I don't want to make this overly political or negative. Most of Canada has always seen itself as a part of a larger world. We have spoken out and fought in defense of many nations. But times may be changing. Canada is part of the British Commonwealth headed by the King, Yet when the US speaks about annexing Canada, or taking it by force, Britain has no comment. I suspect that it is a result of what Vahid suggests. That many nations and even the US itself is focused on what's happening in their own backyards. We are part of the UN, NATO, G7, OECD, WTO, and other alliances, but do we actually have any friends to rely on? I guess that's why I posted this. Thank you for your comments.

With the political climate being what it is in the US, no sane country would want to alienate the world's best ranked military by giving us open support. I have some hopes that Europe, with the push of France and Germany's rearmament plan, would help us in the long term. But that means fostering alliances right now, advocating for us being the last line of defense against the US, not the first one, etc. Nothing of this is being done, probably because of the election cycle. Once it's over, hopefully we'll see more movement on the international relations front and, with time, some support.

I don't want to debate it. That's not why I created the thread and this isn't the place for it. I'll just say that in my view, the purpose of organizations such as NATO are exactly to create open alliances in advance to deter conflict rather than reacting to it once it's occurred. I disagree with more of your analysis but this isn't the place for it.

I agree that organizations such as NATO should serve as deterrents, and I think they do. Russia has complained about NATO for ages now, which means it's probably doing its job. But nothing in NATO's charter articles is there to explicitly prevent a member state from attacking another member state. Most experts seem to agree that in such a case Article 5 should prevail, but it's unclear enough that other members states could try and weasel out of it.
You edited your text after I replied to it, so my reply now seems a bit off. My original idea was the following: other nations are trying to safeguard themselves first and foremost and unless we start strengthening our bonds with the countries we want to call our allies, then when push comes to shove, they will abandon us. I still think that point stands.

Hi. Changed my comment? Um, no. I added the Gordie Howe reference almost immediately after. But I am also confused. Why do you continue your political analysis after I respond that I don't want to debate it and that this isn't the place for it? I appreciate your enthusiasm on an important topic, but I don't want this to be about politics and I don't want to have to close the thread because of it. I was more hoping that fellow Canadians had a place here to say 'hi' and show unity, or that others would show their support in a non-political manner. I'm sure that you can find many other places that would be better for you to argue the merits of your views. Thanks for understanding. I'm looking forward to all of getting to the other side of this.
