New: Shikaku!

A second puzzle type - no words, just logic: split the grid into rectangles and the code reveals itself. Grids 5x5 to 20x20, six difficulty levels. Read more and try it

Some of you have already cracked the screenshot versions I posted around - so here's the whole deal, the full tool behind them.

TL;DR: Hide a code in a word search → share it → solve it → ??? → profit.

▶ Try it here: https://cipher-grid.pages.dev

Cipher Grid turns any code into a word search puzzle. Enter a Steam key, a SteamGifts / SGTools giveaway link, or any other code, and it generates a puzzle with the secret hidden among the letters. Once all the words are found, the remaining letters spell out the hidden code - read directly or reconstructed using an order key, depending on the settings.

How it works

  1. Enter your code or giveaway link.
  2. Choose a difficulty, grid size, and word theme (or add your own words).
  3. Choose how the code is read - in order or scrambled (adds an order key the solver needs to decode it).
  4. Export as an image, share as an interactive link, or both.

Solvers find all the words, and the code reveals itself automatically on the interactive version - or manually using the numbered leftover letters and order key on the image version.

Features

  • Three difficulty levels - Easy (across + down), Medium (adds diagonal), Hard (adds reversed)
  • Flexible grid sizes - automatic or fixed, up to 15x15, scaled to the length of the code
  • Supports almost any code - Steam keys, SteamGifts / SGTools links, or any custom text
  • Word themes and custom words - built-in themes or your own words mixed in
  • Illustrated theme - emoji instead of words; hover an emoji in the generator to see what it means
  • Blacklist - click a word in the list to block it; it gets replaced right in the grid when possible. Saved in your browser, and you can unblock anytime
  • Multiple codes at once - hide several codes in one session, generate a separate puzzle for each (each with its own settings), then share all the links or save all the images in one go
  • Short puzzle links - every interactive puzzle gets a unique link with a 9-character ID, easy to share anywhere, with a preview image in chats and social media
  • Solution image - numbered leftover cells, order key, letter casing, and the final decoded result
  • Extra options - one-time hint button, no stray digits in filler
  • Solving - your progress is saved, so you can close the puzzle and continue later; solver and view counts on every puzzle
  • My puzzles - the puzzles you created and solved, tied to your browser (no account needed). Grab their links, end a giveaway, or edit a puzzle's title and caption after publishing. Steam sign-in maybe coming soon.
  • Two puzzle types - word search and Shikaku, pick one from the arrow next to New puzzle
  • Light and dark mode - works on desktop and phone
  • Privacy-first - hidden codes are encrypted and not visible in plain text, even to the host; the code only appears by actually solving the puzzle

Using it for giveaways

Hide your giveaway code or link, post the puzzle image or interactive link, and let people solve it to participate.

Get creative - it doesn't have to be a code. Hide a hint, a riddle answer, a secret word, whatever you like.

Tip: post the solution image once the giveaway ends so participants can verify the answer.

No code to hide? Use it as a plain word search generator - pick a theme, solve, and enjoy.

Try these puzzles

A few giveaways to try it out - in no particular order. Find the words, get the code, enter the GA. All level 1+, 5 days. Good luck! ENDED

Update:

  • In generator (emoji theme): hover over an icon shows its meaning.
  • Added a blacklist: click a word in the list to block it; blocking an emoji blocks only its current meaning. Saved locally, and you can remove blacklisted words anytime.
  • Blocked words get replaced in place when possible; works on multi-code puzzles too.
  • Various small fixes.

These are neat! Thanks for the puzzle generator and giveaways. I'll remember this for my next puzzle giveaways.

I found a bug on mobile (Android, Chrome). If you press the text below the grid, the words you already found stop being highlighted. They do still count as found and new words are highlighted.

On Pc Chrome same bug if you change scale (ctrl+ ctrl-)

Will try to figure out a better scale so people don't have to resize, also if they decide to resize, that it remembers things :D

Great to see new puzzle generator. (Does Syberia giveaway has some additional key solver, because it has 9 symbol long code)

There is a clue that explains what has a 9-symbol code. Just look around here or when you solve any puzzle :)

after playing through the crossword where the game I am interested, I think the only bug I encountered is when I resize the page, the highlighted words will dissapear and forcing me to restart the thing.

But still, the interaction is really good, and I am looking forward of it.

Spoilers for 3rd image: That one is redout 2, where I didn't join the giveaway as not really keen to that game XD

Were you on mobile or pc? I know that some things change when there is resizing, but I couldn't replicate it on mobile and had no reason to resize on PC :D... Will look into it :)

Comment has been collapsed.

I am in PC, using microsoft edge.
The reason I will resize on PC is when I am using laptop, and the crossword size is large such as 15 * 15, the letters are so small that I have to resize the crossword to see the letters clearly.

happened to me too, PC, firefox, but it was just visually removing the found clues in the grid (in the clues below the found ones stayed marked as found). i had only one word missing, and after i found it the puzzle was solved

neat, not really a fan of just sharing the image though... doing word searches in paint is a royal pain... especially when using a square for 2 words is allowed since putting a line through it will make it easy to miss... don't really want to burn paper printing them out either(it not just being black and white will prbly be a problem for that as well as I only have a black and white printer)

the interactive link is great though

Well, when I started making it, the first few tests were with an image... Since I needed way more time to figure out how to share it with people and how to make it work in the end :) So I want to keep an image format just for that, even though I like the interactive one more :D

thanks for this, its fun. just did them all, for the hard one it was really nice for it to not be too big and having the clues listed, as backwards spelling totally messes with my mind :D

and thanks for all the GA too ;)

no clue what the last code in syberia GA is supposed to be for, tried jigidi, nono, 2solve,...

China Telecom. I can visit it right now, but may fail a few hours later. Seems to be random.

If I can take a guess, it may have something to do with CT's DNS? You may manually change your DNS to a public one such as 114.114.114.114 etc then flush the DNS and refresh a few times to try?
