying a Steam bundle with it, ended up launching it on Steam to see if there was anything different.)

This must be a new high as far as no. of achievements go!

They should cap it at a round number like 256 and stop this nonsense.

No, they don't really affect anything major. If people wanna use SAM and look like tools, that's on them. They don't get anything for it.

They've got the marketing skills of a four-years old but this will still sell like free bread to people wanting to pimp their profile or inflate their astats points :/

Could we get a virus that will wipe shovelware from Earth please

Comment has been collapsed.

Such games use their achievements as selling points, just as others use trading cards. I can see some of these games being fine or having a purpose like the customization of a profile, but after 5 or 6 "Zup!"s, there really is very little they could bring to the table quality wise. This game having 4k though? Christ that's double the amount of achievements I've actually worked for so far on Steam. Talk about trashware...

exactly my thought ... do people care more about total number of achievements vs completion rate? 1/1 or 10k/10k achievements all equal 100%

Beautiful is, that only few are wasting their precious time on achievements. I think games with 4k achievements are even a healthy tendency to break this silly achievement hunting, so that people could direct their efforts to something else, hopefully better, learning from this occasion ;3

So they can display an achievement showcase on Steam with all of their thousands of "earned" trash achievements without putting the expected amount of effort into it.

Achievements are worthing nothing and cannot be redeemed anywhere or used to gain an advantage over another user or anything. That being said, If some people are feeling good by collecting them let them be, as meaningless as this may seem to you.

...This has nearly 4x the achievements of ToME and that game legitimately takes a long time/a lot of effort to play. Going by the reviews it seems you just... press the spacebar 4k+ times?

I suppose it doesn't currently hurt anything, but if devs keep that crap up to boost sales, leading to limits going into place, games like ToME will get slammed too.

Do you take every gaming term literally? Like when you unlock a new skill in a game you're disappointed it's not a skill but only a pushing a new button?

Achievements in gaming are actually kind of like what he said though (some exception obviously). Usually achievements are actual achievements, like finishing the game or doing something special in the game.

Achievements lost their meaning. I can understand if the game requires 1000+ hours to get all them, but 1.5h? Just imagine if you get all Diablo/Starcraft/WoW achievements in 1h, it makes no sense. Achievements sometimes are only thing that makes you want to replay the game.

I guess that the achievements should be a challenge, not just a number.

I'm proud of my 100% in Blockstorm. I've spended 600+ in 2 years (from april 6, 2015 to april 21, 2017) to get every and each one of the 131 achievements. That let me be the second South American and the first Hispanic speaker in reach the level 100 in-game.

i don't see what difference it makes if it's achievements enabled, disabled, or has an insane amount of achievements or not. but then again, i'd be fine with and wouldn't even miss the entire achievement system if it just got up and walked away.

This could have been one of my posts. It's a fun enough meta game to engage in at times but someone getting upset about easy game achievements devaluing other game achievements are probably a bit too invested :)

Agreed. It can be fun at times to go for achievements (I'm currently trying to get all in Transport Fever), but they don't really add enough to miss them.

MFW when a game has almost more achievement than my 9-years old steam account.

Seriously though, after zup and zup-like games, achievements are completely obsolete. What's the point of doing a bunch of hard stuff for a single one when I can get a bazillion from one game.

This is the case where I can go with either side. I understand there's that lost value when achievement is so easy to obtain - rendering the meaning of achievement meaningless.

But if an achievement can send the developers money, why not? Of course not involving shady developers. If that's the deal, then it's not different than Trading Cards or Badges.

I love achievements, but I'm sick of these stupid games (Zup, Oik, Zoop, Pain Train, etc). All they are going to get is to Valve to move their asses and limit the number of achievements or something like that.
